THis is not for fun! Hunting is not fun!!!! jk, that is about as serious as I get. I look foward to seeing how this develops. Question...do we only get to enter one deer, but can improve that deer as we go along?

can we get a team name, and change this thread to that or something. I am guessing we are all classier than Team 25. Where is everyone here from, and how are the seasons going so far? Need2hunt, are you anywhere near the Grigsby?

Grigsby is down around Springfield if I remember right, so I'm about 2.5-3 hours away from there.

My season starts this Saturday, I'm pretty much busy all day today, leaving tomorrow and then hunting the weekend. Good Luck everybody, hopefully have some pics to post when I get back.

Oh and as for a team name, I'm good with whatever you guys decide.

Well team here's how my opening day went.
We had some heavy storms here this morning, around 8am. we thought it had let up so we headed to the woods. As I was getting to my stand I saw a fawn. I then got into the stand and no more then did I get settled in here comes another heavy storm rolling our way. It didn't take me long to decide to get the heck out of there....

After raining nearly all day about 3pm. me and Mike headed back out for an evening hunt. At 6pm. i heard a grunt that came from a near by creek. About 15 minutes later I heard a bunch of splashing going on. I figured it was 2 bucks scraping.
At 7:15pm. 2 does and a fawn came out. About 5 minutes later a buck came through and shortly behind him was another. Both bucks were about 2 1/2 years old.

Well needless to say I didn't pull off a shot but it did turn out to be a pretty good day....

Total disaster for me.......Saw plenty of deer wait until I tell you this one......DUMMY ME...

Was out this evening sitting in a nice ground blind waitting on the deer......So far so good right.......Well the deer showed up all right everywhere but where I needed them to be....

I had a group of three nice does to my right and a single doe to my left and both were feeding off in the opposite directions and moving away from me...So I make the decission to low crawl with bow in hand towards the single doe.....before it really gets dark.....well after about 20 min. of cat an mouse I figured I was about 20-25 yrds and was close enough.......so I get to my knee's and draw,,,,OOOps I forgot to turn on my sight lite... and can't see a thing.... so I let down and to my suprise she never moved......so I turn on the light and draw again, this time she does the stare down routine with me......MAN THAT SEEMED TO TAKE FOREVER......She finally quarters away from me and I release........OH NO,,stupid me must have used the dang wrong pin and the arrow sails right over her back....... bye bye big doe......

So not did I only loose the deer because of sheer stupidity I lost a darn nice crested arrow,,,with a expensive Grim Reaper Broadhead.....

Live and learn I guess next time Im passing on the stalking bit,,and doing the waitting game......low crawling in the meadow with the FLU isn't the best tatic out there folks..... DUMMY ME !!

Well team it's 5:46am. and me and Mike are fixin' to head out to the woods.
I'm going to hunt this stand this morning, but I may have to do some fine tuning and try to get closer to them...
I've been seeinf 8 bucks in this area. 3 of them are real good shooters...
The temps today is going to jump up to 92 degrees. Not the kind of weather I was hopeing for...But oh well...
I guess. will see what happens ...

Good Luck...

Howdy, I'll give you the short version, If you want the longer version you'll have to read my journal (once I get it started LOL)

Got in camp Friday night watched a 140+ class buck in the alfalfa field. Saw nothing Saturday morning, I saw 4 does Sat evening but wind was all wrong, Sue saw 5 does and got a shot but went low and only got a few white hairs. Sunday morning I saw 5 but no where close to me, Sue saw nothing. Sunday night I had fog roll in and couldn't see 20 yards which might be why i saw nothing, Sue saw 15 and shot a big doe, must have hit her a little high as we didn't get blood until approx 50 yards from where she shot her. When we did get blood it was bright red and plenty of it, followed it approx 100 yards and it disapeared - looke until 1:30 in the morning and then from 7 am till 1 pm never found it.

Gary your more experienced at this bow stuff than I can you explain this lack of blood, with these a little high behind the shoulder shots,,,or is it a mystery to you as well...????

This has had me to a point where I was seriuosly thinking of giving up bow hunting...... http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

can you explain this lack of blood, with these a little high behind the shoulder shots

[/ QUOTE ]

I can explain the initial lack of blood... we had a hard time picking up the initial blood trail, fact is it didn't START until 50 yards from where the deer was shot. Then throw in the factor that we know that she had no exit wound. When shooting out of a stand your exit wound is normally lower on the body than the entry. The bleeding isn't alway instant on the outside but is on the inside, the blood has to fill up inside the chest cavity to the point of the lowest wound to start getting a good blood trail. if she had an exit wound I would have expected some splatter on impact and then picking up at least a few drops in the first 10 yards and progressing to a good trail within 20 yards. With no exit wound I get no initial splatter on impact, and have to wait for the cavity to fill up to the higher entry wound that was a little high to begin with. Also factor in that this doe kept the arrow in her, further blocking blood flow. Typically when you trail a deer with the arrow still in it you'll come to a point in the trail that the blood just gushes out, that usually means it broke the arrow off or pulled the arrow out, look around to see if you can find your arrow or parts of it and expect to find your deer within 20 yards or so.

