How did you guys do last year? I got one. Merriams are not as big as your easterns. Mine was 17 lbs. 3/4" spurs & about a 9" beard. The beard is real thin about the same diameter as a big pencil. CB

Hey guys, sorry it has taken me awhile to get here. This will be my first year turkey hunting. I am 21 years old and from Tennessee but go to school in Atlanta. I have always played baseball until this year which is why I havent turkey hunted. However, I plan on putting some time in this year. My mom and little brother are planning on coming to ATL this weekend for a 3d shoot, and I am going to have them take the 870 Super Mag Senthtic back to get a second bead put on. After that I should be ready to go, and I would say I will be in the woods 2 or 3 weekends over the month long season. Look foward to seeing how everyone does...

What's happening everyone. My name is Brad,32, from Michigan. Looks to me that we have a good team. I took a 24lb, 10 1/4" beard, 1 1/8" spur, and 7/8" spur Eastern last year. I went 3 for 6 last year, meaning 3 dead birds for 6 hunters. With 5 getting shots. And one of them, which would be my wife, missed twice. This year I took the late hunt because everyone I take out wants to hunt April., so I am hunting May 1 thru 31. I have some suggestions for names, how about:

Team Make Them Strut!
Cuttin and Struttin
Wingdraggers

rutnstruthunterB
03-11-2006, 09:39 PM
I haven't heard a gobble yet this spring. Its still preety early here. We need this warm weather to stick around and then they'll start gobbling. I 've been seeing some nice ones road scouting. As far as the name goes I like Tumblin' Toms. But I'm game for what ever you all decide.

ranchand99
03-12-2006, 08:20 PM
Tumblin' tom's....Tom thumpers...doesn't matter to me.I heard 3 more gobblers this morning, and saw 2 different birds today. It was 60 degrees this morning, and got up in the 80's.I might listen before work this week.

Colorado Bob

I've not done any scouting this weekend. We got about 2 foot of snow at my house. In the mtns probably closer to 3 to 4 feet. 1st good storm we have had this winter. I've hunted my buddy's ranch for the past 10 or 12 years. I know where they roost & which drainages they like to use. CB

Colorado Bob
03-23-2006, 05:18 PM
Ranchand99----I do that also, to be honest I would rather have her shoot than myself. I called one in last year for her-------he flew across a small river & landed about 5 yards in front of her !! CB

ranchand99
03-24-2006, 10:14 PM
Awesome! We're going for her 2nd bird.

My wife's first bird was a 2 year old.He did everything you would want him to...Twice!He ran 140yds down the trail(seriously right in to the decoy set up.Double gobbling, and gobbling at every peep I made.I could have shot him 30 times, but she was scared. She was begging me to stop him.Every time I clucked,he would look right at us,and gobble.Shaking his whole body.25yds away! Finally he realized he was the only one moving after I stopped calling. He picked his head up,and she hammered him.Just too perfect ya' know.It was a huge load off my chest. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif He had 1" spurs,9 1/2" beard, and weighed 18lbs,which is pretty heavy for a 2 year old around here.

We came close a few times last year, but it is so hard to find a babysitter. So,she didn't get to go regular. We did have a hen and a poult walk by on the opposite side of the road,in the first week of May,as she hid behind a pine, and I laid flat on my stomach.10ft away. She said that made her whole season.

She's been really pumped up this year..It's gonna be cold here in the morning, but I know a sunny place they love to hang out,and eat.I may have to use my woodsmanship skills to help her bag a bird tomorrow.

Good luck to all of you,and I'll check back in later.Oh,yeah we're going to be on public land so prey for us. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well I see you can't upgrade..well that was the last thing on my mind after hunting 8 days straight, getting up early, hunting all day, hunting public land, several close calls, and working this bird for 1 hour and 50 minutes...I earned him.Good luck to all of you.I hope my score helps.

I have to get this form printed on a friends computer, then I will add my pics.Good luck to you all!

congrats! I didnt get one on our opening day. We had one bird work a little, but being new at this we moved from where we first heard him down the hill, and called...he came right where we were the first time, and we tried to ease up to a spot where we could actually see to shoot, but bumped him. Ohh well we learned something. I will be at it again this next saturday. Same place we had about 4 birds goobleing there so hopefully we will at least get one in sight this time. Good luck to everyone!

I called in 3 longbeards Easter for me,and my friend.One 3 yr old,and two 2 yr olds.I waited for my friend to shoot first.He shot the strutter(3yr old),then I got one of the 2 yr olds.His bird weighed 15lb 12oz,9 9/16" beard,and had some sharp 1 1/8" spurs.Mine weighed 13lb 4oz,9" beard,7/8" and 15/16" spurs.It was fun.SO,I guess you guys are ready to go huh???I wonder why they haven't been posting scores.They are 2 weeks behind.Good luck to ya'll!

I called a 2 year old last weekend for a buddy of mine. 3/4" spurs, 9" beard ,17 lbs. This weekend called in 3 jakes & my wife shot one. That was her 5th gobbler. Those #4 Federals do the trick.

They are funny this year, they don't seem to like my box call-----had to use my mouth call more this year. Last couple of years they really sounded off on the box. Things change I guess. CB

Quick update...I havent been able to go the last few weeks, and hunting has been hard so far. After opening days bust, I went a couple weeks later. Had a bird on the way, but then a real hen cut him off in the bottom as he was on his way to the highline. Later in the morning we got a bird hot and gobbling...sat for 5 min yelped agian and he cut us off...got him to gobbel once more then I decided to be quiet. Waited 15 min nothing...yelped nothing...15 more min nothing. Dont know what happened or where he went. He was deffinately on the way. Anyways, next weekend is the close of the season, and I should get to go friday and saturday...will update on what happens.

Well,we're in 2nd now,but not down by much,a good 2 year old will do it.40 or more pts.Congrats to all.I finally tagged out with the bird I had been after since opening weekend (Mar 25th)Had to crawl almost 260yds to get a 55yd shot,

He looked to be going down hill.He was an old bird with a worn fan,his legs were drying out,and turning white. He weighed 16 lb 12oz,10 3/4" beard, had a 1 3/8" spur, and a broken 1" spur, also had an injured toe that was missing. The end of it was swollen up like a mini golf ball,a tough old bird, and my toughest to date.Too bad we can't upgrade. It's been nice talking to ya'll this spring, maybe we'll see each other in the deer contest.I'll check back, and see if we pull it off.

Here are a few pics.
