Some of you guys will grow to hate me. I passed on a big (but not huge) muley buck yesterday because he looked like he was still a young (3.5 year-old) buck with good potential. I still have the rest of this week and all of next week to bowhunt mule deer. I won't be as selective towards the end of next week.

Hey guys,

Everyone is quite on are team. Just wanted to check in and see how everyones hunting is going. I went out last night it finally stopped raining, and so one nice buck but he didn't come within range. Nothing was happening in the late afternoon so I tried rattleing and he come running up from the bottom. Something just wasn't right and he stopped about 60 yards from me. He probably would have scored in the 140's. Hopefully I see him again this weekend.

I went out last night I saw 6 deer...2 does and 2 fawns...a 8 point buck that busted me (bad wind) and another about 200 yards away and going about 200 mph...I hope to get back out this weekend.

Yep this weekend is RAIN,RAIN,RAIN here but I hope it stops some time friday evening so I can sneak out and get a shot at something....anyway got a long season to go and my buddy from up north says my foodplot in front of my stand for gun season is the best one he has and he has seen a HUGE 10 or 12 point in it lots of times.....I would rather get a big one with the bow (xbow) but if I have to I will shoot him if he comes out....lol

I passed on a good but not great whitetail on Tuesday. I had stalked to within 10 yards of him and it was windy enough that I probably could have snuck in and spray painted my initials on him. I should have had my camera in my hands instead of my bow. Wednesday there was no wind and I got busted by a big muley at 50 yards. You need wind for open country bowhunting. I'm not regretting the decision on the whitetail - I saw a big whitetail buck yesterday evening but it was too late to attempt a stalk. He's the buck I will be after this year.

I'm heading out again on Saturday to try arrow a muley.

AdvantageTimberLou

I have been seeing lots of does and a small spikehorn. Seen a buck last night, not sure how big but a dang squirrel chased him off. Weather has been in the mid 50's but the wind seems to be strong and you have to be careful not to get busted. Will try again tomorrow evening and then on the weekend in the mornings.

Good luck guys!! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey guys,

Got us a nice 10 point last night. Came in around 6:15 pm and gave a nice shot. I've been seeing this buck all year but never to get a shot till tonight. It was 65 degrees so I had to take pictures after I cut it up. I have 2 stnds in a rugged piece of state land that I haven't hunted yet this year. Today is opening day of small game, so if the rain stops, I'm heading for one of those stands. It is about a 50 minute hike from the truck though. Really, really hope the rain stops.

Nice buck, JPGS22. I got lucky on Saturday, and it was warm so I had to cut him up in the field also.

This is the buck that got away from me back in September. This time he was too busy rubbing the trees to notice me sneaking down the ridge. I put an arrow through him from 12-15 yards. He has 17 scorable points and should give the Black Jacks 22 points.

hey everyone i gort out on friday night and we saw about 23 deer, and a moose.the one group of deer that we tryed to stalk on were in dense brush and we couldnt find them again so we kept goin and we saw a grouse, i tried to get a shot at it but it was a really skittish one so after about an hour we had to leave and on the way back we checked one of the fields that we might hunt and there was a group of about 15 deer so we are goin to try and get out there again this friday, we didnt try a stalk because we didnt have enough shooting light left and they were on the other side of the field.

That how big of a test that was. And it was the last grade of the Semester! But my dad agreed to if i get a 90% our higher he would let me come out with him Friday! Im so pumped and cant wait!

Good luck to everyone

I've entered my muley buck. The right brow sticker point doesn't show up so well in the photo (but Saskbucks can vouch for it), so it might get downgraded to a 16-pointer (21 points for the team). I'm heading out muzzleloading for whitetails this weekend. Good luck everyone this weekend.

Well since the time changed I'll only be getting out there mostly on weekends unless I can get away from work early.
I'm hoping to see some of the bucks that I saw at the first of bow season come around since the rut has started.
My wife informed me yesterday that I need to meet her at work at noon on Fri. for her to take me to eat for my birthday. I told her I'd much rather her take me hunting but that didn't work so I guess I'll have to come out of the woods for lunch anyhow. Then pick up the kids from school and get out there and wait for that magical last hour of light.

