Hey everyone. From Saskatchewan, Canada. Season starts here Oct. 1 with my smokepole, ends first Saturday in Dec. I am really excited, looking to take a doe and a buck (hopefully)...what have you guys put in the freezer in the past years? I like looking at pics. Are you hunting out of a stand, on foot, in a blind?
I have been deer hunting since 96 and cannot get enough. Problem is I officiate football, so time is kind of limited. Been lucky a couple times though, hopefully it continues. Good luck to everyone. Any ideas on a name?
Congrats billkay!!!

Thanks guys. I just needed some meat in the freezer. Our Urban Zone began on Sept 15. Regular is Oct 1. I have the advantage of taking an 2nd urban zone buck here in Ind and will be hunting the Early M/L season in Ky in a couple of weeks. As for a name. The turkey team I was on took the name Team Renzos. In exchange for that, Renzos sent us some dekes, hats and promo stuff. If you all want to do the same I can arrange it. Just let me know. It's your decision.

Ok Bill, I'm game for some Renzo gear. In fact, I have a Renzo buck that I use from time to time. I shot a doe over it with my bow last year. I was actually looking at buying a Renzo doe for this year. My Renzo buck is in the back of my truck as I type this, ready for the opener tomorrow.
Team Renzo ... the Deer Version.
I guess to answer the question, "have we shot deer before", um well, yea, one or two http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Actually, too many to count. Typically 2 or 3 a year.
Here is one of last years.

I've been hunting since the 27th of September already. Theres a good buck in the area that I'm hunting thats working scraoes hard and busting off branches above them...I hope to put him on the board for this contest.
So far I've Passed on 2 small does, countless grey squirrels, chipmunks, and tonight I had a porcupine get the living bejesus scared out of it when it turned and looked over to the left and realized there was my feeding doe decoy less than a foot away...almost fell out of the tree laughing http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I only got to hunt until 9 AM on Saturday, but it turned out pretty promising. Got out of the truck and deer were blowing, one scared the crap out of me because I walked through this big field without my light on and when I got to the corner I turned the light on. Anyway, there was a deer I bet not 15 yards and it took off tearing down the woods. I just about filled my pants. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Right after I got in my stand a deer came to the base of my tree, but it was too dark. About 30 minutes later a small doe and two yearlings came answering "the Can". I had all of them (at one time or another) 15 - 30 yards, but it wasn't what I was looking for. I'm going back out next Sat, but only for about half a day - my "in-laws" are coming to visit. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Bill, you're the man. Totally, not necessary, but very much appriciated.
Well the opener was HOT, at least the temps were. Not a lot of activity.
I did pass up a very nice 120's 8 pointer at 25 yards Sunday morning. Text book shot opportunity and I never even clipped the release on the string. I'd gotten pictures of him on my trail camera earlier in velvet. He needs to grow another year. I've got a couple at home just like him and want something bigger. Also passed up a little dork buck at about 10 yards.
That was the bulk of the excitement from my weekend of hunting. It was just awesome to be back in the woods.

Had a nice morning in the stand. Heard a buck rubbing on a tree pretty close to me, but it is real thick near the swamp on my farm and wasnt able to see him. gonna give that stand a little rest and head up on top of the ridge during the evenings this week. wont get to hunt this saturday because it is penn states first night game in 3 years and it is a huge game against ohio state. Im hoping we go 6-0 for the first time in forever! so im gonna have to wait til next sat to get out in the morning again.

Would have been nice...
BUT
I was blessed to see a Pine Martin about an hour before dark tonight while in the stand...that was really cool watching it climb trees and move through them looking for food.
Anywhoooo.....at last light was having trouble keeping my sight light on so I decided to pack it up for the day. Hung the bow and put the seat up...reached down and grabbed the bow rope and started pulling it through my gloved hands. It was making a slight hissing sound and then...KA-THUNK...KA-THUNK
I looked up in time to see WhiteTail leaving from ...oh maybe about 8-9 yards in front of my stand http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I never heard it, never saw it before then, and wish I had put my Game Ear back in after the leaves had stopped rustling like they did all afternoon http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
That deer had walked right under my stand while staying in some cover from the limbs and leaves and never made a sound http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
Oh Well...Thats hunting!!!
At least I know my scent control regimen worked http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I took my daughter out with me last night. She's 6 and likes to go sit in the blind. I had it figured out last night. Wind was perfect, I just knew in my gut where the deer would be bedded and would move to. Half way to driving there, I said "oh no, I forgot my decoy (Renzo of course)" There was no time to go back and get it. So we hunted anyway. Sure enough with an hour to go, here come three does right to us. At about 60 yards, the lead doe got all nervous. She just did not like something about the set up. This is where I wish I'd had my decoy. She needed something to take her attention off of the blind. She freaked out and took the other does with her into the woods. Not sure what wigged her out. The wind was perfect and the blind fit well into the surroundings. Man I wish I'd remembered by decoy! That would have sealed the deal.
My daughter was a little bummed. But I explained that that is hunting and she ought to be happy, that is the closest she and I had come to tagging a deer together. All of our past outings the closest we'd gotten to the deer were a couple hundred yards.
Good evening, but man if I'd only remembered my Renzo.

