THE GREAT COLORADO ELK HUNT

where? the mountains of colorado. although the exact spot has not been selected yet, i'm favoring the taylor reservoir area just west of buena vista, and about 25 miles north of gunnison. folks, this is elk country! camp will be about the 9,000' level, with elk both higher and lower. both lake and stream fishing will be campside, or a short walk away.

when? that's up to you folks. we'll take a poll and the majority wins. for archery, the season starts august 26. for rifle, the season is oct. 21-29. in either season, camp will be set up 2 days prior, and will be taken down after the hunt, which is 7 days of hunting. hunters can come and go as they please.

how to get there? this is a prime chance for r.t. forum members to get together geographically, and drive on out together on a share expense basis. a perfet scenario would be for the guy with a truck or suburban to get 2 or 3 others, and head to colorado. throw the camping gear in the trailer with the 4 wheelers, put the cruise on, and enjoy. everyone shares the costs. want to fly? come on out. i'll have once a day pickup service from the colorado springs airport. cost is gas only, shared by the number of riders in the truck. it's about 3 hours into camp from the airport.

the camp? just a spot to park motor homes, tents, or what have you. i use canvas tents. bring what you want. my persoal site will have about 6 tents, each with a heater. the larger tent will be "the pro's nest", where you can talk with some of the pro's who may attend. there will also be some moderators there. just who, we won't say. pot luck, guys.

another feature i'll offer, on a need basis, is tent space. those flying will need a spot of ground to crash on. bring your own sleeping bag and whatever. i'll also have a tent strictly for the ladies, should there be any coming.

this is a do it yourself hunt and camp, fully self guided. very low cost. for those flying, i think i can talk my wife into making us some pre-cooked meals like stews, meat loaf, etc. so, you can eat for what i expect to be about $7.00 a dinner. hopefully we'll get some elk steaks the first day! but, if you fly, you won't go hungry. (camp cook wanted... no pay, cold working conditions, must cut wood for the stove, abusive clientele... any persons dream. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

costs: elk license is $488., mule deer are $293., 5 day fishing is $21.00. go to the colorado division wildlife web site at www.wildlife.state.co.us (http://www.wildlife.state.co.us) and find out all the details.

there will be horses for rent should anyone want one. i prefer to walk. i'll also have a full list of stuff to bring as the time gets closer.

i want this to be a good, friendly, christian camp. having a drink or 2 is fine, but no drunks please. swearing will be only at me, and kept in low tones. if the ladies come to hunt, remember that they came to hunt. a clean, respectful camp is all i ask.

scott will keep this post up top for 45 days. we want to hear from you! are you interested? want to proceed? or, is this just another dumb idea? we'll see what happens and what response we get in that 45 days, and go from there. i'm open to any and all suggestions, criticisms, ideas, etc. feel free to pm me or respond here.
now the ball is in your court! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

What an incredible opportunity for those who have never hunted the elusive wapiti or the noble muley. If indeed there will be some "pros" there to offer advise and guidance, what more could one ask for? Just the camaraderie of fellow hunters (imagine the stories that will be told) in the majestic setting of the Rockies would be well worth the price of the license. I will try to fit it into my plans for the coming year, all depending on my luck in several drawings for various limited tags here in Montana and Utah. I would favor the archery season if it extends into the heat of the rut, but anytime hunting is a good time. For those of you thinking you will put it off until you can afford it, you may never be able to "afford" it, but then again you may not be able to afford missing the experience. Next year may never come, let's go hunting this year!

I have some serious money coming in in the next couple weeks. I'll have to see what I can do. A bowhunt for Elk is one of my top 3 dream hunts.

Sounds like an awesome idea! Not sure if I could make it this year though, still pretty well focused on tech school. Hopefully the will be a yearly event.

People interested in this have to realize that gun season tags application deadline is in April. You foot the bill for the tag in advance. If you are drawn, they send you a tag.

You must have a hunters safety card to get Colorado license. This goes for everyone, not just kids, if you don't have one you have to take a hunters safety class before the season.