I'm on nights next week and on vacation the week of Thanksgiving which is the first week of our 16 day rifle season. I'll get to hunt a couple of mornings next week and most of friday, before rifle opens and WWIII starts.

ok heres the story.. we were origillaly stalking a muley doe and i looked back to this hill on my right and there was these two other bucks sparring on the hill so my dads buddy went up and around from the right and my dad and i cam from the front , and just when we were at the bottom of the hill this third buck came trotting down from my right so i crouched down behind a tree and waited for a shot, so it started to slow down it was quartering away at about 150 yds so i took a shot, it ran about 50 yds and it just fell down, it was my first time shooting a high powerd rifle, and I didnt ruing any meat exept for a bit of the liver which we ate that night. i was so exited. im still working on the pictures, i just need to take a pic of the tag and ill get them up.i can still take a whitetail buck so i mighy be able to score a few extra point before the end of november. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well I finally get to upgrade my doe to an 8 point!!!!!!!!
We shot this buck on a friends property this evening about 4:00. He was with 2 does. He wieghed 130 pounds field dressed and has a 13 inch spread. They took the jaw bone at the check station and guessed him at 3 1/2 years old.
He does have one point that may not quallify. It counts for a point in the states books but I don't know about the contest.

Story....

Ok we got out in the woods about 6:30..And sat for about 1-2 hours. So my partner went on and drove this swail to see if he could jump any deer for me. He jumped 3 does. 2 went out of shooting distance and 1 came within shooting distance but never gave me a shot. So i reloacted by a salt block to see if i could catch some does or a buck feeding. Most of them were bedded. Then i here a

Crunch!!....I figured it was some squirrels b/c that place is loaded with them...So i look back and theres a pretty nice size button buck. Turned broadside about 30 yards took 1 shell and droped him in his tracks...

I have some field pics but they will have to get developed 1st.

I should still be able to upgrade my mule deer buck to 22 points from 21 when I get around to taking a better photo of the left brow sticker (it wasn't clear enough in the other photo for Gary to tell if it was an inch). You hunt like I do, I tend to pass up the small ones too in hopes of seeing the larger ones. I plan on trying to take a doe at least but my hopes are on a 6 or 8 that I seen just before gun season. 75 yards out from my treestand. I don't practice those shots with my bow and I didn't see them with my gun! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif That's hunting.

Just wanted to post this picture, for you guys to see. A couple friends of mine find sheds of this deer last year on the land we hunt. He was killed in rifle season 10 minutes down the road from my stand. Oh well, I guess someone had to get lucky. Just was hoping it would be me! Anyways a good deer for pennslyvania. 28 points, and a 23 inch spread. http://www.realtree.com/img/500/medium/28Point_2_.jpg

maddhunter

Muff, I wouldn't worry so much about the points. I would've passed too. I passed up a decent 7 point first of our bow season. I took the buck I did in rifle season because 1; I hadn't seen another buck while hunting since the 7 point and 2; He wasn't a monster but being with the kids the adrenaline took over. I'm not regretting shooting my buck, he is a good buck for me. But, had I been by myself and had time to study him I probably wouldn't have shot him, But on the other hand I kinda was in the "If it's brown it's down!" mode so it's hard to say.
I say shoot the buck you want for you and don't worry about our points. If we win that will just be the bonus!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
On another note, we finally are getting a little snow this evening. Temps are going to stay well below freezing through Sat. so the snow should stay on the ground till Sat. morning when I'll be out there again. Have to work Fri. so won't get out until Sat. anyhow.
And again GOOD LUCK!!!!

tedicast
12-08-2005, 06:28 AM
Muff, you gotta hunt the way you hunt. There is no way I would shoot a deer, that I would otherwise let walk, just to score points in a contest. Deer hunting is personal. It is between you and the animal you hunt. A contest should never effect that. You definately did the right thing. Good luck the rest of the season.

Went out this morning in hopes of seeing some deer. I haven't been back in the woods on the nieghbors place since Thanksgiving.
I sat untill I got cold and hadn't seen anything yet so I dicided to get down and take a little walk to see what deer were left after rifle season. The snow had just melted the day before so as temps rose slowly the leaves got soft and much quiter. I made my way down the old fence line, by the well used pond, and on around to top of the hill. I stop for a breather in my favorite area to squirrel hunt and sat down on a fallen log and contenplated whether to take a #2 there or wait untill I got to the bottom of the hill. Just as I decided to wait I caught movement to my left, it was a deer. I grabbed my bow and nocked an arrow. As it got closer I could see horns, big horns!!!!!!!! I crouched down as he was on course to pass me at 30 yards, I had my spot picked out when I was going to draw and I thought to myself, this is awesome, as I shook uncontrollably. He got about 50 yards from me and turned to his right and walked away from me down the same direction I had just came from.
Although I didn't get a shot it was an awesome experience and now that the bucks are back to thier usuall paterns I will be back on that hill next weekend only a little closer to where he came up the other side and turned.
The best I could tell he is a wide 10. He is about double the size of the one I entered into the contest.
It would be awesome to get my first wallhanger and add a couple more points to our score.
Good Luck to those still hunting!!!!!!!!!!