I've gone and sent out the addies to Renzos for the guys I had. You should see them arrive late this week. Not sure what we'll be getting. My guess is a deke or two each, maybe a DVD, and some decals. I do not have addies for 10acboy, markyj, or dec67. I may get out to bow hunt a day or two this week, but I head to Kentucky for the early muzzle loader season this Fri. Season there is Sat and Sun only. Hope to score a nice one there. Good luck to you all and lets win this thing!

Awesome job. I have been hunting every weekend but the acorns are not dropping yet, so im not seeing many deer. I have been seeing alittle button buck just about everytime time out. I have drawn on him several times thinking it was a doe but one last check of his head shows little nubs. Those little nubs have saved his life about 4 diffrent times http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. I will be in Pike county Illinois in alittle over three weeks, im hopeing that we catch the rut as good as we did last year.

alright boys, i got one saturday mourning, nice doe, i also shot one monday mourning, but the arrow bumped a twig in my shooting lane and the shot was back, i watched her run into the corn and fall so i that i got her, i wasnt for sure so i gave her some time, then i got on the trail always marking last blood, well to sum it up fast my last bloood looked real good, but then it just disappeared from that last blood almost like she vanished..lol...i combed the whole corn field looking and never found another drop of blood..im completly baffeled by thyis considering the last blood looked promising, the farmer picked the corn that after noon, so if she was bedded in the corn the he either could of ran her over or pushed her out....i hate no finding my deer, but what can you do? how did everyone else weekend go?

10-17-2005, 09:08 AM
Abosolutely NO deer activity here this weekend, which is extremely unusual. The wind was howling all weekend, so it made for nasty hunting. Never saw a turkey either. Not suprising. If I were a turkey, I would not want to venture out of deep cover into 20+ MPH winds. There were not enough stakes in the world to keep my D.B. blind staked down. Misserable.

I'm sure I got your addie 10acre. I think there were 8 packages that went out. No luck in KY this weekend. Was covered up in does all weekend and could have fed half of Ethiopia with the meat from them but only 2 small bucks were seen. Got to see 2 toms last nite as well. It was great hunting in the mountains but I wish I had something to add to the team score.

I receiver mine in he mail yesterday as well. A mucho big thanks to Renzo, Bill, and Steve. I hunted this weekend and with cooler temps and more acorns on the ground the deer where moving. The only bad thing was that the only deer to come into range where ether small bucks and fawns. It was an awsome weekend in the woods. I had a button fawn within 20 yards for over 45 min. At one point it had its nose on the rope that i pull my bow up with. I almost always carry my video camara with me and this weekend i forgot it, just my luck.

Anyways....He told me about how to cut off the antlers on the buck and turn it into a bedded doe...add one of the antlers to a feeding doe and place it behind the bedded doe....trying that trick out this afternoon!!! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I had a small buck respond to some rattling in Kentucky last weekend but it has yet to have any effect on the deer in Indiana. he one I I whacked in the shoulder came running in at nearly full speed responding to a grunt call though. Go figure. He may be a bit more hesitant in the future I'd say...LOL Good luck guys. Be safe and get ya a good one!

I went out yesterday evening and set out my new Renzo buck and doe. I had a scrubby little 5 pointer come right to them and hung out with the decoys for more than 15 minutes. He worked a scrape not 10 yards from the decoys and then milled around eating the winter wheat within a few feet of the decoys. They never spooked him or anything. He thought he was hanging out with his old friends. Pretty cool to watch.
I'm betting the deer really get moving in the next week, with it cooling down and the pre-rut being just around the corner. I'm thinking the Renzo decoys are going to be the ticket.

Well....I'll be hunting a new area with my Renzo's Decoys soon....Mine is getting Logged right now http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Good things happen out of bad though...Talked to one of the Loggers and got invited to hunt his private farm http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
He's taken a 143 5/8 9 pointer from his property so far this year....and in his words "Its not the one I'm after but I had my son hunting with me and he took a doe...we were dressing it out and this buck came in on her trail".
....actually feel a little bad about the grumbling I was doing while pulling the stand http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Took this picture this morning after pulling my stand.

sounds good everyone, welp, sat. evening, dint see anything, sun. evening was rockin, i knew the rain all day would be pushing the deer in the fields looking for some food. welp got in my stand at about 2:30, set up the ol stealth cam, and set up a scent dripper over my mock scrape then climbed in the tree, not long after it started pouring down rain again and i looked down and this small buck http://www.realtree.com/img/551/Small_buck1.jpg
was following a doe into the corn field, that was real good sign, the doe got within about 25 yards from me, and this buck got about 30 yards, i thought about shooting him, but decided to pass, played around with him with the primos medium can, bbut he wasnt too interested, he already had a girlfriend and he was faithful... http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif after that i waited around another hour in the stand I decided to make a stalk on the deer, so i got down out of my stand and walked about 20 yards and anbother doe came out of the timber, she had her eye on something the whole time, but i couldnt turn around to see what it was, after she spooked i got in the creek line and looked over and that same buck was walking right to me, he walked only about 5 yards away from my stand, thank god i wasnt in it, i would of been temted..lol...welp that was about my weekend...how bout anyone else?

