The organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA, is the latest special interest group to annoy me. They are arguably the most visible and outspoken of the dirty hippy activist in America today. PETA uses scare tactics to pressure people into their way of thinking and in some cases their tactics have been criminal. Since the year 2000 there have been over 80 arrests for activists that break various laws during the course of their protest. Charges included felony obstruction of government property, criminal mischief, assaulting a cabinet official, felony vandalism, performing obscene acts in public, destruction of federal property, and burglary. PETA at times employ strategies that border on terrorist activity and in their minds the end justifies the means. They preach to anyone that can be forced to listen about animal cruelty and how animals should be left to their own devices. PETA claims that they operate under the principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. Personally, I disagree with most of what they stand for but primarily I distaste the hypocrisy in their actions.
First of all I love to eat meat. Beef, pork, chicken, seafood, you name it and I probably like it. If you don’t think that Mother Nature intended for us to eat other animals then why does it happen in all other aspects of the food chain? We as a species are inherently omnivorous, and true to our hunter-gatherer ancestry we eat what is available at the time. I do not have a problem with a vegetarian diet in fact I believe that vegetables are an essential food source for us. My problem is the belief that it’s one way or the other. We seem to forget the idea of balance in our lives in favor of fads and extremes on either end of the spectrum. We are subjected, almost daily, to fad diets that are perpetuated by groups or individuals with their own agendas. It is important to understand that too much of anything is usually bad and the best way to combat the adverse effects of to much is simply balance and self control. Personally I am pretty discriminating when I purchase my food. For example, when I buy meat I always buy from a butcher because it will be the freshest available and a good butcher lets you inspect before you buy. Meat that has been injected with growth hormones or over processed or fed a diet filled with chemicals and/or remains of other animals is a bad idea. At the very least it gives the food a certain watered down and, as is the case with pork, a dehydrated texture. Who knows what the long term adverse effects of the chemicals will be to us. The important thing to consider is that meat is a great source of vitamins and minerals and should be an option available to us all.
PETA claims that animal cruelty is further perpetuated by the people that wear clothing made from processed animal byproducts like wool or leather or fur. Again, I believe that their stance on this issue is a bit obtuse. Our ancestry has been using animals to make everything that they need for as long as humans have been able to kill them. The American Indians, for instance, used every aspect of the Buffalo they hunted for a specific and practical purpose. Clothing, tools, food, shelter, weapons, and medicines were all made from the animals that they hunted. Not that much has changed in that respect. It just makes sense that if we are going to eat an animal we should use as much of it for other things as we possibly can. Problems arise when we kill an animal for one thing and one thing only. I do agree that an animal should not be killed for the sole purpose of taking its hide, horns, or head just for the purpose of decoration. I also, believe that endangered species should be protected but again that is a personal choice and not one that I have a right to dictate you anyone.
This cartel would also have us, the human population, dying in droves if they had their way because there would be no animal testing allowed period. Now, I can’t speak for anyone else but I kind of like not having polio, small pox, the measles, or any or the numerous diseases cured as a result of animal testing. Not to mention the advancement in techniques, antiseptics, anesthesia, chemotherapy, and man many other medical breakthroughs that are now understood as a result of animal testing. Should we give an experimental drug to a person only to learn to late that it had deadly side effects? PETA president, Ingrid Newkirk, stated "Even if animal research resulted in a cure for AIDS, we'd be against it.” This bunch of freaks uses their money, which is tax exempt by the way, to slow down or stop contributions other charities like the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association. So PETA seems to want to help animals at the expense of human life. Well at least our lives. PETA VP Mary Beth Sweetland has diabetes and as a result has to take daily injections of insulin to stay alive. Insulin was developed and tested on animals and it contains animal byproducts. How does she justify this? Mary Beth says: “I need my life to fight for the rights of animals.” I guess since I don’t fight for animal rights I don’t need or deserve mine.
The last point that PETA makes in its mission statement is that animals should not be used for entertainment. Now I suppose that out of all of their craziness this is probably the one thing that comes the closest to making sense. There’s one problem though. What is the standard for “entertainment” and who defines it? For me, I tend to agree that these “world’s largest pig” side shows we see at the state fair are a little excessive. There are better things to do with a big fat pig right? I mean come on that’s great BBQ waiting to happen right there. I have a cat and a dog. If PETA had their way I would have no pets at all. My two pets would probably have been euthanised by PETA at their Norfolk headquarters where they killed 80% of the animals they “rescued” over the past 6 years. PETA’s response is simply “We do not run a standard animal shelter.” They believe that all animals should be left alone and free to roam wherever they want. Great plan there genius lets take a bunch of predators and prey and let them run free so we can watch nature work its magic. See now I thought we weren’t supposed to use animals for entertainment?
PETA is a coven of hypocrisy. They dare preach to us using scare tactics on young children and then turn around and use Benihana restaurant, a steak house, to cater their annual September fundraiser dinner. Regardless of whether or not meat is served at the dinner it seems that according to PETA ideology they should be protesting them not patronizing their establishment. They fight for animal rights and then kill 80% of the animals they save. The other 20% are given away as pets!! No animal testing? To **** with human life? Then Mary Beth Sweetwater should stand up for her cause and stop taking her insulin or PETA should stand against her if their principles are so important to them. As for clothing, I’ve seen pictures of these hippies and trust me all of you will want them clothed. It only makes sense, if we can fabricate other useful items from animals then we should that is what they are here for. It is their place in the natural order.
