    David,

This is J-Dog (Jeremy Ewers) in Gainesville, GA - Unlike you I have kept all of my bows; at 35-years old and not quite so famous my list is I'm sure a lot smaller. In 1985 my dad moved the family to Connecticut for a job working with private jets. There were four things he loved in life, jets, hunting, fishing, and his kids. In 1985 he decided that at age 12 I was old enough to go deer hunting with him and he bought me a Proline, Cyclone Intermediate bow out of Hastings, MI; I do not even know if they are still around. That bow came from Hall's Arrow which at the time hosted the largest indoor range in all of New England, and is runmored to have had many an Olympic shooter come through. That year I took my archery test, required for a hunting license and with no sites well out-shot all of my much older competition. I loved archery from that moment on. Since then I have gone through early Bear models, and PSE's, and now have moved over to Hoyt...LOVE IT!!! However, this year after loosing my dad at age 54 I was gifted with a most prized early childhood memory. In the last visit with my father before he went into the hospital for the last time he passed along to me his older Golden Maple, Browning Deluxe Nomad Compound Bow. I have it in his old zip-up case and do not know if I would ever shoot it; sure would rather have him back for one more hunt or one more fishing trip.

    Hey David

It’s nice to see how people started off hunting. My first bow I shot was my dads Bear Whitetail Hunter. I was a teen and it was almost as tall as I was. It had the rollers on the riser to adjust the draw weight. Boy that seems like a long time ago. Speaking of first bows, I am trying to pick my daughters first bow. I am leaning towards a Genesis youth. But the draw weight is maxed at 20lbs. She is small and only 9 so that would be ok for now but, do you know of anything better she can use now and grow into. She wants to start now so she can hunt with it in a couple of years.

    Hey David,
That's a cool bow. Do you still shoot it?? My first bow was from Wal-Mart. It is more a practice, getting use to shooting a bow, but my first hunting bow is a Browning Micro Madas. I still have it because that is the bow I am using for hunting. I will be getting a new bow soon and I am going to buy it from T-Bone and it is going to be a Hoyt. Talk to ya later.

    God Bless & Good Huntin'

Ah yes - the first bow...even better than a first girlfriend! To be honest, I don't remember what type of bow my first bow was - it was some sort of a Bear, but not sure what kind. It was a compound, but with none of the gadgets we have today. The arrow rest was a thin piece of plastic that the arrow sat on, and I was always drawing the bow with my forefinger keeping the arrow from falling off the rest. Yes, that created some problems when I shot broadheads. I came in from practicing a couple times with a pretty nice slice in my finger! I never did take anything with that bow, but it was a start - I'm still looking for that first bow kill some 15 years later - but granted, I took up rifle hunting for about 8 or 9 of those years in between. The bow now serves as my cousin's bow she uses for bow fishing.

Thanks for stirring the memories, David!

David, first of all, I love your blog. Keep up the good work. Also, thank you for being an open Christian. As a Christian husband and father of 2 boys, I appreciate your stance for God and family.

My first bow, a PSE pulsar, around 1986 I think. I would have been about 12. That brings back some great memories

    HEY DAVID

MY VERY FIRST BOW WAS A XI. THE REASON I WENT WITH A XI IS BECAUSE AT THE TIME, THAT WAS THE ONLY HUNTING COMPOUND BOW I COULD FIND WITH A 35 LB DRAW WEIGHT. I WAS A VERY SKINNY (WEAK) KID. I HUNTED WITH THIS BOW ALL YEAR, AND ONLY SAW ONE DOE AND DIDN'T EVEN GET A SHOT ON HER. BUT, I DID GET TO KILL A SQUIRRL AT 30 YARDS CLIMBING A TREE. I WAS SO EXCITED I RAN HOME WITH MY PRIZE AND DIDN'T EVEN FINISH HUNTING THAT DAY. I HAD IT MOUNTED AND IT IS IN MY OFFICE NOW. IN SOME WAYS THAT SQUIRREL WAS JUST AS GOOD AS A POPE AND YOUNG BUCK AS A KID. ANYWAY, BY PRACTICING WITH THE 35 LB XI, I WAS ABLE TO INCREASE THE DRAW WEIGHT SLOWLY UNTIL THE NEXT YEAR I SHOT A 60 LB DRAW PSE. THAT WAS OVER 15 YEARS AGO. NOW I SHOOT A BOWTECH GUARDIAN @ 70 LBS. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE A POPE AND YOUNG BUCK AT THE MILK RIVER WITH YOUR FRIEND ERIC ALBUS. THANKS FOR THE BLOG, AND HAPPY HUNTING. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK DAVID!

My first bow... was a Bear Archery Pronghorn. It was 65#'s, with 65% let-off, huge axle to axle, deflexed riser, with good ole energy wheels and steel cables. I learned so much with that bow. The thing I remember most about it is you must have proper draw length! And yes it is not normal to whap your forearm on every single shot...Ouch! I think I had a nasty black and blue goose egg on my forearm that whole 1st season. Once I had a mentor set me up, and got rid of my arrows I bought at the corner gas station, I was good. I shot the fire out of that thing. I could not believe how acurate you could be with a bow. I was hooked from then on.

