Archery Tournaments

Yesterday we conducted the archery tournaments for Monster Bulls 8 and Monster Bucks XVIII (can you believe we’re in our 18th year!!). I told someone yesterday I remember buying my first Monster Buck video when I was 7 years old! (saved my grass cutting money)  Haha!!

I’ll be sharing some of the highlights in the next couple of blogs but I wanted to thank everybody for your input and because of it we definitely wanted to hold the archery competitions again!

This year we had a new participant! Nick Mundt, ex-Realtree cameraman and Bone Collector was in town and we for sure wanted to extend the invite while he was here and as you can imagine he provided  more than his share of comic relief!!

First off, we held the “Iron Man” Challenge for Monster Bulls 8. Michael Waddell, T-Bone, Nick and I were the participants and the guys here set up the course with a new twist: We had to shoot the course of 4 targets (squirrel  in a tree@ 32yards, raccoon in a tree at 26, beaver on edge of lake @42 and hog in the bottom @ 51!) separately and had only 2 minutes & 30 seconds to do so. In other words, you couldn’t walk and finish in time so a “light jog” was required! (Hey, we had to do something to throw T-Bone a curve! Frankly, we were tired of him winning!!). T-Bone referred to it as “Aerobic Archery”!! And he was a great sport! AND, he beat the time deadline!

Then it was time for the 2nd Annual “Huntin’ Buddies” Pop-Up tournament (which yours truly and Realtree Outdoors’ Producer Daniel Thomas won last year). Jerry Broyles of Team Bowmasters was kind enough to drive over again and bring his system of pop-up targets. And we had an additional team with Nick being present.

Team RoadTrips: Michael Waddell and Phillip Culpepper

Team Realtree Farms: Roger Culpepper and Brennan Hix

Team Bone: T-Bone and Stephen McNelly

Team Bone Collector: Nick Mundt and Alan Linnenkohl (graphic designer, editor)

And finally, (defending champions, sorry, I couldn’t resist . . .  again)

Team Realtree Outdoors: David Blanton and Daniel Thomas.

Well let’s just say that things went a little different than last year!!!Stay tuned for the highlights next week!

Beards or Bust

It’s hard to say this with the cold weather we have been having, but spring is right around the corner. That being said, I’m trying to get as much work out of the guys in the video department as I can before the birds start gobbling, and they are out filming and hunting for the spring. We have been racking our brains to come up with something cool to do this year, and I wanted to get your thoughts on an idea we are working on. We are going to conduct a race for a Grand Slam. A Grand Slam, for those of you who are unfamiliar, is when a hunter harvests all four subspecies of wild turkey in the United States. Many people have done this and many people have done it in one season (our own Bill Jordan did it one year with a bow). This year we are going to try to pull it off in ten days driving.
Here are the ground rules: There will be two teams, one hunter and one cameraman. The competition will begin April 8th at midnight and end April 18th at midnight. Each team will be given a Chevrolet truck and must be back in ten days. The birds must be long beards, harvested under the game laws of each state, and ALL KILLS MUST BE CAUGHT ON VIDEO.
One of my concerns is the safety of each team as well as the safety of others on the road, so to keep everyone safe each driver must rest 8 hours for every 10 hours he drives. If neither team takes all four birds it goes to the team with the most birds. In the event of a tie we will go to the official NWTF scoring sheet to determine a winner. Each bird must qualify as an official subspecies under NWTF guidelines, no hybrids.
The teams consist of turkey hunting legend, Realtree and Hunters Specialties Pro Staff Member Eddie Salter paired with Realtree Road Trips producer Phillip Culpepper running camera, versus Turkey Guide and Animal Control Officer Jeff Shepard with Realtree Outdoors Producer Daniel Thomas behind the lens. It is going to be interesting to see how Jeff (your average Joe turkey hunter) will fair against (the Hunting Pro) Eddie. The cool part is that you can follow the progress of the teams each day right here on realtree.com. The guys are going to provide live video updates, and blogs to allow us to track their progress. I even plan on giving my analysis each day.
We are excited about this and cannot wait to see how it plays out. Check in over the next few weeks and months as the guys start the planning process and discuss strategy, and leave a comment to let me know what you think.

MONSTER BUCKS XVIII

Okay, amidst all the snow that is about to hit the Realtree offices here in Columbus, GA (actually the forecast is calling for 2-3”, enough to shut down schools and empty the bread aisle) our production team is really busy editing hunts for Monster Bucks XVIII.

This should be a really good year for the DVD. So I have a question for you! What about the “pop up” 3D archery tournament we conducted last year (by the way, Realtree Outdoors’ producer Daniel Thomas and I walked away victorious!)?

Did you enjoy it? Would you like to see something different this year? Basically, I want to hear from you as we plan the finishing touches on this year’s Monster Bucks DVD! I can’t believe I’m already working on the hunt schedule for this fall!
