ALTITUDE - The Backcountry

Consider a .280

By Team Realtree

Thinking of a new rifle for a western hunt? There is a near endless list of great magnum rifle loads produced with premium bullets these days. Many are designed specifically for long-range shooting at big animals—the type of thing one encounters when heading out west for elk. The tradeoff, of course, is these guns are heavy, and they kick.

Standard rifle calibers that have been around for years still work very well. One overlooked but useful option is the .280 Remington. You may not see this round on store shelves as often as the .270 Winchester or .30-06 Springfield because it’s never gained the popularity of either of those rounds, but it’s a solid performer without excessive magnum-like recoil. The .280’s advantages include generating more energy than the .270 while providing a flatter trajectory than a .30-06.

I truely belive that the real hunt of a lifetime is getting to realy know who you, "your true self" realy is.
A couple buddies and I are gonna be going on our first ever hunt out west this coming fall, and before I even paid my deposit my mind was made up that not only was I gonna take the time to real enjoy this awsome land of our's, but I want to try and get as much as possible out of the animals also.
I have three boy's and a girl on the way and if I do nothing more in my life than leave them a place to hunt, or just set and watch all of the wildlife that we have in the great U.S.A then so be it! Although when I do go on my first hunt out west, I will be trying very hard to take a nice Elk, and Bear, I also want to be able to take something home for my kids, and that is the ability to teach them the true respect of our great outdoors!!
To all of those who hunt or just do their little part in helping keep the outdoors clean, and alive for all of our kids, and their kids, I TERRY L. SLONE JR. I THANK YOU!!!