Are there any preference points needed for gun season tags? What zone is this?

buckee
01-01-2006, 12:12 PM
It would be fun just to be there. Interesting proposition for sure.
hunters safety card is something I don't have. I'm still protesting the need to take my hunter's ed/safety course and/or challenge the test (for a fee of course) all over again, since these new ridiculous gun laws came out. I took my hunter's safety course when I was 15 years old, and don't see why I, after 40 years of hunting, need to take it again. I do have my POL (Possession Only Permit) http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Sounds like it might be a bit of a hassle and a bit pricey for some of us Canucks to hunt there, but just being there and sharing the experience with others would be a hoot. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Cool idea for sure.

Great Idea,

Bull elk tags for Unit 55 ofColorado's 2nd rifle season, ( the dates of the proposed hunt) are over the counter and unlimited in number. You do not need to apply for a OTC bull license, as long as you buy it before opening day you are set. If you would prefere better odds of tagging out you could apply for a cow elk tag, $253 last year, and should draw with no preference points. During any of Colorado's rifle seasons you may hunt with the legal weapon of your choice (rifle, bow, blackpowder). 55 is a pretty good elk unit.

If you are wanting to hunt deer you will need a pile of preference points to draw a mule deer. Last year there were 170 mule deer buck tags for unit 55 during 2nd rifle and 802 applicants of which 40% were available to non residents. It will be less in 2006. Here is a link to CDOW's big game page. If you want to click on statistics you can visit 'hunt recaps' and figure out the preference points. They are not easy to figure out. http://wildlife.state.co.us/hunt/BigGame/

Sounds like a great idea and fun to.
I would want to bowhunt. That's been my dream for along time. I'll have to see what I can do.

As far as having the hunters safety card. I took the coarse many moons ago but I'd be dogged if I know where it's at. Heck I was a kid back then.lol
Does this mean I would have to take it again or can I get a copy of it somewhere?

Question on License fees. Does the $488 include license AND tag, or are these bought separate?

MUDRUNNER
01-04-2006, 01:18 PM
Man,that sure sounds like a great time!I've always wanted to do an elk hunt.I didn't know you could get non-resident tags otc. That's great. Is that for the second rifle season only?

If I have my hunters education card issued by Illinois, is that enough to get a liscence,or is there some type of federal card I need?

Can you tag a cow with a bull elk tag or is that for a bull only?

Is this all public ground and are a.t.v.'s allowed for game removal?

It sounds great, but I'm not sure what to expect.I would be happy bagging a cow.I don't have a rifle, but that might give me a reason to get one.A bow hunt would be great to.
Does Colorado have a % let-off rule for archery equipment?

Also, ideal dates for me would be anywhere August 25th -September 7th for the Archery, and October 20th-November 2nd for the rifle hunt

Haven't decided which I would prefer, but am leaning towards possibly Archery......

Phaseolus (BeanMan)
01-04-2006, 02:58 PM
Gator,

Last years price of $488 includes everything you need.

Mudrunner,

OTC tags are available for Archery (archery tags are either sex), 2nd and 3rd rifles Seasons. The rifle tags are Bull only. (Mostly) You could apply for a cow tag in any of those seasons. Muzzleoader, 1st Rifle, and 4th rifle are tags you would have to apply for. You would have a good chance of drawing whatever tag you wanted. I bought a leftover Either Sex elk tag (and filled it with a 6x5 Bull) for 4th rifle last fall after work got in the way of my Blackpowder hunt. Most, but not all of the land is public. You may not take a 4 wheeler off of any designated trail. The new rules for forest service land this year say if it is not posted as open then it is off limits. IMHO it is a good rule. You will need a packframe or a crew of gorillas' to drag one out. Mine took five trips of 4 miles RT each to get my bull out. Thankfully I have friends who helped. My Wife even packed a front quarter out and she is 41.

good luck

The Colo. web site has all the specifics regarding what is acceptable for Hunters Ed.