I duck and turkey hunted all weekend. Shot a few woodies and the mallards would not cooperate. Did get my dog's first water retreives in, so it was a good weekend. She and I were sitting in the blind Sunday morning and had a good 125" or so 8 pointer walk past us at 10 yards. Good looking deer, hope he makes it till next year.
Turkey hunting came so close to panning out. I shot, the long beard stepped, and all I have to show for it is a handfull of tail feathers. Oh well, I'll track him down in the spring.
Time to start taking the deer hunting seriously. I'll probably go out Thursday evening and then hit it hard this weekend.

Well IF I even get to go I am going to have to be out of the stand probably around 10:30. Saturday is suppose to be lows in the lower 30's, highs in the low 50's. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I wish that I could stay in the stand, but one kid has a soccer get together and the other one has a birthday party. I know that a lot can happen in a few hours. We'll see how it goes. I am going to try out my decoys and use "the can". Good luck everybody!

I'll be out there, just hunting the normal routine. Sunday there are some commitments with the kids, so it will be hit an miss.
I don't usually stay out past 10:00 or so in the mornings and go back out again around 3:00. I have too much going on usually and need to get some things done in that couple hour window.
I went out last night, but had a doe that just would not cooperate. I'm going to slip out tonight as well.
Going to set up those Renzos tonight.

I hunted this evening and saw an absolute STUD of a deer. I jumped him, just as I was walking past my stand to set out my Renzo doe. I was down wind, so he never winded me and I really don't think he ever saw me, just heard me. I got a pretty good look at A LOT of antler as he bounded off. So, I went ahead and put out the decoy and hunted the stand because I really did not think he knew what I was.
So, I hunted for two hours and did not see a thing. I think he had run off all the other deer because for me not to see deer from that stand is almost unheard of. Right at the last few minutes of legal shooting time, I see three does come out and cut across the field about 60 yards out in front of me. I let them go and started to pack up. About 5 minutes after the does went by, I saw a large deer following their path with it's nose to the ground. I pulled up the binos and it was A LOT of antler. I'm 100% sure it was the same deer. Because of the fading light, I'm not totally sure how big he is, but I'm guessing he's 140's or maybe more. It was hard to tell. So fortunately, my bumping him was not too damaging. He's using the area, so I know right were I'll be sitting Saturday morning.

I will be hunting all weekend long. Im starting to see a few more deer but just not the right ones yet. Rifle season started last weekend but i very rarely hunt with a gun, 95% of the time I hunt with my bow. Im leaving next thursday for a week of hunting Illinois. Im hoping that the Big bucks are acting stupid and chasing hard. I was up there last year and they were running all over the place. I went with a group of 16 and we killed 16 deer, 9 bucks with 8 that would go pope and young. After that I will be back to Georgia and hunt a few more days and then its back to work for alittle over a week and then im off for 2 more weeks. The rut where I hunt in Georgia usual gets kicking after thanksgiving, so I will be on vacation here when it starts. I saw a Monster(140-150 class)last year 2 times with in 30 yards but things didnt work out. The first time I was at full draw and he was at 25 yards and needed to take 1 more step to clear a tree, but some reason like big bucks do he turned 90 degrees anr over the top of the ridge. The next time I was hunting with my muzzleloader and I had just shot a decent 8 pointer, he ran about 30 yards and fell over and I hear something over my shoulder and there he stands 30 yards wide open and broadside and me with a unloaded muzzleloader. I was wishing I had bow. Good luck to all yall this weekend.

I don't know if I am going to be able to hunt this weekend or not. I would love to get out for a couple of hours tomorrow morning because you never know what could happen.
I called Steve this morning to thank him for the "care package" and all I can say is What a great guy. He gave me a big thank you for giving him a call and he wished me all the luck in the world. We discussed several different ways of using the decoys. What a down to earth guy! We was telling of a conversation that he had with Jim Shockey and moose hunting, it was awesome. If we have luck with the decoys he said that he wants pictures guys, make sure the decoy is in the picture.
He told me a Michigan hunter called telling him that a 182" buck came right into the decoy! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif They also killed 12 antelope in 2 days using their decoys. I would love to get out and try to use them.
Good luck this weekend everyone!

Hunted a new spot both Sat and Sun afternoon. It's about 5 acres of woods surrounded by standing corn. I have a couple of tral cam pix of some super deer in the 130's but only saw a few does this wekend. It does hold a lot of promise once the corn comes out this week. Go ahead and post that button up if you haven't already scored a doe. 5 points is 5 points Kyle.

I could not hunt Sunday due to family related commitents. But I hunted hard on Saturday. I set up the Renzos and used some new James Valley scents that a buddy of mine sells.
I never saw a deer until the last minute or so. Then here comes this 120's 8 pointer that I've passed up a couple times. He caught one wiff of the scent and saw the decoys and came in like he was on a string. I passed him up at 10 yards.
He was all over the decoys. He never attacked the buck, but he circled them and circled them trying to figure out what was going on. He loved that scent too. Good stuff there.
I'm not sure how many more times I can resist the urge to shoot this deer. I'd really like for him to go find a thicket and lay down until January so he and I can play next year. It gets harder to pass him up each time.

