This is Bucknrut checking in... fresh back from the NY Smackdown2 where I shot about 4 trees out of 36 targets, had to borrow arrows, and completed the contest using arrows with no field tips!

I shoot "fingers" and the course was setup for "release shooters" with targets out to 40 yds. My equipment is only good out to 25yds. Don't worry, I always get "a few" deer every year.

Congratulations to Rossman on your mulie! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Way to go Rossman!! I know yall don't want to hear about misses.....But......I had a nice 8 pointer in my sights but just grazed him low. No blood on the arrow and just spotty short trail!! Ughh. Can't complain though, it's a long season and I'm going out tonight. Hope to get a bruiser on the board for us.

Rossman are you sure those brows aren't an inch? gotta make sure we3 don't cheat ourselves haha. My bow season is off to a slow start, passed a few small bucks, trying to get a doe or a big buck, and i can't get a shot on a doe!

Yeah, they are definatually an inch. I measured them from the base to the tip before we sent it to the taxidermist.

Oh, I only counted the points on the beam, I forgot to include the brow tines. Good catch. I will change my entry. Thanks for noticing!!!

The points were measured and they were definatually above 1 inch. Actually, they measured 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 inches. From the base to tip. I even subtracted the extra velvet on top of the hard horn.

Oh, O.K. Now I remember. Especialy with mule deer. Most don't even count the brow tines because they typically don't really have any. Just little nubs.

When do you want to vote on a team name? The ".... mushroom ...." name, is probably a no go due to youths. So let's be moraly resposible and pick a better one.

I am sure Bill Jordan could kick something into this contest!!!!!

BuckNrut
10-20-2005, 10:21 AM
Prizes or not, it's fun just being associated with a group. It helps keep me motivated.

Anyway, last weekend was interesting. Had a group of does and fawns pass within bow range about 15 minutes before sunrise. Then a group of 7 deer enterd the cut bean field an hour or so after sunrise. Too bad they were at the "wrong" end of the field. But, I did notice a pattern. The place they enter the field is good for a SE wind, which is what we have forcasted this weekend.

But I guess I can keep my updates too!!!!

It is fun just being associated with this contest mand our team. But prizes would be cool too!!!

Well my weekend for hunting got shot right in the butt. Rained from Friday morning all the way through last night. I didnt even get to go out at all. well, i got mine. nice big 4x4 with a 24.5 inch spread. I'll post some pics a little bit later, i was looking through them and i'm having problems finding 1 picture that shows all the scoreable tines, except for the ones that are just the antlers only. i'll try to get a few of them up on the net and let you all see. also need to get a close-up of my license, since in the ones i was trying to show the entire deer and the points, you can't see any information on the license. should have pics up later today

i also wanted to note, that I had 2 inch cheaters http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What's wrong with hunting in the rain? The deer are still out. I went saturday morming in the rain and saw lots of movement. Don't let the rain keep you indoors. Many big bucks have been killed in the rain.

BuckNrut

I did some "rain hunting" this weekend. Had two doe right under my stand 30 minutes before sunrise. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Saw a total of 14 Saturday morning and nothing on Sunday (PM). My buddy saw only 3 doe last night, but his son (too young to hung in NY) saw 14. He made good mental notes of where the deer entered the field. It's a place we know well. It's a small staging area on the edge of a ridge/field. Later this week we will be hanging a stand there.

Hunting in the rain cause my arrow rest to come unglued so I didn't hunt Sunday morning. I put on a new rest, adjusted the nocks on both sets of strings, and resighted my pins. All set for next week when the chasing phase should begin. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I dont like to archery hunt in the rain, especially heavy rain. Blood trails dont last to long in that kind of weather, and to me personally its not worth hitting a deer and then losing the blood trail because of rain and never finding it. Not worth it at all.

Your right, "In the heavy rain". But in a light rain, a blood trail won't wash away as quick as people think, especially in heavy wooded or "swamp canopy" areas. Too many trees and leaves to let the rain make a direct hit onto the blood.