MUDRUNNER
01-04-2006, 04:53 PM
It looks like any state issued hunter safety card is acceptable.
It looks like the let-off rule for a bow is 80%,so I should be good there too.And if I read it right I can even use my 12 gauge slug gun during rifle season if I didn't want to buy a rifle. This sure is awefull tempting! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Phaseolus (BeanMan)
01-06-2006, 09:39 AM
Gator,

Just looked at the regs pamphlet, there is no mention of minimum arrow weight. It does say that broadheads must be at least 7/8" with two cutting edges and the blade must be in the same plane for the entire length of blade.

Cheers,

Guys Steve is a hoot to have around camp. He came and spent a week guiding handicapped hunters with me in early December. I am planning on returning the favor by guiding some of the same group on a speedgoat hunt with him. I am looking foreward to this trip. I have a few elk under my belt and must say they are second only to axis deer as far as table fare goes. I will be leaving for this hunt from Eastern Nebraska. I have room for 2-3 hunters or atendees I should say to ride along. I have a new 2005 chevy 3/4 ton crew cab. I will also be taking two horses in a 16 foot trailor, so there will be ample room for everyones stuff. Both can be used a saddle horses but once something hits the ground I'm sure one will become a pack animal for the time being. I also own a pair of 14x16 wall tents with heaters and will have ample room for some folks to stay as long as those who do share in the work of setting them up an taking them down as well as keeping them orderly inside and cutting some fire wood. My passion lies in hunting western big game and steve is just the one you want along your first time out. We spoke in length about this on the phone last nite and I decided this would be a great hunt. I would also like to take a scouting trip into this area in july or august and anyone along the way is more than welcome to go or if someone from out that way wants to met up that too would be great. If you are planning on going and live near me or somewhere out east I would be glad to have you ride along. Even if you are coming from western SD or somewhere I could pick you up in southern wyoming. If your interested please let me know I really would like to find someone to ride along. Please send me a PM if this interests you.

Great Idea,

Bull elk tags for Unit 55 of Colorado’s 2nd rifle season, ( the dates of the proposed hunt) are over the counter and unlimited in number.

Not to rain on this parade, but if it is indeed unit 55, it has only a 10% success rate, 128 animals for 1285 hunters during the second rifle season.... that does not make it a "pretty good elk unit" in my book.
However, it looks to me like it may be Unit 481 not 55. 481 has a 40% success rate, but that is only 82 animals for 204 hunters. The down side is that 481 is a draw unit, for both cow and bull tags, as the OTC tags are not valid there according to the 2005 big game Brochure (http://wildlife.state.co.us/brochures/biggame/pdf/elk.pdf) , draw stats in the 2004 second season were 319 aplicants for 179 bull tags, 116 of those had at least one Preference point leaving only 63 tags for the other 203 hunters to draw from.
The draw stats were much more promising for Cow tags, however, with only 280 applicants for 246 tags in 2004. Of those only a handful had any Preference points.
(Note: The draw tag numbers and the harvest numbers don't add up because hunters drawing these tags had the option to use them in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th rifle seasons, while the harvest rates were for 2nd rifle season only.)

So, Unit 481 has a higher success rate for tagging out but fewer tags while Unit 55 guarantees you a tag (OTC) but much slimmer odds of filling it.

Or we could both be wrong about the unit # and just blowing smoke. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Steve, can you confirm what unit this would be in? The only Taylor Reservoir I can find on the CDOW map is rather far south of Gunnison. However, I found Buena Vista on the Eastern edge of unit 481, north east of Gunnison by about 25 miles.

I am not quite sure how this has gone on so long without me seeing it, but, now I have. So, put mine name down for the rifle time frame. May have to do some re-arranging of plans but will definately try to be there.

For those that are wondering about how everybody would get along, the hog hunt that was held a few years ago had 20 - 30 attendees and almost everybody got along great. And I believe everybody had a great time. If you have the chance and can, you should attend. You won't be dissappointed.

