QU Closes its Doors

By Team Realtree

Quail Unlimited, the conservation organization dedicated to bobwhite quail, furloughed its remaining 24 employees and put its Edgefield, S.C., headquarters up for sale last week, according to a story by Rob Pavey in the Augusta Chronicle. QU, like many conservation organizations, has been facing challenges from the economic downturn, but has also been met with internal difficulties.

“It is bleak,” said QU board member Bill Bowles. “On Oct. 27th we realized we couldn’t make payroll for the 31st. How do you ask someone to stay when you can’t pay them?”

Efforts are underway to rescue the organization. Bowles doesn’t believe a bankruptcy will be necessary. The headquarters, a warehouse and 75 acres are up for sale. “There is equity in the property,” Bowles said. “The sale could at least get the organization partly out of the hole. We don’t have to have 75 acres and a warehouse to run a conservation organization.”

I hunt on my 25 acres of land and have national forest all around me. I have killed more Big bucks on my 25 acreas than most people that spend thousands to go on a private hunt. How is that?? Wildlife management, Good food plots, ponds. I say if you can not afford to go to the big Buck country then Bring in the Big bucks to you!! It has taken several years to get the Big Bucks here but now I have my Trophies waiting on me not me waiting on them anymore. Hunting is not just going and shooting one! Thats easy!! Build up what you have, put in the time and hours on your place and it WILL yield some trophies!! Good Hunting!!

reguardless of salary, hunting is still hunting. It may be from your old family home place like mine in oklahoma with only 48 acres or my property in n.w. La. it doesn't take a 6 figure income to enjoy hunting. It doesn't mean you have to buy a package hunt either. Hunt what property is available to you. you would be surprised the big bucks my brothers and i have harvested over the years jist by being the country boys we are and respecting the landowners year around and not just during hunting season. If you want to go on a package hunt save up for a vacation and do so. My wife and I are going to Illinois this year instead of on a cruise or a long sightseeing trip across the U.S. We do what we love to do and take in what we can and it doesn't matter how much money we make or where we hunt, we do so as a family and with our friends. If we harvest a wallhanger than good if not well we still got to go and be in the outdoors and not behind a desk or on some oilfield location. Hunt where you can and enjoy what you have and don't take it for granted.

I hunt public and private land each year in three different states (Illinois,Ohio,Kentu cky)and other than the recent gas prices I really do not see why people think hunting is a rich mans sport. Hunting is what you make of it and if you want to do something bad enough you will find a way to do so.