I always make sure the shot is going to be a quick kill, so the deer won't run far before expiring. But, anything can happen. I basically cut my shooting range in half. This gives me less room for error. But, this is just what I do. Others may feel more comfortable or less comfortable with their shots.

You knbow the saying, "to each his own".

I still see lot's of deer in the rain!!!

Nice buck, congrats! I Tagged my first deer last evening with the old muzzleloader. I wanted to use my antlerless tag and i did...just not on the deer i thought lol. I was stalking withing range of a group of does and fawns, there was a lone doe just over a bit of a ridge. I stalked in, peeked over teh ridge and there was the deer about 60 yards out. I cocked the gun, held the sights just behind the shoulder and fired. Two things went wrong, one i shot too far back, but luckily a .54 caliber slug makes short work of a liver, and secondly, the deer had moved and i shot a fawn. lol Oh well, some good eating meat, and now it is time to go for the big buck.

hey, that happens to the best of us. Happened tome last year. But with Darwin's "natural selection" theory, the fawns should be the ones shot. They are the weakest and less likely to survive the winter, coyotes and the occassional wolf. Well, you'll have a little less but better meat for the freezer. And, let's not forget, five more points for Team 4!!!!

I think Xen still needs to post his buck on the entry thread with his license. Other than that I haven't heard of anyone else getting anything. I've only seen the one buck on opening day. Haven't seen much or been out much other than that. I will try some more this weekend.

ML opens on Saturday!!!

So are we going with the Mighty Muley's or the Mighty Mulies?? I think the first one looks more like the correct spelling, but I'm just a Virginia boy. Let's ask Rossman and Xen. ????

Xen

well the first week of rifle hunting was fun. I had numerous close encounters, passed a big 6 point on teh ground at 25 yards with my rifle, passed on does and fawns. I rattled and had a huge 11 point come charging in so fast i couldn't get a shot off, and shot a small 8 point for one of the guys we hunt with. (note party hunting is legal, he had to leave the next day and had no meat) Not sure how that will work if i need to enter it if i don't get the big buck i am after. Since he put his tag on it i don't know if it will be allowed or not. Oh well, i plan to shoot a bruiser before dec 15th anyway. That buck was 40 yards, and one shot from the 7mm dropped him in about 30 yards. The big 11 had within 30 yards, but he came running in and saw me and took off in thick stuff before i could get a shot. the reason i know he was an 11...one of the guys sitting about 300 yards away shot him the next day lol. Nice deer, probably mid 150's. This week i am job hunting mainly, but next week is our second deer camp and i have a few big bucks spotted. So, i now have two deer down, and still have a buck and a doe tag.

Heading out (1 1/2 hours) tonight to a mountain in VA. I'll be bow hunting all day Friday and some of Sat. for black bear primarily. Big bucks will go down too http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifand I will probably take a doe if it presents an easy shot with nothing following. I hope to bring back some good news and hopefully pictures to scan and put up here. Good luck to everyone else this weekend. Let's put some more points on the board team whatever!!!

Is anyone else going to kill any deer? Or are we just going to hear how everyone sees all these deer and either does not get a shot or passes them up? Let's make something happen!!!!

Let's go team, we need to kil some deer here!!!!

Well I got some points coming for team 4!! I shot a 17" 8 point last night. One of his brows is half busted so I might only be able to score him as a 7 point in this contest. I'll try to get pics up by the end of the weekend.

congrats buckbuster. I have been hunting my but off and seen a lot of deer! Passed on about 15 different bucks, and seen 4 that i would love to get. Missed a long running shot at a 130 class 10 point(thought it was bigger at first). I probably shouldn't have even shot at it due to the speed and range, but i missed clean...by about 5 feet lol. Had two big bucks go by just after legal light, not sure of the exact size, but big mature deer. And the kicker...had a 9 point(mainframe 8, 3 inch kicker on right G2) that would score about 155 at 7 yards. This deer was maybe 20 inches wide, tall, long tines, and gobs and gobs of mass. The wind was 40 miles an hour and you couldn't hear antything but trees braking. I had a wall of thick trees at my back hunting on the ground and suddenly a massive head and rack pop out 7 yards to my left. We had a stare down, but he finally went back in the trees without a chance to raise my gun. If it hadn't been so windy i would have heard him and had a 7 yard shot! Oh well thats hunting i guess. The weather is really bad for hunting now so hopefully it improves. The last 3 days have basically been one big blizzard. Lots of snow, lots of wind, and currently -22 out.