What I can't explain is the abruptness of losing the blood trail... we followed good blood for 100 yards (equals 150 yards from where it was shot). I've followed some pretty sketchy blood trails over the years and I'm talking a pin prick of blood every 15-20 yards. This blood trail was one of the better ones I'ld followed, it was like someone walking with a dripping paintbrush, and when I saw it I had absolutely no doubts that we were going to find that deer. We got to a point where the deer entered a path into the woods, we could tell 2 things, 1 it slowed down as we were finding puddles of blood and 2 it was starting to stagger. The deer then started down hill along a cut path, blood stayed consistant, never slowed down and then stopped without warning. It stopped at one of the worst spots when tracking, at a fork in the path it was following. We marked last blood and checked both paths, nothing. there was a deep dried creek bed that ran completely around the base of the hill we were on, we walked that and found no deer and no trace of the deer getting down and up out of that creek bed. We went back to last blood and started circling trying to pick up some sign, nothing. When blood stops like that I spend a good deal of time on my hands and knees looking for blood, couldn't find a thing.

My past experience has been that when the blood stops like that it means that the deer makes a sudden change of direction and beds down in the thickest ugliest mess it can find within approx 40 yards lots of times only 10 yards from the stop of the trail, either it didn't happen this time or we missed it in the dark, then in the light and then when we brought the dogs out to check for it.

Also when the blood stops like that take the time to backtrack the blood trail to see if the deer backtracked up the same path and went a different direction.

In all my years I have NEVER had such a good trail end like this, it was like someone laid out a plastic sheet for her to die on and then wrapped her up and hauled her away. I have personally only lost 3 deer in my lifetime, 2 of which were my fault on bad shots (1 shotgun, 1 bow), one was due to a sudden downpour that washed everything away. Sue's deer would be #4 as I'll take some responsibility in it, but it's the first one that I have absolutely no idea why the blood stopped http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif .

LAst thing I'll say is I shoot G5 montecs, I will be starting to test some other heads out as I have not been happy with the blood trail I've gotten with them. I love everything else about them but have heard that others have had the same problem and then again some people haven't, but it's something I'll test to see if that might be one of the issues.

Thanks for the explanation or atleast what you could explain. Man this sounds all to familiar,,,, http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My shot was from an elevated stand position out to what I thought to be 40 yrds ( too far for the shot ?? ) maybe so I'll take fault for that.... but to me it seemed to be a fatal shot,,, but this obviously was not the case.... We found the shaft with the intial search but the broadhead had somehow come unscrewed and was still missing (guesing it was still in her ) This is my second year of archery, I have been second guessing every move I made that evening, until I read your post......

Doe's it make me feel any better ?? NOPE but I do now see this happens....I feel for you and your wife becuase I know exactly how you both ( especially her ) feel about loosing a deer even after you have expendened every resource trying to find her....

Loosing my deer has really played with my head this is the very first deer I've ever lost and Im totally sick about it..... I've taken some time off from bow hunting just to settle myself down and relax...

Your story has helped with some questions I've had and I thank you for that.....I hope this hasn't affected your wife as it has with me...... Good luck to her and you with the rest of your hunting season...

sorry to hear that. I have been hunting since I was 13 and can remember both deer I have lost as well. One was last year on a poor bow shot and rain washed it out, and one was a muzzleloader where I shot a doe, she dropped, then I reloaded looked up and she was gone. Weird thing was she was in the middle of a field when she fell. Never found any sign, never found any blood. It is really frustrating when something like that happens, but sounds like this one was just a fluke. Keep hunting and I will update yall about my weekend on Tuesday or Wednesday

Well hunted the weeked with nothing to show from it, my excuse went from "just have to get them close enough" from the Saturday morning hunt where I had 5 does just out of bow range... to "just get them out of the brush" on Sunday night where i had a young 6 point at 7 yards but no shooting lane. oh well.