Buck Hunting here in this area for me(since I dont have a doe tag)....but that tag would have been really nice this evening!!!!!
I had a doe come into the setup in the picture below this evening....I took the picture just after she left...from the spot on the ground where I was sitting!!! She was only half of the distance between me and the decoy on the left http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I swear....The next time the camera is going to be ready!!!!
She milled around, for 4-5 minutes, like she was looking for what the other deer were eating and then just walked back the way she came.
There are actually 3 decoys out there...one of the feeding does is just to the left of the decoy on the right behind the trees.
There is alot this picture does not show about the ground near the decoy on the left...most of it is open but obscured by the old stone fence I was near.

welp, heres a recap on my 4 day weekend..... got in the tree thursday afternoon, rattled and did the can a little bit...nothing much happened, then i looked and 3 does were coming into the corn field pretty hard, i thought for sure they were being pushed by something...they came right by my stand at about 35, and 40 yards.....bread and butter shots...lol...well then friday mourning did go, friday after noon driving home saw a booner in a corn field at about 3 o clock. he was about 15 miles from were i hunt. got in the tree didnt see much of anything...saturday mourning woke up and didnt feel like getting up, but something kept telling me, GET UP..... GET UP, this is a great mourning, so i did..got ready to go, and had to wait for my dad, and he made me a little late getting into the timber, i pulled into my hunting area with my lights off and it was just starting to get that semi light stage of the mourning, i saw 3 does standing in my lain so i decided not to drive any farther and just park there and walk the rest..i then got ready and started walking with my tinks 69 bottle open blowing towards the bedding area and my stand, i dindt think much of it till i got distracted looking at a couple does about 400 yards away, and then my dad was like kyle....kyle stop...stop! and i was like what, so i started to look back at him and before i could get turned around my attention was drawn to a very nice buck coming right to me, i crouched down and tried desperatly to get my release on my string but failed many times because i couldnt stop looking at his rack walking right to me...at this point this nice buck is about 15 feet away from me and STILL walking...i finally get my release on my string and then he finalyl sees me at about 10 feet away....i got to slowly draw back and he takes off...i immediantly ''batt'' at him and he stops at 41 yards....i ranged him and then drew back on him and he ran for good.....didnt see much of anythign the rest of the weekend

I spoke with Bailey this morning. He took an 8 point in Iowa and was heading home for a few days before heading back to Illinois. He wanted me to tell you guys that he'd love to see some video of us hunting with the dekes on film, especially if there's a kill involved. If anyone is taping, let me know and I'll give you more info. There may be a video conest on the horizon involving Renzos dekes too. I hunted both Sat and Sunday. Wind was blowing at about 20 mph each day. Saw nothing on Saturday but saw an awesome buck, (10 point) scent checking a doe about 300 yards away. With the wind, there was no way to get his attention. The farmer tels me he'll have the corn down this week and shotgun/ml season opens Sat. Sounds as though it should be perfect!

Man the deer are moving like crazy here, even with the high temperatures.
I passed up a 2 1/2 year old non-typical on Sunday night and again last night, and two different 120 class 8 pointers on Sunday evening. All of them fell in LOVE with the Renzo feeder doe with a little James Valley Full Draw scent. Crazy. Man do the decoys do a great job of getting a deer's attention.
I just wish a shooter would walk out. I've passed up a ton of 120 and lower deer this year. I can't find something that I want to shoot. There is a lot of corn still on around here and with the warm temperatures we've had, I think the big guys are moving at night only. I had an awesome 10 pointer run out in front of my truck a few nights ago about a mile from where I hunt, it was well after dark.
Gun season opens here this coming weekend. I'm sure that will get the deer really running. I'm not a big gun hunter, but I'll take the muzzleloader out at least. We'll see what happens.

hey everyone
i passed up a bunch of small bucks already. the action is really heating up here in pa. this is the last week of bow season though. so im hoping i see a shooter by thursday or else i might take one of the smaller bucks i keep seeing.
The decoys really work well and even from an almost head on angle they look very lifelike. if i had a video camera id try to get some footage. had a 6 pointer and a 4 pointer come over and check them out last week. the decoys work best in the fields. IMO.

well boys, heres how my afternoon went tonight november 9th. got to my hunting area and carried my renzo buck onto a ridge line and sat by a tree for awhile (i took my stand out of this timber) wasnt impressed on what i could see so i climbed up into 2 overhanging trees that were supported by one big tree, got up there and the wind picked up, and i fell out....the only thing i broke was 1 axis arrow, not even a hunting arrow a ''coyote, coon, bird'' arrow...lol...so i in anger i picked up my decoy and walked to the other ridge were it got flat and i could see better, set up the renzo buck and scent and started rattlinjg and grunting..about 20 minutes later 5 does came running hard on the ridge were i was sitting being chased by 3 bucks...i immediantly started rattling and saw another buck coming down the valley and up the side of the ridge i was one....gave him about five minutes , and started rattling again and sturring up leaves with my feet, about two seconds later a small buck came running right to me at about 15 yards, gave him a grunt so he would look at my renzo buck but instead he looked at me, i could have shot him, but thought i would pass on a tall 4 point..he turned around and walked down the ridge after the group of bucks chasing the doe's...how about everyone else, any luck?

Here is the Picture of the doe that I shot. It had rained the night before and the wind was blowing about 20mph. I saw this little doe walking down the ridge across the hollar from me. She got down in the bottom where I could not see her, I never seen her exit the into the crp field where the other deer had been leaving. When I got down from my stand I nocked an arrow and went to slipping into the bottom. I finally get so that I can see the whole bottom and there she stands at 20 yards. She walks by at 15 yards and I send and a Muzzy tiped Axis arrow threw both lungs. She runs about 40 yards and piles up.