Reloader,

Try looking for Taylor Park Reservoir. It is north east of Gunnison and smack in the middle of unit 55. You have to cross the continental divide to get into 481. I agree that Steve should clarify to the camping and hunting site. I've fished
The Taylor River and Taylor Reservoir a bunch and it is some of the better fishing on the state. I've climbed all the 14,000 foot mountains around there too but never hunted that part of the state. I would expect odds to be better in draw only units.

A few pointers from a CO resident.

You WILL save time money gas time and aggravation by flying in to Springs instead of Denver. Tickets are more to go into springs but its not worth the hassle to go to Denver. Get a two stop or three stop rt ticket and it'll be as cheap as it gets. You need to get tickets at least two months before to save the money.

I did a lot of number crunching using 2004 statistics and unit 55 is great for mule deer and elk. NW Colo is better, but its 300 mi further and is full of ranches. Unit 55 should be mostly NF and BLM land. most other units in central and sou colo fare lots worse in kill numbers than unit 55.

If you guys that may come have specific questions pplease email me and Ill answer as well and stright as I can : svenska50@hotmail.com

A $500.00 round trip ticket from Burlington to Colorado Springs is pretty darn cheap, especially if it is non-stop. If you take into account the cost of flying a jet (it will burn $500.00 in jet fuel just getting off the ground) it is no wonder the airlines are all going bankrupt. It cost my wife and I $2,300.00 for round trip tickets from Montana to New Jersey for my mom's funeral last September and these were discounted internet purchases, although they were purchased on short notice (the airline did not do discounts for a death in the family). It should be a great time for all on this hunt, so, just do it.

To live in Durango means a 10k salary cut for me and a 16k salary cut for my wife, also my 200k home here near the shores of Pueblo State Park would cost over 600k in Durango. I can buy a lot of gas for those differences in salary and overpriced unreal estate. I dont mind the trip. I see lots of elk and mule deer, sometimes by the hundreds. THAT makes it all worthwhile.

Hope to see you all in unit 55, or where ever you pick for the ADVENTURE. Incidentally unit 55 had near 600 elk killed in 2004, not 128. 2005 numbers not in. Oh by the way, "Hunter kill" ratio means nothing, its total kill that shows herd population.

There is no additional license required, just an elk tag. I just reread the regs, it says saboted bullets are illegal during muzzleloading season and so are scopes but it doesn't mention using them during the regular rifle season. I'll call them tomorrow and ask for clarification.

[/ QUOTE ]

The initial paragraph (II) is the universal regulations for use of ML rifles or muskets during any season. The following (A, and B and subsequent numbered) paragraphs specify they are only regulating the ML seasons. This means the the first paragraph limiting the calibre and bulet weight used is the only paragraph relevant to the regular rifle season use of ML rifles. So if you want to use a .50 cal Savage 10ML-2, with modern smokless powder, 209M ignition and 170+ gr sabot bulets, topped with a 4-20x50 tactical scope...you can! Not sure why you would want that scope on any ML but you could use it if you so choose!?! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Nothing definite yet for my plans but I am still interested in coming I may just fish or I may bring a rifle or 2...can't decide yet. Either way it sounds like a Blast! Nice pics bean man...they sure spice up the interest even more!

Good digging James!

Why not have a 4-20x50 on a ML? It sounds logical to me. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Actually 3 of my ML guns wear 4-16x44 scopes.

Anyone from Iowa, Nebraska or other points east. I am going to and would be interested in meeting in Omaha or somewhere and riding out together. I might pass on the hunting as I will be elk and deer hunting a week before but am planning to attend just to hang out. Like I said before I have 2 14x16 wall tents with stoves and horses I am willing to bring if anyone is interested in packing a little less.

As much as I would love to take an elk with my bow...I feel my odds are much better with a rifle. Besides...not sure on the laws...but here you can hunt with your bow during rifle season if you choose. If thats the same in CO...then the folks who wanted to hunt with a bow, still could during the rifle season!

RE: Hunt Location for RealTree Archery

QUESTIONS

1. Based on last year, how was the harvest in GMU 55 for archery season and rifle seasons? I know that the weather plays a part in this, but would you recommend one season over another?