MY VERY FIRST BOW WAS A PEARSON 40# RECURVE THAT MY DAD BOUGHT AT A PAWN SHOP FOR $20. IT ALSO HAD THE FOAM SLIDE OVER QUIVER HOLDER AND A COUPLE OF CORK SCREW BROADHEADS ON WOODEN ARROWS. AHH, THOSE WERE THE DAYS.
    TRAVIS, OK.

my first bow I got when I was like 5. It was a little red one with the black rubber handle. Then I remember getting a darton youth bow. I remmember thinking wow a real bow! I can actually kill a deer with this, but I couldnt. My first real bow was A psc baby G-force, And that was the first bow I killed a deer with. I dont know where that bow went I sure wish I still had it.

    David,

My first bow was a Bear compound that was given to me by my dad when I was 11 years old. I passed it on to my nephew and he still hunts today (unfortunately not with that bow.)

Well David, my first bow was a Proline compound bow. My dad had always taken me hunting, but he was never interested in bow hunting. I asked for a compound bow for christmas when I was 13 and under my bed when I woke up was my first bow. Never actually killed a deer with it, but the days of spending time with my dad as we started this together is unforgettable! Now I'm 28 and the only thing I live for is bowhunting. I've already started sharing this important part of my life with my children!!! Thanks for sharing your memory with us!

My first bow was a little tiny red compound. I use to go out in the yard and shot arrows as high in the air as they could go.

It's cool seeing you with a recurve, as that is what I shoot now. My first legal bow was a recurve, and its all I have ever used. I am only 20, but I do have 10 years bowhunting experience with it, and recurves sure can get the job done.

ps- Im getting my first real compound next year, because when I go away to college, I wont have enough time to practice with my recurve.

Hey David. My first bow was a Golden Eagle. Dont know what model or anything, because the bow had been hand painted camoflauge and it covered any stickers showing what model it was. It is a compound bow with small fully round wheels on each axel. I bought it from a guy i had worked with one summer between junior and senior year of highschool. Im now 23 and have had five bows since then, but have sold all except that golden eagle. I now hunt with a Bear archery Truth. I think it is amazing how technology has advanced in just the last 5 years or so. Thank you for all the blogs and keep up the good work with all the videos. Jake, Illinois

    Hi David,
My first bow was a Hoyt Rebel XT that was given to me by my best friend on the occasion of my 30th birthday. That's right - 30. I'm living proof that it's never too late to start and at 43 can't imagine not being in the woods each fall and spring. Great site. Have a great year.

    Good Afternoon David,
My first bow was a bear (I think) bought for my 6th birthday in 1956. It had light green glass limbs and a heavy black plastic grip with a shooting window on each side. It pulled 20#s at 24 inches. There has not been a safe squirrel or rabbit since. From there it has been a long journey and a lot of bows. The only two I with I could get back are a Bear Grizzly and on original Jennings. I now shoot a PSE Firestorm Lite. Thanks for the opportunity to share and for the great programs.

    Hey David, Great blog.

My first bow was a Darton, not sure what the model was, but it was about 1987.

Then I went to, a Bear, then a Golden Eagle, stayed with a Golden Eagle for about 5 years, I think I owned two.

Then I went to a Darton Lighting, then I went to an Alpine Silverado, then a PSE Infinity SR-1000, then a PSE Mach 6.

After that I went to a Jennings buckmaster, then I went to a PSE, Fire Flight, then, I went to a Person Preator, then after That I went to a BowTech, then back to a PSE, now I switched over last year to a HOYT, and LOVE IT,, I'm shooting a HOYT TRYKON!!

So I've owened several, over the last 20 years!!

    Hi David,

Our names are Ashley and Kinsey. We currently work at Bass Pro in Columbia, Mo. I started working there about two months ago in August, and Ashley just started about a week ago. We both just met and started talking about our love for hunting. We both enjoy the outdoors, and working at Bass Pro has inspired us to get even MORE involved in hunting, more than we already do. With that, I decided that I wanted to learn how to bow hunt. I told my dad that’s all I wanted for my birthday was a bow. So I bet you can guess what I got for my birthday, my first bow! Now that I have practiced on my own time, as well as with my dad, I’m ready for my first bow kill! Ashley too loves to shoot her bow, and at her college she is on their archery team.

Not only have we started bow hunting, but we both came to find out we also share another strong desire in trying something else. We were interested in pursuing in making our own hunting videos to show our love for hunting as well as the outdoors. We were wondering if you or anybody else had any advice on maybe how to get them started. Together we want to show others the love and enjoyment one can have when hunting.

We are eighteen and nineteen and are willing to dedicate a lot of time to see what all we can do. I have grown up around hunting my whole life, due to my dad being a taxidermist as far back as I can remember. Ashley was first introduced to hunting a few years ago by her ex-boyfriend, and she too fell in love with it. Finding out we both wondered what it might be like to start our own videos, we decided we would start pursuing them together. We both know that this takes a lot of time and dedication, but we are willing to give it our best shot! We have planned to go back hunting to my home town in Palmyra, MO. where we hope to get our first bow kill on video! We would just really appreciate any help or advice we could receive. Thank you for your time!

    Your future TV huntresses,

    Kinsey and Ashley

    Hey David!
It's nice to revisit your past once and awhile, eh? My first bow was a little wooden recurve that a friend of my Dad's made. (I was 5 years old when I started) My first compound was an old Bear Whitetail, just like T-Bone's "Sadie". We called mine "the banjo" LOL! I gave up compounds in 1998, and now make my own wooden, or wood and bamboo longbows. There's no pleasure like the joy of shooting a weapon you made with your own two hands. Just wanted to say I enjoy your videos, and thanks for posting the old Fred Bear videos on RealTree also. Good luck and have a safe season!