Fisherguy, that bad weather is a blessing - those deer will really be moving after the storm.

BTW, this weekend is the opener for the "regular" season in NY's southern zone. My ML is sighted in and ready to bark!

About a month ago the 1/2 acre rye plot the landowner planted was about 4" tall. Last week it was about 2" tall - deer are just mowing it down! The deer's normal travel pattern takes them right through the plot, and passes 10 - 40 yds from my stand. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I expect to be posting some points for team 4 next Monday.

buckNrut, cold weather makes them move, the stuff we have had makes them hunker down in the thickest trees tehy can find. Even the bucks are hardly moving and it's peak rut. yesterday was -29 with winds gusting to 55 miles an hour. The snow is done falling at least. It looks like i may have been too picky looking for my monster buck...seems i have a job offer north of here that i am probably going to take. So we have a month of season left, but if i take that job my hunt is over, there aren't even deer up that far.

Wow fisherguy! Good luck with the job and hopefully you will still get a good opportunity to fill your freezer and put some points up. I think BeckNrut was refering to when the bad weather stops those deer will be starving and moving like crazy. You all hunt in some crazy weather. I hiked 2000 feet down a mountain Saturday and didn't get anything. Took us awhile to hike back up. We were sweating pretty bad even though it was below freezing. Maybe Thanksgiving week will give me something extra to be thankful for.

Well, all the vitals are cut, packaged, and frozen. One of the easiest processing jobs I've had in awhile. Very little wasted meat from the shot (small chunck of stew meat) and NO spoilage! Total yield was about 90 Lbs of meat.

I'll post my entry tonight.

What's happening everyone? We are having a lull here. We have two bucks down but no entries for points. Hope Buckbuster and Lil_Blonde remember to submit their scores.

I am getting buck crazy. Hope I still get a chance at one. Otherwise I'm gonna peg a doe soon. Trying to get out on Friday.

Peg a doe now. Every one likes to hold off on the does because they would rather kill a buck. It is good to kill does along with the bucks to keep the ratio balanced.

So, I say if you see a doe kill it and submit it!!!

Sounds like a plan. Some of the places I hunt, the ratios are way off. The rut is winding down now. I just don't like shooting one during the rut since you never know when a buck will follow. I don't mind shooting does early in the season and late in the season. Our season goes until Jan. 7 so I will have no problems getting a doe for the team.

Still hoping for some headgear. Go Team 4!!!

Well, we made it back from Kansas without getting hurt or arrested. The hunting proved to be tough. I shot a ten point. It is not what you would consider a "Kansas Brute", but he is a good deer. I shot him towards the end of the trip. We tried to hold out for a slammer, but it just was not happening. I hated to go all of the way to Kansas to kill this caliber of deer but, I was not coming home empty handed. The people who run the hunts told us to take anything we wanted, as long as we were happy.

He has a good spread and decent bases. But he is lacking in the length of his tines and girth.

Here he is:

My buddy passed up a couple decent 8 points. He came home empty handed, but he was happy. He knew he could have killed a deer if he wanted to.

I would submit this buck but my muley scores better!!!!

nice buck rossman, was that another bow hunt, or rifle? congrats either way

rossman

it was a rifle hunt. The outfitter called me three weeks prior to the hunt and told me she had other hunters cancel. I offerred her 50% of the price for two hunts, and she accepted it. So me and my bud hopped in the car and got out there. I got back to work this morning expecting to get fired, but it looks like I'm too valuable, ha ha ha!!!

I prefer to hunt with a bow, but it's nice to take the .300 weatherby for a little payback time!!!! Know what I mean?