Found a new honey hole!!!!!! It's the same area I told ya'll about seeing the nice buck earlier.
Used a friends climber this morning and went back to same place I saw the buck. It's a long hawl,(3/4 of a mile up and down) but it was worth it. I saw 12 does from the time it got light to the time I left. I was in there about 4hrs. Had to leave out early to pick up daughter from preschool.
Didn't see any bucks but plenty of sighn, even saw a fresh rub that wasn't there last sunday. There are still acorns on the ground!!!!! Those deer were rooting around in the leaves like hogs.
I'll be back out there in the morning, wish me luck!!!!!
Good luck to everyone!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and I feel sorry for you all that have to carry a climber in and out all the time!!!!!! That extra 19 pounds like to killed me by the time I got back to the truck. My shoulders are still sore. I'll have to get in better shape if I'm going to buy me one.

Well I had 3 doe(1 mature & 2 yearlings) come through this morning @7:45 and about 3 minutes later here comes a spike trailing the does. I don't know if one of the yearlings was in heat or what. He had his tail going crazy. One second it was straight out, then up, then down, then straight out again. Reason why I am pretty sure he was trailing the yearlings is, the yearlings took a different path as the mature doe. The big doe came through on a straight path and the other two came down the fence further before crossing. When the spike came in on the trail and crossed the fence he kinda paused as if he was confused, he then headed straight to me and as soon as he got to where the yearlings crossed he was on the trail again and wouldn't stop for nothing until I give him the snort and wheeze, he stop for a second and then was off on the trail again. Pretty wierd but exciting none the less.
Gonna try a different stand in the morning.
Good luck guys!!!!!!!!!!!

Guys I got skunked! Sorry. Seen a few button bucks and doe fawns but nothing mature. Sat the last 3 days of the season for 4+ hours. Seen deer, just small ones and no bucks!

Sorry guys for letting down the team, had chances before gun season for mature does but held out thinking I would do better. It came back to haunt me!!

Seems that once the firearm season starts we lose alot of mature does and have a bunch of orphan fawns. I wouldn't worry though they seem like they were able to fend for themselves quite well.

Looks like I am eating a tag this year!! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Well.................. I was in bed sick, from Thursdaynight, untill yesterday, and I'm still not recovered, Needless to say, because of a nasty stomach bug, I missed Saturdays hunt. My bro hunted the property on Fri. and said there was a ton of sign. My biggest fear is the fact the bucks are dropping antlers already. I know of a couple people on local forums that have shot antlerless bucks. Sooooo............ I'll do my best. 3 Saturdays left.

Well guys I'm done, with nothing to upgrade my doe. I'm sorry I couldn't have scored a buck to get us a few more points. In almost 40 hunts this year, I only had 3 bucks in bow range, 2 of them were very good bucks, that probably would have put us in the lead. They were both within 15 yards, but it was early season and very thick, and they never hit a shooting lane. I had one other buck, a forkie I believe walk under my stand about 20 minutes before legal shooting light. Oh well, that's why they call it hunting I guess.

It was a pleasure being teamed with everyone. I feel I made a bunch of new friends on this team. We did our best. We had a 90% success rate on our team which is definately nothing to sneeze at. We really need to thank LDB, as he is the one who kept us close in this contest with his 22 points.

I had fun team, sorry I let you all down, when I need to shoot a mature doe all I seen was fawns and in rifle season I just seen spikes and smaller bucks and on our land we pass them up so next year they might be bigger. Big boys were there but not at the right time for me to get a shot.

Not trying to make excuses though, I hunted in some crappy weather and just great weather, just couldn't seal the deal. I did make some good friends on this team and it was fun to be part of it.

Thanks for making this a fun hunting season! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Your pap's a smart man, never did I have a bad day in the woods, seeing nothing was still a thrill as I got to do something most in society never get to do and that is to see nature at work. Seeing nothing and getting nothing is still better sitting at work for 8 to 10 hours a day. Give me a bad day in the woods anytime! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
