Heres a little example of how easy it is for the system to get involved and screw up someones life majorly.
My wifes sister took in thier Grandma.Shes 85 yrs old, is in the mid stages of alzhiemers, and has a nervous disorder where she sits and picks at her skin.And honestly shes a very nasty old women, none of the rest of her family would take her in and look after her and my sister in law has my deepest respect for doing it.
Im not sure how to put this exactly.A few months ago she started picking at a spot on her butt.She said it itched all the time.They took her to the doctor and he put her on medication to stop the itching.She continued to pick at it untill it became a open sore.They decided she wasnt really itching and it was just a nervous habit.But the picking at it continued to the point she had to go in weekly and see a wound specialiost to have it treated.As soon as shed get hme however she would immediately pull the bandages off and continue picking it untill it bled, and then rubbing something outta the medicine chest on it, usually vasoline or vicks.By this point its become a huge sore, shes seeing several doctors and not listening to any of them, and shes almost constantly bleeding from it.
She went down to Des Moines last weekend to see her relatives and got sick.She had to be hospitalized.They decided the sore on her butt had become infected.One of the admitting nurses however decided it wasnt a sore but a large burn.She had 4 other nurses come and look at it and they all agreed http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
So after misdiagnosing her to begin with as soon as they got her admitted they called the DHS to investigate this "abuse" my sister in laws inflicting on her grandma.Despite finding out the truth later that day my sister in laws still under investigation for something that never happened.The social worker at the hospital said they cant call off the investigation once its started, despite the fact that it was 4 idiot nurses taking a wild guesse about an injury that started the whole thing.
So now my sister in laws got DHS on her back, interviewing people and its a matter of public record.On top of that shes starting the RN nursing program this fall after she takes her LPN test.If this is still an open case or they decide shes guilty of something, which shes not, she cant get her LPN licenses to go on to her RN program.Their also placing Grandma into an assisted living place, but since shes capable of taking care of herself medicare wont cover it and its gotta come out of the families pockets.Whats wrong with this picture?All they have to do is look at Grandmas medical records from up here and its painfully obvious shes been treated for this for months, why is it once DHS becomes involved they cant let something go without disrupting everyones lifes involved, even when its been such an obvious mistake.I have just about decided that this whole countries gone crazy http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
