I live in Hartsville, a little town 5 miles from the Darlington racetrack and 10 miles from Florence. I saw a videotaped a nice gobbler in a field less than a mile from my house yesterday evening. He looks like a nice bird, I have an appointment set with him for April 1!

VtBowhunter

I was driving near where I live and on one side of the road was a strutter with about 8 other longbeards and across the road was another strutter and about 6 more ropers.

I can't wait for May 1st.

boy am I frustrated... went to pattern the new tc encore shotgun. I couldn't get it to center the target. no matter what i did to the sight it would not adjust to come down low enough. So, i got on cabelas and ordered a scope and mounts. Then i will be ready to go. My gun threw a pretty good pattern, just about 6-8 inches high. I would aim at the base of the neck and it would barely touch the top of the head.

Well, I have a very sore shoulder! I patterned my 835 yesterday and was happy with the performance of the new Wad-Control Federals. Have ya'll(the ones that use guns) tried them?

04-01-2005, 01:13 PM
Well, today was opening day. I went to the club and set up near where we had been hearing them roost. However, because of all the rain we have been getting, they moved a couple hundred yards. I heard one shock-gobble at daylight. It was very overcast and foggy, and they didn't gobble any more all morning. I ended up seeing 8 in a field across our boundary line, but some guys drove up in a truck and scared them off. then i came home and drove to a field right across the road. I got out the truck, hit the slate, and one gobbled 150 yards away. My bro is home for spring break, so I gave him the gun and set up 15 yards behind him. Every time i hit the slate, the gobbler rattled off, and he was coming fast. WE were in pretty thick woods and I finally saw him at 50 yards. He strutted in to 35 yards, but my brother couldn't see him from where he was. He strutted and gobbled a couple minutes, didn't see the hen, started putting, and then walked away. I didn't realize my brother couldn't see him, I didn't know why in the world he didn't shoot, it was only 20 yards from him! So anyway we are gonna go set up on him tomorrow, and I am taking a decoy and a gun this time!!!

kooter
04-01-2005, 01:49 PM
good luck, get us on the board

spyderpancake
04-02-2005, 09:08 AM
well, we went this morning, set up on the field, and he gobbled on the other side of a field that is separated from this one by 40 yards of woods. so we snuck thru, set the decoy out and my brother got on the edge of the field and I got a little ways behind him. He came strutting across the field but not gobbling at my calls. He slowly made his way to about 65 yards, strutted for a long time, then started walking our way again, when my brother shoots. He was too far away, but he got excited and shot. I am done guiding hunts! Next week I will be hunting for me! I will give this bird a week or so before I hunt him again, but I have another good spot for Monday morning. Are any of you hunting yet?

I'll be trying to fill my other 2 tags, but they won't count for the contest!!! It's your job now!! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I scored a double Monday morning! I shot a 18lb with 3/4" spurs and a 9"beard. Then after I had cleaned him I carried the guts to a field down the road and hit the call before I buried them, and heard a gobble. To make a long story short, I came back with another gobbler, the exact same size as the first! I will try to post some pics.

With one week left before the season opens, I took a walk up onto Birdseye and did some walking and calling. As I approached the flat before the hike to the top, I was answered by a gobble. I played with the call a bit and the gobbles kept coming and then they stopped. I sat there quietly looking at different spots to hang a stand for bowseason and aother gobble come pounding through the woods. This one was a lot closer so I decided it was time to get out of dodge before the bird got too close and got spooked.

I now have several spots to set up and a multitude of birds to play with over the next month and I have the 2nd week of May off to try to fill my tags.

I'm workin' on it......the birds are not gobbling and it's becoming more and more difficult to get anywhere near a bird if they don't gobble......I don't know what's up this year, but I still have until the end of May and I won't give up.

VtBowhunter

Mine's done now and I only got 2 gobbles all season, and I hunted them hard this year. Everything was delayed down here so we were actually hunting them a month too early from what I saw. The day after the season ended I drove up early in the morning, got out of the truck, walked out into the fields, and heard a flock of them thundering their darned fool heads off.

Day late and a dollar short. Sorry guys, I tried my darndest and gave 'em heck.
