Well boys I got three areas to turkey hunt in, all with crazy turkey populations. This years looking good, and I'm definately looking to bag a stupid jake on opening day. I won't submit this one and after that I'll hunt nice toms for my second bird and hopefully I can make one of those happen for a submission.
AdvantageTimberLou

I have about 4 areas I can hunt with 2 different friends. One friend called last night and he is already seeing a flock of 15. We should be able to pattern these birds and the best deal is there is no hunting pressure. Hope to lay the smackdown on a Tom come May 1st!
I am only allowed 1 bird so I will try to be selective plus its fun to be out there in the woods. None the less, if I harvest one early I will still go out and call for my friends! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Good luck team!

Mossy--here is a quote on the rules.
4. Scoring of the bird will be based on the NWTF scoring system. Each member will be able to score one bird(the first bird taken for your season even if you are allowed more than one) for the Contest.
You have to submit the first bird you take. So if you shoot a jake on opening morning, according to the rules, that is the one you need to submit. Personally I'd try to take a mature Tom first and not waste a tag on a Jake until later in the season--but that's just me. You shoot whatever you want and best of luck this season.

Just like deer hunting, try to pass on the small ones at first to get a big one. If the season is nearing the end in your area by all means take a jake if you want to. Any bird taken is a major accomplishment, most of all be safe and have fun! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Say fellas, I'm getting a new turkey choke, I asked in the turkey forum and got some answers but I have another question. What do you guys think of Hevi Shot?
I've heard tons of stuff about the H.S. Strut Hevi Shot Undertaker choke tube combined with #5,6 Hevi Shot. Supposedly for some(and yes I know, keyword being "some") its the best combo they can get for their 12 gauges.
I know I have to try things out, but I also don't want to buy 1 million chokes! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Well guys I got my first refusal for a third place to turkey hunt...and this one ticks me off. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
I had a great aunt and uncle that I barely even knew but used to visit when I was 8-12 years old. Their property is chalk-loaded with turkey's and I know the land like the back of my hand. Anyways they died a couple years ago and for those two years the property was passed onto my dads second/third cousin, I'm not sure what he was. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Last year before my dads cousin put the property up for sale, he never took care of it and never visited it. Because of this, my grandma gave me permission to hunt it. Last year was an incredible year and I had like 15 CLOSE calls, plus I was bowhunting and a couple times I could have shot a bird if I didn't have my bow. So I call my dads cousin up and ask permission for this year, since he's now taken responsibility for it, he rudely says no, not even nice about it. I call his sister and she also rudely says no. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Obviously the worst thing happened.... my dads cousins are severe ANTI'S LOL! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
I had that whole place mapped out between creeks, fences, roosting areas and fields!!! What a shame I had to run into that luck. Still got two other places so I'm glad, anyways, just posting, keepin it going in here. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif : http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yeah, eager to get out there. I went patterning and scouting, also drove around for pretty much the whole day. I saw nothing on the one property but when driving on the way home, saw about 50-70 with two toms in the flock, just 1/4 mile down the road in a farmers harvested field. They were pretty close, so i pulled over and got out, they didn't like that so they began to all trot to the left, then kind of just settled down, picked at their wings and I tried yelping with my mouth. Two big red heads popped up and I noticed a beard on one.
Probably about 70-80 yards in the field, but very cool to see them so close to my property and got me PUMPED. No cam or binocs tho, guess I'll have to show you guys one of them after I LAY THE SMACKDOWN BEBEH!!! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well guys heres about half of the flock I'm hunting, sorry about the pic, you can barely see. I took this last week. Came down my road, saw half the flock in the cut field and the other half way back in the pines. There were four displaying or strutting by themselves further back, I could'nt get a clear picture of them.
http://www.realtree.com/img/508/medium/000_2361.JPG
Tomorrow I'm going out to my cousins property to take a walk with him and scout it out. They have about twenty on average walk through their backyard every single morning, gobbling and clucking so loud you can hear it in the house sometimes they said. Anyways, my cousin tells me shes found the roosting tree not too far back, about ten acres behind their house. Two jakes and two toms, the pic I showed before must not have had the two toms, or you just couldn't see them.