Here is a couple pictures of a Good 8 pointer that I let walk. He is not a Huge Midwest Monster but he would have looked good on my wall. I have been kicking myself since monday wishing that I had shot him. I have about 4 min. of video of him as he walks past my stand. He walks by at 21 yards and stops broadsided. I just thought that he was alittle to small to be shooting but after looking at the video i know that I should have came to full draw and let an arrow fly.

Shot this doe this morning. Does were getting run everywhere by bucks. I had the feeder about 30 yards from my stand. When she came through the ditch with her tongue hanging out she saw the deke and seemed to instantly relax. With the feeder there, I think she thought she was in a safe spot. Guess not..... Awesome morning. Passed on an 8. It was actually a 3x5 with a broken brow tine. May have been about 120". He bedded not 10 feet from my stand for about 5 minutes and then moved about 40 yards away to a ditch and bedded again. Today was opening day for m/l here. I may take a shot at him tomorrow if he shows again. When he bedded the first time he was only 25 yards or so from the deke in the field. I don't think he saw it though.

Congrats guys!
I shot a doe Saturday night with the muzzleloader. I fell out of the tree stand and thankfully I'm OK. See my post in the deer hunting section for the full story.
I'm still waiting for the big one to walk out. I'm sitting out the rest of gun season here. I'll be on a family vacation over Thanksgiving. I'll get back out in our muzzleloader and late bow seasons. I typically don't hunt much of shotgun season anyway.

welp boys, nasty weather here in IL...windy, real windy!...lol...sunday was about 30 mile an hour wind steady all day...made a good day for stalking though, my buddy and i stalked up on a doe that was feeding in the corn field and she just kept walking to us, we werent quit sure who was going to shoot her, but she stopped at 30 yards and saw us, and we both drew back and she saw us, she ran and we didnt care to much because we were really after a big rutting buck, here's the game plan for tommorow, my buddy and i plan to go out to a timber we dont hunt very often and hang two stands there and hunt there until thursday. then friday morning i will be in the stand with a 12 gauge for the first day of shotgun season...good luck to everyone on team renzos!

good to here from ya dan......well boys tonight was a awesome night, my buddy and i gopt into our ground blind we built yesturday and waited in the unbareabke cold until about 4 45. then i looked and said travis dont move there is a doe about 5 feet away from you...i dont know who but she snuck up on us and when i looked she was about 5 feet away from us...and still coming to us, the ground blind we built is pretty sweet, they have no idea that we are there, well i couldnt get my bow and she came around to our back side and only about 5 feet away still, and she saw us and snorted and ran, i quickly gave a baaaah! and she stopped at 30 yards and i told my buddy do smoke her, he drew back on her and fired this whole time i was like thats a dead deer, all the sudden his arrowgrazes a tree and goes flying every which was, we then looked at her and were amazed to see about 15 white tails go up and about 5 of them had racks! i was so mad... that was about our evening, we got some more brush and gathered it up and made out blind a little better so if the deer does manage to get to our backside, we are still covered good...tonight was my last night with my bow until monday, our shotgun season opens up friday, we think buy getting out of there until monday all the deer that are spooked from this weekend will filter into this ground as a refuge and come monday it will be open season on them...wish me luck...good luck to everyone on team renzos

Good luck to all the Renzo boys. I'm flying out at 7:00 am in the morning. Not a hunting trip unfortunately. I'm heading off with the wife and kids to Disney World and Siesta Key for the holiday week. My job kind of dictates when I can take vacation and the middle of gun season was all I could get this year.
Oh well, I usually don't hunt a lot of gun season anyway. I'll let my farms sit and all the gun hunters can push the deer into my ground. When I get back muzzleloader and late bow will soon open up and maybe I can find me a late season big boy.
Good luck all. I'll be thinking of you while my toes are in the sand and I've got a cold one in my hand.

Well boys our m/l season is over. I could have killed a ton of bucks. I only had two does within range during the season. I could have taken a black bear on Friday, but I didn't really need a black bear so I didn't take a shot.
Here is my 9. He is my largest buck to date. I saw him late in the morning riding this ridge and I grunted to him, but he didn't want any part of it. I then used the can and he turned on the dime. He came in directly behind be (quartering away when I finally saw him). I didn't like the shot, but I took it anyway. He went about 80 yards and I had to put another shot in him to put him down for good. He was a big deer - the pics don't do him justice. We estimate his weight at 180 - 185.
http://www.realtree.com/img/2/medium/DSCF0012.JPG
I brought my oldest boy (10 yrs) out to the farm. They can kill a doe anytime during the year. He's shooting a 30-30 and only feels comfortable out to 50 yards with open sights. We saw five does and he was looking down the barrel at one that was probably close to 100 yards, but I wouldn't let him take the shot. The doe just would not turn broadside and it was getting dark. You should have heard him, all nervous, teeth chattering, he had doe fever boys and I will never forget it. He's hooked now, so I think that I have a hunting partner now. He can't stop talking about it. It was priceless. He told me now he understands why I hunt all the time. He asked me if the sun always sets and gives off those purple and orange colors. I told him that the only way he'll know is to hunt with me more often, and sit back and enjoy those sunsets.