2. Do you think this is a good spot for him and his group? Or as good as any other spot?

3. If yes, I’m assuming the campgrounds in the Gunnison National Forest are available during hunting season?

4. If this isn’t a good spot, do you have other suggestions?

ANSWERS

1 - Harvest fluctuates a lot in the Taylor area. This past year, archery was fair to slow, first season was a boon, second and third poor, and usually by forth, all the critters have moved out of the park. This could happen during third season depending on the weather. As far as one season over the other, it depends if you like archery or rifle hunting. 2nd season would probably be preferable over third season however, due to weather.

2&3 - Probably at least as good as any spot. There are plenty of camp spots that could accommodate a group this size. I think the campgrounds (Dorchester and Dinner Station) are still open during the rifle seasons, but I’m not positive. However, there is plenty of suitable dispersed camping sites in the area.
4 - For a potentially large group, Taylor Park would provide the bested, easiest access to a good location where there (under normal conditions) ought to be good opportunity to harvest an animal.

The peak of the elk mating is the 1st week in October per the last DOW meeting I went to about a year ago. That's why there the achery season closes in late September & the 1st rifle season is the 2nd weekend in October. Mule deer rut starts about the 1st week of November & really gets going around Thanksgiving.

Just remember this is an open unit----This means shoot the 1st legal bull you see. I know everyone has seen videos of big bulls-----330 to 360 class bulls. Colorado has them but there are in draw units. The photos that Beanman has posted are the type bulls you should be getting into.

Something else I thought of, for you all who will be buying or applying for your tags online: HAVE ALL YOUR INFO IN FRONT OF YOU "BEFORE" YOU BEGIN. The online apply does 'time out' and if you goof around looking stuff up to fill in the blanks then you'll have to start over...allthe way over. Make sure ythat you have your four choices selected ahead of time too as theres not time to be looking stuff up and thinkin bout waht you wanna do for tags and draws once you start the application process. In 2003 I timed out twice and it took me two hours just to apply for one set of tags. Tjhe second set took 15min cause I had it all figgered out by then.

And dont forget your hunter safety info. If you don't have a recod of it your state DOW or DNR surely does. Or retake the course, yalls might learn somethin. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know that this is still 8 months away but if there are deadlines that have to be met or applications for these tags that have to be submitted then I would think that that info. is pretty critical.

Help??? http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Huntin Girl,
True the Bull Elk tags are OTC. However if you have never hunted Colorado before you will have to contact the DOW and get a Conservation Certificate number or CC#. This CC# will the be your "identity" to Colorado DOW. You use that number everytime you apply for a tag or buy licenses. The certificate itself becomes your license when you get the tag. There are 7 or 8 spaces on the back of the certificate for you to put the sticker for the tag that you have. When a certificate is full you just request a new one. I hope this helps

For those of you who are going to be fishing, what kind of fishing is legal, that time of year ? Is it fly-fishing only, or can you use a spinning wheel, with bait, worms or spinning bait ?

Why in ythe world would a person want to stand in line to buy OTC tags when you can get them online??? Huntign season is short enough in CO without spending the preseason standing in line. I have stood in line, for two hours, wife has stood in line for three hours and still didnt get to head of the line. No we do it online, no waiting. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif The requirements are the same.

Buckee,
Fishing isn't dictated as much by time of year as location. Different stretches of water have different regulations. If I remember right they are called like gold, red, and blue ribbon water. Each designation has a different set of regulations. Some are fly only, some are spinning, catch and release, slot size limits, etc. Anyway it's more about where you fish and not when.

The CC ticket system is over and done. You will get an individual blue tri-fold tag/license for each species you buy a tag for. The long green CC tickets went out the window when the DOW went totally online. ALTHO some people still have them and do use the old CC numbers. We have them, the wife and I, and we use them but only to apply or to refewrnce in our emails to the DOW. Others do not get them and use their cyurrent DL or SS number, I think.

Silvertip,
When did they do away with the CC#. I had to have mine last year when I applied for my preference point. Plus how are they going to track points now they were being assigned to CC#'s. One other thing, you said totally online. Are they not sending out regulation and application books anymore?