8 1/2 beard, 1 inch spurs weighed 21 pounds!

guys--haven't been much help this year---don't really know what is up???? Went out yesterday morning and called up a Jake--only had about 3 inches of a beard but was still pretty good size bird. Decided to let him walk. Heard a few more gobbles but they just wouldn't work for me. Went out last weekend for an afternoon hunt with my daughter. With about 30 minutes of light left we finally started working a group but I ended up calling in the neighbors dog and there went the birds. Going to try again this wednesday.

I was calling for my dad this morning by the way. We set up 150 yds away from one start calling around 6:00 and he's just gobbling his head off, we hear him fly down and he won't gobble. We call and call for an hour and he never showed up. The rest of gobblers shut up after 6:15 too. I heard 1 other gobble all morning we were out. I thought for sure we'd have one come in...

Seen a Tom and a bunch of hens out in a field about 300 yards from the land we hunt on. He was not going to come our way though, he was content with what he had.
Yesterday seen a hen all by herself. We think she has a nest nearby. Was really warm, glad I had my leafy suit on!! Mosquitoes were bad though, never seen them this bad this early in May! Warmest spring we have had in years!!
Will be going out this week after work. Hoping for better results!

Still gunning boys! Going to get out as much as I can this week, I haven't heard one gobble all season, talked to some guys at the hunting/fishing store here in Ontario, nobodies been hearing gobbles until just a few days ago, must be the weather...its hard to stay motivated!!!
However, my buddy and I have tracked the turkeys so that we know where they go every morning and night, and we have had about 4 close calls, including him missing at 15 feet! Since every single bird came in silent, we were either caught completely off gaurd, or got up to move and they would be around the corner about 60-80 yards, and take off.
They should be starting to gobble now, I haven't been out for about 4 days.
P.S. Last week we got to our field and their was already a hen that i could see feeding through the bushes, about 50 yards. We waited until she fed over to a point sticking out in the field, and i quickly crawled out and set up a decoy, on ym way back, between the fields edge and the decoy, SHE POPS OUT. I was frozen on my hands and knees looking back, while my buddy held our guns, sitting on one knee at the edge. I slowly layed down on my belly within a period of 5 mins, and she walked by me at 25 feet, just feeding, I LAYED IN THE MUD FOR 45 MINS LOL!!!!

I went to (4) different spots on Saturday, no gobbling at all!! Seen lots of deer that were just wandering through the woods not know I was there. Seen a nice buck bed down about 75 yards away, he was sunning himself. It was near my deer stand so I got away from that area.
Birds have moved to some higher ground as our woods is pretty wet right now. Going to try a different county tonight, birds have been spotted out there just when I am at work!!
Good luck team!! Maybe we should send out a search party for Todd! LOL!! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Got till Wednesday...the only birds on the property I'm hunting are roosted and fly down in a guys backyard EVERYDAY. RIGHT on the property line, can't seem to bring the two of them out, the line is surrounded by a huge creek and a barrier of thick trees. Really starting to tick me off, this guys an anti too.

Looks that way Ryan, my season ended yesterday, heard some hens then heard then fly up to the roost, no gobbles to be heard the past 4 times out. Weather this spring has been weird to say the least, warm in the beginning, then it rained for about 10 days, mosquitoes would carry you out of the woods, and yesterday I hunted them in tornado conditions in my area. Was probably the worse season to date but like any season there always is next year.
Sorry I let the team down, tried but couldn't close the deal! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Hope others had more success than me!

Thanks Ryan,
The next day after season, I had 2 hens and a Jake in my backyard, 10 yards from my front porch. I seen them coming across a field towards my house because a drainage ditch is on the one side and they were too lazy to cross it. So they follow the side of the ditch, I put out a decoy in my front yard and continued to watch them work there way up that ditchline in the back of my house. I got out my box call and I had the jake all fired up and looking for that hen to add to his herim (sp?)
I got that jake 10 yards from my porch, if only he was bigger and the biggest thing, if only yesterday as on this day the season was 1 day over! Man, its like turkeys know when its safe to come out!! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif It did make me laugh though as I went hunting all over in my area while I should have just stayed home!! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif LOL!