well boys, i couldnt make a good shot on my deer this weekend...it was 1st season shotgun season and there were two does abvout 45 yards away, i shot at them and missed, then shot again, still missed, then they ran off into the timber, and then i heard my dad shoot, he said they walked by him at about 3 feet! he was on the ground, he said he didnt know whether to shoot the deer that close or bash it with his gun...lol...he just let them walk by in fright because of my shooting at them, and then he shot one....i then went around the area walking with my gun and my dad got on the radio and told me to be careful because this HUGE buck was only about 30 yards away from me, i couldnt see him at all though....the buck eventuly worked his way around and went south, if i just would of stepped out of this little bend in the timber i would of had a shot at him....o well.....also i lost 84 acres of timber to hunt because turns out the latyer that supposeley owed it ''ruth jackson'' and told me i could hunt it is crazy and she is the wrong ''ruth jackson'' so now i cant hunt this ground anymore... the real ruth lives in chicago and has some local guys farm the ground...they are idiots and they control who hunts there, nobody hunts the ground anymore and it just stis there....what a weekend

I started hunting wed. evening and hunted thru sunday morning. Thanksgiving morning I saw 4 diffrent bucks but they were all little. I saw deer everytime that I went to the woods. Friday evening I took my 7 year old cousin with me. We have a box stand that sits on a hardwood ridge with a small food plot about 60 yards away. After about an hour a little doe walks into the food plot and I let Zach take the shot. He is shooting the same gun that I killed my first deer with many years ago, its an old ruger 44 carbine. Well im trying to Video, watch the deer, and coach Zach all the while shakeing more than anytime im holding the gun. Zach finds the deer in the scope and filps the safety off and boom. Well he drew blood but it was not from the deer but the scope caught him and cut him open over the eye and along the side of the nose. I was able to wack a doe saturday morning at about 21 yards, it went about 20 yards and piled up. No more points for our team but some more meat for the freezer. Im leaving early tuesday morning for Illinois. Im still have a archery tag and im going to see if I can poke a hole in one before second gun season starts. I will be back the middle of next week hopfully with some pictures and beable to trade in my doe for a buck. Good luck to all of yall and I will tell yall all about it next week.

well good lcuk to ya cornbread.....im a little disappointed right now..i have been hunting this one timber HARD there are a lot of good bucks in there, but i havent been seeing much, well the other day my buddy came in while i was hunting to hang a stand, were does he put it, about 20 yards in front of my stand were all the deer come from! i was so mad, but he wouldnt listen to me, so i was like well fine im out of here, so i took my stand down and moved it about 200 yards to the other ridge, were there are a few small rubs and a scrape....i got in the stand tonight and was completly bummed on were i was sitting, i know it not a very good spot, but in the other spot there isnt much of a point to sit there because my buddy will shoot anything before it gets the chance to come by me....so tinight after sitting for about an hour i left a little upset....i dont know what im going to do but hopefully something gives soon...good luck to you guys

Man did we ever have a great time!!!
He took that 8 Point Buck(211 lbs dressed out) on Monday and made a great shot, he waited for what he said was 7-8 minutes until the buck turned broadside, and the shot was close to the 250 yard range!
I was down in the woods tracking my first doe that I had shot at 7:15AM, after a parade of deer that had gone by me earlier, when I heard him shoot.
I had a setup of 3 feeding doe decoys out in front of me and grunted as the group that my doe was in came out of the woods, they saw the decoys and started walking towards them, I took a shot as the big doe(173 lbs dressed out)
At first I did not think it was him because there was only one shot...LOL...that was at 8:30 AM.
I had set out 2 feeding doe decoys in front of him at about 75 yds with the white plastic handles from grocery bags tied on for tails that where moving in the breeze.
He said the buck came out saw the decoys and started walking towards them and him(very slowly) while looking to each side, feeding, and doing more looking with almost each step.
Meanwhile I had found my doe and field dressed her and returned to the top of the hill to retrieve my game cart and give him the keys to the truck so that when he was done hunting he could just drive around and pick me up at the bottom of the hill...it is a big hill...There was no way I was dragging that doe uphill even with the game cart!!!
I was at the game cart and heard noises on the top of the hill and saw deer movement shortly afterwards 2 deer one doe and a small 6 pointer came off the hill running around the base in my direction...until I raised my hands and loudly said "HEY DEER" to which they promptly made a direction change http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
So I start heading around towards where my dad is to find him being helped out by another hunter pulling the game cart. I could not see the deer yet so I moved closer after he said he finally got a good one... I could not be happier for him!!!
High Winds and Weird Weather changes kept deer movement down to a minimum but while doing small pushes towards each other after 9-10 in the morning we did see alot of deer but passed on shots on small bucks.
We would sit in stand sites during the early morning and then do small pushes afterwards to get the deer up. I found deer beds that where completely dry during rain and snow while pushing towards my Dad through the brush so the method works...it got them moving anyways.
I got my second doe(156 lbs dressed out) on Friday and was lucky enough to capture the hunt on video http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I had just made a move to a more open spot to get better video and 10 minutes later the deer showed up!
We used the Renzo's Decoys on all of our hunts and found that when the deer saw them they calmed down, sometimes even from running, and even turned and started walking towards them!
Dad said: "Bring them Decoy things again next year"...LOL...wonder why

Great job guys. The season isn't over yet. I'm having a good season. I have been seeing tons of bucks and I saw a brute Saturday, but I didn't feel comfortable with the shot. I did take a doe, but I got a nasty cut right between the eyes from my scope http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif, but it was worth it. My dad was visiting for thanksgiving and wanted to go out with me a couple of times which surprised me because we never. I hunted together in the past. I had saved a doe stamp and sure enough the first night here came a doe working the edge of a cut corn field and he flattened her! It was great bringing my dad out and he got a deer. He hasn't hunted in like 30 years! It was a great hunt! I don't get to hunt for the next couple of weeks http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif but I'll be out there the 22 - 24 of December.