Well team I went out Sunday morning. I got to the stand at 6:30am. I had a deer beding at the base of my stand. As I got closer to my stand it moved out about 5 yards from me and just stood there and watched me...The crazy thing never blew and finally just walked off...
At 7:10am. I thought I would cast out some grunt calls. I hit the call 5 or 6 times. I saw something coming my way. Yep it was a big ole mature 10 point buck. He trotted with in 15 yards from me and stopped...On the backside of a tree... http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
I couldn't even get a shot off. The way he was angling to me, if he would have taken 6 more steps I would have had a real nice buck down...
The buck stood there a good while and then V'ed off. Keeping the trees between me and him... http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Well what can I say...It was so close, but yet so far away...
Maybe nest time...
Sunday evening wehen I went out, I had a bobcat come with in 3 yards of my stand...
I have been hearing alot hogs in this area also. I bumped several going into my stand Sunday evening...

All and all I had a blast...
The temps here jumped back up into the 90's again http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif it's suppose drop back down into the 70's by this week end. So I think I'm going to wait until then to back out...

Then sunday morning walked through a lot of thick on my way to the stand and jumped deer out. however at 8:40 things heated up. I saw either a 6 or 8 for a split second. Grunted but he wouldnt come back. Then I saw 3 does with a nice 8 trailing them. I fawn bleated trying to get them to all come back. The does did the buck didnt 15 min later they were 10 yds from my tree. I took the biggest one she only went about 50 yds with a solid double lung shot. This is my first full size deer with a bow. What a rush, and what a drag!!!

Only thing I can think of is Lunatics Anonymos http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I'll go along with whatever you all want.

Sue and I went out to her dads last night, and my good fortune hasn't changed. Had a N-NW wind so I was expecting movement from behind or the left of me. I was sitting in one of the stands on the property and had to clean some branchs on my tree so I could get a good shot behind me. At 5:15 I did a rattling sequence and at 5:17 had a 1.5 year old 8 point come in behind me. there is only about a 20 yard opening and he has no clue as he makes his way across the opening. Well I spin in the seat and stand up and find out that there is a limb on another tree that blocks about 50% of that shooting lane http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif and I have to watch him disappear into the thicket. I waited about a minute and then reached around the tree and gave the antlers a little shake. About 10 seconds later I see him stick his nose out of the thicket, and then here he comes right at me... only problem is he is on the right side of the tree which there is no way to get a shot through http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

So I didn't kill anything but I guess I'm happy to say that I rattled in a buck to within 4 yards of my stand. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Great patience on your part tho,, I've been struggling with the patience dept. this year,, but Im getting better at it... I had 6 doe's and a nice 8 pointer in my view last evening, but nothing in shooting distance.... http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif,, It definately was nice to see somethingother than doe's tho...

Hopefully rifle season will bring that 8 point out into one of those lanes and I get to bring him home with me..... http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sue and I went out last night, it was cold and on the rainy side. The small 8 point and another deer were bedded directly behind the stand, I know this as I got to watch them leave as i sat down http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Decided to try a different spot but didn't see anything else the rest of the night.

when are we all going to get in the woods again? I might get to go wed after class, if not then I will be in saturday and sunday morning in TN where I saw thoes two good bucks. Only this time I will have my encore smoke pole with me so I can reach out and touch them. I just realized I left my permenate kill tags at home for my 3 does so far this year, and didnt get picks. I hope mom didnt throw them away. Either way, I am holding out for a 6 or bigger the rest of the time on stand...unless I have my bow in my hand. I will prob. try and shoot one more doe on a drive or easing around, but the quality hunting time where I am still and hunting hard is buck time. Just thought I would throw yall an update. Have a good one.

I'm more limited on my hunting this year (unfortunately) and my luck still hasn't gotten any better. This morning I was sitting (on the ground) in a cornfield along the side of a grass field, expecting to see something coming from the north to northeast, I've got a great view of the field and can see pretty far in all directions. Well I'm looking to the east and then move my eyes as far to the west before turning my head... well I catch something moving and do the rookie mistake of swinging my head real quick to see what it was... it's just a 200+ # 8 point that would go in the 130-140 range... he was within 10 yards of me when I saw him and needless to say my head jerk (and the possibly slight profanities http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) got me busted and he turned tail and was gone... going to head back out there in just a few minutes and try it again... and yes I need some rest http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'm just hoping to kill a deer sometime soon so I can start filling up the freezer again. He would have definitely filled a good part of the freezer http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Went out tonight but didn't see anything, tomorrow my schedule is full but I'm going to try to get out to one of the neighbors to my dad's place and see if he'll let me hunt out there this week and next. Saturday i have to head down to Springfield to check out the church and park where I'll be shooting my cousin's wedding.

