Realtree’s Bill Jordan got a chance this March 21 to experience what so many of his close friends do each week, drive a race car in front of an enthusiastic crowd at one of NASCAR’s most popular tracks. Jordan participated in the Scotts Saturday Night Special at Bristol Motor Speedway by taking part in the celebrity portion of the event.
Jordan’s role was to run in the heat race, which consisted of the first 15 laps of the event, against other celebrities to determine the position of his legendary NASCAR driver teammate. Jordan was paired up with two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Terry Labonte and accepted the responsibility of setting Labonte’s starting position gladly.
The drivers competed in late-model stock cars with the prize money up for grabs to the charity of choice of the winning team. Jordan finished his heat race second behind Philadelphia Eagles place-kicker David Akers earning his teammate Labonte a second-row starting position in the feature event. The NASCAR drivers competed in a 35-lap showdown finishing out the 50-lap charity race. NASCAR veteran Sterling Marlin went on to win the main event with Terry Labonte finishing fourth.
Jordan and Labonte's honorary pit crew was comprised of current NASCAR drivers, many of whom hunt with Jordan and appear on the Driven to Hunt television show on ESPN2. Pit crew members included Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Clint Bowyer, and Martin Truex, Jr. Car owner Richard Childress served as Jordan's spotter during the race.
"Racing at Bristol was a lot of fun," Jordan said, "and I really gained appreciation for what the NASCAR drivers experience out there. I can't imagine what it must be like at their level of competition and with 43 cars. It was plenty exciting just running by myself in practice. Then when we added just 11 other cars in the celebrity heat, let me tell you, it was tense. I'd like to offer a special thanks to my good friend and car owner Richard Childress, as well as his son-in-law Mike Dillon for all of his extra help, coaching, and working on the car."