Congrats guys.
I made it back from the Florida vacation on Saturday evening. Had a great time. The kids thought Disney was awesome. The beach was great too. I thought I would miss hunting, but I needed a break. I hit it hard the first 6 weeks of bow. I was burnt out and I think some of my farm was burnt out a bit.
I went out in the rain on Sunday evening for a couple hours. I actually took my shot gun with me. That is the first time I've taken a shot gun into the deer woods in probably 8 or 9 years. It felt kind of weird. Saw some does. Could have shot a fat old doe, but I just did not feel like messing with a deer unless it had some big antlers.
I've heard reports of a big 12 pointer running around the area that made it through gun season. I'm hoping I might be able to tango with him this weekend when late bow and muzzleloader open up. We'll see.
Congrats to all of you guys that scored while I was gone!

Don't be sorry tim, you did the right thing. We not hunting because of the contest, we are hunting because we enjoy it so much! This weekend was pretty rough, Friday had high winds and Saturday we did drive after drive and it's hard for me to shoot a running deer. The first drive that I did, I pushed 20 - 30 out (there was 3 or 4 good bucks in the group) ran right up the fence row to were I usually stand. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Anyway I shot at a doe, didn't hit it, but at least I shot. Anyway this weekend I plan on bringing my 10 year old out in the evening, maybe he can lower the hammer on a doe. That would make this season the greatest: Shot my biggest deer, bought my dad hunting for the first time and he shot a doe, and hopefully my boy can put one down. I'll keep ya posted.

Tim, the amount of bone you'll scoop off the ground this winter will make up for it. I know how hard pressed you are for time with the little spiker and the little doe fawn at home. My little spiker and button buck will likely keep me home even more next year. Hope you enjoyed your time in the outdoors, I'm sure you did.

Tim, don't sweat it, we don't hunt because of a contest. Trust me, I could have scored many times over this year on some decent bucks. Just now what I've wanted. Still have a couple weeks of hunting, but I'm doubting very much I'll be adding a buck to our score. I just haven't (and probably won't) crossed pathes this year with one I've wanted to shoot.

well guys...hey its all but a blast...this was my first contest and im just glad i got paired up with a good bunch of guys...my biggest worry on getting on a deer was the i wouldnt get a deer.. that didnt see to be a problem this year, i was blessed with a lot of oppratunities on deer..just havent had the chance at anything big this year...but hey just being out there enjoying nature has been great...its not over yet though...hopefully i can score on a nice buck before the season comes to a close...but tim dont be hard on yourself...i saw your pictures of deer you have taken in the past and all of the were nothing short of amazing..same goes for the rest of you guys..all great deer.good luck to everyone thats still hunting

Kyle, I felt alot like you said...I just wanted to contribute to the team. I took a couple nice mature does and waited for the bucks we knew where there to show up.
I passed on smaller bucks though and could have taken any one of them but theres a really good reason why I did not.
I have been passing on smaller bucks for quite awhile now while hunting that area that my father and I have hunted since 1998 together.
The farm where we hunted this year is seeing less and less hunters each year. We both have been continually taking our share of does from this place. This year we saw more bucks than ever before and my father was able to take the biggest buck of his lifetime.
We found out this year that the landowner is no longer going to be giving out any more permits to anyone new and now just to the people who have been going there for years in a row.
Its just going to keep getting better and better as time goes on and we have the proverbial key to the gate http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I already have next years permit http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
The contest has been fun to be a part of.
I'm looking towards the future and what it has to bring hunting with Friends and Family...for me thats what its all about after all is said and done!

my sentiment is pretty much the same. I wish i could take a nice buck and help the team out, but it just hasn't come together for me this year. i was able to take a nice mature doe(which i still need to enter once i get the pics from my brothers digital camera). The bucks are on my properties, its just been a tough year. i've passed many small bucks and even a decent 8 early in archery season. I believe in management too much to lower my standards. I still have some hunting left to do so you never know what will happen. you gotta be out there to shoot them, so i wont give up til I got something hanging upside down. good luck to all and dont give up yet. my hunting buddy took the biggest deer of his life and one of the biggest in the area on the last day of archery with 15 mins left of legal shooting light last year. So heads up everyone, this is just for fun and you never know whats going to happen

"Thanks to all yall for letting me be part of an awesome team"
Now if we only knew who you were? LOL Our mystery hunter? Just kidding. The whole reason for these contests is to build comradary between forum members and generate communcation between hunters with different backgrounds. We surely have suceeded at that! This certainly is, not was, my favorite team! I still have about 3 weks to go. We are currently in out m/l season. It will run till about the 18th of this month. I spent about 15 days in the stand of the last 3 weeks on 3 different properties and have not seen a worthy buck. Yetserday I walked every row of a 100 acre standing corn field looking for something bedded, no luck. No big deal, I'll keep at it till the end. I'm glad you were all willing, if not excited in using the Renzo dekes and I hope that they will eventually pay dividends for you. I'm proud to have all of you on my team nd wish we could kep the team together for next year... Thanks to those who are finished, and best of luck to those stil at it. You never know when Mr. Big will be there.