The use what they call a CID number now same as CC but no long green card. Either number works.
You need one or the other to get a tag, and you can get the CID number online

Got ya, I've been applyijng for points since 2001 and not buying licenses. I really didn't pay attention but my CC# was changed to a different CID# when I finished my house and moved last time.
On another note, I read somewhere back in the thread that this was an unlimited unit and to shoot the first bull seen. Area 55 has the 4 point restriction on does it not?

Are the OTC licenses for a specific unit or for all unlimited units for that season? http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Unlimited only refers to the QUANTITY of licenses for a specific unit. An OTC unlim bull elk tag is for a specific unit only, like unit 55. Except there are OTC unlimited STATEWIDE archery elk tags and unlimited statewide turkey tags and some others similar. I know this is confusing but when you read the lead in pages for each species you need to read 'every word' to understand what it is you are buying or applying for.

EMail me if I can help, or better yet email the DOW, their answers will be correct and official. I wont steer you wrong, but sometimes I misunderstand too and I am a resident.

http://wildlife.state.co.us/About/askdow/

They usually answer in a few days.

Good luck guys.

TexasTrophies,

Over the Counter Bull Unlimited Licenses are good in any unit during 2nd and 3rd rifles EXCEPT for units which have no unlimited seasons. There is a list of them and an explanation on page 24 at the top of the middle column in this years big game pamphlet. Only Three Units touch 55 that you can't hunt in and two of those are south of the Gunnison river. which is a long way away. The other unit, 56, only touches 55 at a single point and you shouldn't have to worry about it.

You may hunt unit 55 and most of the surrounding units on your general license during 2nd and 3rd rifle. The RT hunt is 2nd rifle. You are good to go.

Sorry that there has been confusion,

UNLIMITED RIFLE ELK
There are antlered elk licenses for the 2nd and 3rd seasons only. They are valid in all units except ....... I read that as the license can be used in more than one unit, as long as the unit is not in the "excepted list".

Was thinking about maybe slipping over to 54 and giving it a try also, if 55 gets a little to crowded.

Don't know about the spinning rod question, Steve, but to get a non-res fishing license you have numerous test both written and physical to prove you know how to fish, where to fish, when to fish and what you are fishing for. In the physical test, you actually have to go out with a flyrod and catch 5 fish within 1 hour before you qualified to receive a non-resident fishing license.

Method of fishing varies according to what wter you are fishing. the Taylor River is fly's and lures only so yes you can use spinners, just not bait. Taylor park Reservoir is open to all methods including bait. It all depends on where you are fishing.

Taylor Park is a bit like a glacier cirque in that many streams feed in from the high country that rings the area. But mainly the Taylor River feeds out of it into Gunnison. There are other streams in the Park, Texas Creek, Spring Creek and some others. Google it up on GoogleEarth and you'll see what I mean. If you need a town name to look for use TINCUP to orient your map then back off to see how huge the Park is. Steve Beilgard has been to Texas Lakes soem time back abns suggests that as our camp site area, it is almost due east of Taylor Lake a few miles.

Also if you go to Google then click on Images then type in Taylor Park Colorado or Cottonwood PAss or Tincup or Pitkin you'll get to see some fotos of the places.

Elevations seem to vary between 8000 and 14000 feet dependin on how good your legs and lungs are.

A fishing tip------the browns will be on their beds in the fall. Here in the Animas, I take a silver rapala & pull it across the deep holes. They will come up & smack it---HARD. They are not feeding but getting it off their beds. I found the 6" one to be the best---3 treble hooks, Silver & black. Put a couple in your tackle box just incase. CB

Yup a silver and black Rapala Shad Rap 5R will slay them that time of year. especially on the Gunnison.

VTH,

I tried a lure that ratteld and it scared the trout right out of the water. I'd stick to the standard Shad Rap. I like the buoyancy idea though.

Mine is the original floating. I used to catch large-mouth bass with it---before I moved to Colorado. LOL--it's probably 35 years old. CB