Right now it's hard to miss a day in the field as the bucks are starting to move and they are all swelled up... like I said I'll just keep at it and see what happens

kinda bad news guys...the gentlemans land that I saw thoes two good bucks on is in CO elk hunting. So this weekend i am going to pulaski, tn where I killed my first deer this year and saw so many (including a 4 pointer). I am not going to shoot unless it is 6 or bigger still, but the odds down there are slimmer. I might shoot a doe if I see one on the way out of the woods. We will just have to see. Good luck Need2hunt, just stay at it and it will all come together!!

It was hot (upper 70's) and very windy, and my little bro had my muzzelloader. However, Patrick missed a small six or eight, so he got to feel the adrenaline! Ill be out maybe this sunday evening in GA then TN gun opens the next weekend. Good luck to all!

Howdy all and Happy Thanksgiving!!! Been gone for a while and just starting to catch up on a few things but thought I'ld let you know how everything went.

We bowhunted 2.5 days before shotgun season rolled in, we were seeing 50+ deer a day and it looked like we were going to be able to pick and choose as far as taking our deer. Both Sue and I had opportunities with our bows on deer but passed hoping for the big boys to come by. then shotgun season rolled around and everything changed, we went from 50+ to 10 and under for deer sightings per day. The bigger deer were locked down with does and not moving at all, and suddenly nothing was moving.

I shot at a doe on Friday night but when I looked for her we found no blood and no deer. Saturday I did a small push through that spot and found her, it was pretty cold so the meat was fine. I shoot Remington CoreLokt sabots, the benefit is they give me a range of 200 yards, what I'm finding to be the negative is that the bullet goes through so quick that it sears the wound and I don't get any blood. I shot that doe at 70 yards, bullet went through her shoulder and out low on the other side, traveled another 90+ yards and deflected off the pond dam and then landed in the middle of the pond. the doe ran 60 yards, no blood from where I hit her to where she lay AND zero blood on the ground where she lay.

Saturday was a disappointment for everyone and we planned to hunt Sunday morning and then do some pushes to see if we could get anything moving. First 3 pushes amazingly resulted in seeing no deer. 4th push had a big doe coming right into Sue and I. It was coming right in and then veered to the left, Sue was positioned about 15 yards to my right and I asked if she could kill her. She told me to stop her and I did the maaaaa and the doe stopped for the perfect shot... Sue whispers over that I stopped her behind 3 trees and she couldn't shoot, so I shot and missed high and the doe took 3 steps forward and then I shot and dropped her.

We pushed another spot which resulted in Sue getting a button buck. And then Sunday evening Sue shot a decent 9 point and the landowners boy shot a 4 point.

I'll get get my doe in the entry thread before the end of next week.

Glad you were able to finally hit the woods Gary.... and CONGRATS on the Doe... a deer is a deer, and you take what is presented at that time.... http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm having the same problem here,, during Bow Season I had all kinds of deer around but thay stayed out of bow range.....
Come rifle season nada,,, I've seen a few doe's but nothing with antlers..... http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'll keep at it until the end,, which is Dec. 15th. with the ML..... but anything I take has to have atleast 2 or more points on one side to be legal... but like I said I'll keep at it until the end....

Good luck on the rest of your season and hope to see a great looking buck added to your season.. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

glad to see some posting here. I havent been around all that much due to school, work and the last two days hunting.

My little brother and I went opening weekend of gun, and saw deer but nothing turned out right. I saw a dozen deer opening morning but some scented me, some saw me (i had to hunt on the ground in a funnel cuz patrick had my stand) and some (2 spikes) i didnt want to shoot.

That evening Patrick saw two bucks but neither offered a shot (he really wanted a buck with horns since he has never killed one)\

Then I came back monday night and patrick and I drove to west TN to hunt tuesday and wednesday morning. I caught a pretty 8 cruzing for does at about 9 o'clock and droped him at 30 yds. then yesterday morning, patrick got a nice 6 point! he also killed a doe and I killed a small 6 so we are set on meat for awhile. it was a great trip. ANyways, happy thanksgiving!

Good luck to all, and good eatting

Well gang needless to say I had the worst season I have ever had here in my life due to the weather, the temps, tresspassers and my new bow blowing up on me.
The deer here just weren't moving. At all...
Me and Roadkill aka Mike as hunted every chance we got and hard.
I really hate to let the team down. But all I can say is I tried.
I would like to congrats those that got one and also to say it was a pleasure to have everyone here as team mates.
I did have a good time trying. Just being able to get out there and doing what I love to do. Is what it's all about.
I'm looking forward to doing it again next year and I hope we are all on the same team...

Good luck to all in the future and Happy Hunting...
