The Report

I want to get a report on how our turkey hunters are doing this year. Georgia birds haven't been easy, but a few of the Realtree boys have put one down. I've also heard many reports that Texas turkeys are tough to kill this year because there are NO 2 year olds. But then some hunters are reporting good luck in a few states.

So here's what I'd like to do: Post a comment on how many birds you've taken so far and what state you killed it in. Feel free to post multiple kills. Will do a nationwide comparison when the season is over. And I do realize that not all states have opened.

Thanks
David

I've killed two Eastern longbeards in southeastern Oklahoma.

The first was opening day April 6th and was a relatively easy bird, while the second took two days of scouting and eight days of hunting and finally fell April 22nd after my second stalk in the dark to his roost tree.

This tougher second bird would walk away from calling and decoys when I encountered him several times earlier, so yesterday I was silent, put out no dekes, and merely sneaked in very close and waited for him to fly down in range. He was a 3+ year old bird with big hooks, beard, and body weight, of course!

All in all I'd say our extremely wet and stormy spring has messed with the breeding cycle and resulted in a lot of difficult hunting days, especially because of high wind. But the birds are workable if you put in the time.

My season in MI here has been open for 4 days. I called 6 jakes and one tom with about a 6" beard, but you can only kill one bird a year and im waitin for one of the bigger ones I have seen. that said, the toms are hened up like crazy here, I had 2 really nice toms strutin in about 70 yards away, I heard a hen goin crazy and here she come into the field ran circles around the toms and ran the other way and away they followed. That has happened a few times now. I think it will get better within the next week.

Birds arent talkin at all in northeast michigan. this is my first year hunting turkey in this state and have not had any luck. Its also hard to find time to hunt between work and school. I just moved here from kansas and I am sure there are plenty of people who know what kind of hunting I left behind. It hurts! My heart aches for hunting in Kansas, but I did get my lifetime license before I left!!