My feelings exactly! I still have until the first Saturday in January to score on something bigger, but I don't know how much time I'll get to hunt plus I need to thin the doe herd some. But, what a group of guys! I couldn't have been placed on a better team. Thanks for the dekes too, I know that we are all thankful to you for getting them.

The team has been fun to be on thats for sure!!!
As far as the decoys go...I had bought one Doe decoy before this contest at a local Gander Mountain store. This was my first year ever using a decoy while hunting. I would have been happy if all the decoy did was take the attention of the deer off of me for a couple seconds so I could get a good shot. Not only did that happen but I had deer seeing the decoys and walking in to them!!!
I say "Them" because I was using the one I had bought and the ones we recieved as being part of "Team Renzo's".
Here I was my first year using a deer decoy of any kind and I'm not using one big bulky thing that made using it a pain in the butt. I'm carrying 3 decoys into the field under my arm folded up!!!
By the time I went to West Virginia hunting with my father I had bought a few more and setup 2 in front of his ground blind(75 yards away). He takes the biggest buck of his lifetime after the buck notices the decoys(the buck was 175 yards away from the decoys) and starts walking towards them....BTW...It was his first time ever using a deer decoy hunting as well.
He said: "Bring them Decoy things again next year"
...and for me...I wont hunt without them again!!!
P.S. The first few times using the decoys you have to be very careful and place them so that they are either directly facing you or facing away from you.
I know...I almost shot mine a few times http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Well it does not add to the score, but I doubled today on a couple does. The Renzo's pulled them right in and the smoke pole barked (twice).

Nic pic and congrats on the deer. I myself didn't have any luck yet with the decoys, but I am going to keep trying to use them. I didn't see any deer this weekend, I am still trying to get my oldest son a shot at one. I did however, bag my first black bear! I saw it feeding out in a corn field. I had my sons with me (they are 10 and 5). They got in the truck while I stalked the bear which took a total of about 15 minutes. With light running out quickly the bear finally gave me a shot at about 120 yards and my 270WSM dropped it in it's tracks. Man you talk about being pumped! Do we get bonus points? It was a small bear, but a bear. It dressed out at about 100 - 110 pounds. I was told it was probably a 2 year old. I'll post pics in a day or two.

hey congrats on the bear! thats awesomne, yeah i think we should get some bonus points for that! i cant wait to see some pics! welp i havent been able to go out lately, but hopefully this weekend i can get something, i need to shoot another deer, its been awhile...lol..i think nov 12th was my last kill with my bow..but hey cant kill anything sitting inside, its just been to darn cold here in IL...temps in the single digits and below zero...not many deer are ganna move in that conditio...its starting to warm back up a little bit so maybe i will get out sometime late in the week or this weekend! good luck everyone

The deer will probably move more, and earlier when the temps drop. They have to eat more to keep warm and will use the sunshine as an extra benefit. Take advantage of the cold while you can.

hey guys...i went out saturday evening, and didnt even see a deer...its so cold right now here....as i was walking back to my truck i saw something big run up a tree...i thought it might be a squirrel, but then i saw that it was a coon, a big coon! in bordom, i knocked an arrow, the coon was about 30 feet in the tree and his vitals sticking out completly, so i let her fly, smack right through the vitals and passed through and my arrow can sailing slowly down about 10 feet away from me...the coon didnt even make a noise and just very very slowly started walking down out of the tree, after about 10 minutes he made it to the ground and died about 30 seconds after he reached the ground...i wish i would have taken pictures of him, but didnt have my camera, hes about a 20 poind plus male coon...i skinned him out and im ganna tan the hide myself...ill show some pictures when its done...well i beter get ready to go out and hunt this evening, my buddy saw a big 7 point walk right by our ground blind the other day!

Well all, the Indiana season ended last Sunday. As usually, December is not a good month for me to do much hunting (though I did bag a couple does in one of my few outings).
All in all, I had a great year with 4 does. I had my oportunities at some real good bucks, but none were what I was looking for this year. I could have put more points on the board for us many times, but I wanted to let them grow up a little more. It'll pay off. One of the 120's 8 pointers I let walk, made it. I got pictures of him just the other day. He'll make someone a nice trophy next year (maybe me!).
I want to say thanks to everyone on the team. It was fun. Thanks again to Bill and Renzos. What a cool deal that was.
Good luck to any that still have seasons open and be safe.
Come on turkey season!

sorry to hear that billkay - prayers are being sent buddy.
I have one more day to hunt - Saturday.
This past Saturday I did bag 2 more does. I gave those deer to a couple of other people that need the deer more than I do. All in all I have had a great season: 8 pointer, 9 pointer, 3 does and a bear! It has been the best year yet.
