Our season starts April 6th here in Oklahoma.
When does your seasons start?

billkay
02-28-2006, 08:41 AM
I think our home season in Indiana begins on the 26th of Apr. I'm alos hunting in Iowa, 4th season muzzleloader, Kentucky, which begins on Apr 15th, I think, and possibly a father/son hunt in Illinois.

Sounds great to me. Thanks for the idea and the effort.

Just to let you guys know. I hunt easterns in northeast Iowa. Our season begins on April 10th and goes for 5-6 weeks.

I hunt them with a BOW. I like the challenge.

I was on the first winning team when this contest started 2-3 years ago.

Good luck to all and HUNT SAFE!!!!!

Well everyone, I am slowly putting my new turkey gun together. I bought the Winchester 1300 in 20 ga. The other day I bought some Rem. Hevi Shot magnums in size 5. Now I just need to by some tru-glo sights for it and some targets and start patterning it. I might also have to buy a tighter choke if the factory full that I have isn't suitable. This will greatly increase my shooting range from last year because all I was using was a single shot Pardner in 12 ga. with a modified choke. So hopefully I can pull a turkey into what ever range my gun will shoot this year.

maddhunter
03-06-2006, 09:02 PM
Squirrellbuster, I have been patterning my son's 870 express 20ga and I have found the factory full choke to throw a heck of a pattern at 30 yrds and decent at 40yrds with the Rem. Hevi in #5s.
There's no doubt in my mind that if a bird gets within 40yrds he's gonna be dead http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
It's carrying a good wide but solid pattern.

jgbennett6
03-07-2006, 09:10 AM
i have found that factory chokes work best for me. I shoot winchester silver 3 1/2" #5's out of my benelli nova. I patterned it last month at 60 paces i had 13 pellets in the kill zone.

billkay
03-07-2006, 04:54 PM
I've forwarded the addies to Renzos. They should ship pretty quick.

fantastic. thanks billkay..... so squirrelbuster what county you gonna be getting your gobbler in?

Squirrelbuster
03-09-2006, 07:47 PM
I finally picked up tru-glo sights for my gun, but I forgot to pick up some targets, so once I get them i will be able to sight in my gun and see how it patterns.

Hey jgbennett6, hopefully I will be getting a turkey in either Chenango county or Tioga county. The turkey hunting is better over in Chenango though so if I get one that will probably be where I get it. Of course all i hunt in Chenango is public property so that always makes it more challenging.

billkay
03-09-2006, 08:51 PM

No fear squirrell! You'll do just fine.

maddhunter
03-10-2006, 10:31 PM
You'll get one Squirell, heck it took me 4 years before I bagged my first. After being beaten up by the boss toms I took the first bird that came in range which ended up being a jake, but I am just as proud of that jake as any other turkey I will have taken.

maddhunter
03-10-2006, 10:36 PM
Finally I will get to get out in the woods to do some much needed scouting. My mother-in-law is getting re-married tomarrow, so after Sat. it's in the woods we go!!!!!!
The kids are on spring break and I'm on the night shift so me and my son will be heading out to the woods all day sunday and monday morning. I'll let ya'll know how it goes.
Good luck to everyone and don't forget to take a good pic for the contest http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I dropped by a place that I hunt infrequently at best. It's about 40 acres of hardwoods next to a plot of WPA pines. Every time I'm there to deer hunt, all I see is turkey. When I turket hunt there, I get covered up in deer. Saw some deer during my walk, suprise, suprise, but no sign of turkey. In Indiana we have to get in a lottery to hunt public land. I'm in for the drawing, but last year was the first time in years that I drew in. I'm hoping my best chances will be in Kentucky on their opening weekend or the first weekend of the 4th season in Iowa. I think we're hunting Tony Knight's land. Supposed to be some BIG ol toms there! I'm pumped.

Got out yesterday and this morning. No gobbling in NE OK yet http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Didn'y see a turkey one either. Seen some good sighn but not as much as the years before. I know they are in there, just can't pinpoint them just yet. We've had alot of storms moving through and that may have them bunched up in the canyons and draws.
We'll be getting out this friday and every weekend until season, til we find our opening spot.

maddhunter
03-19-2006, 07:50 PM
Got out to do some scouting again this weekend(3-18-06) Rained off and on all weekend, temps stayed below 60. Saw alot more sighn and even a few turkeys. Still not gobbling yet. No gobbling could be a good sighn though, with season still 18 days away.

Here's a portion of an e-mail and pix that Renzo sent me tonite. Pretty cool stuff.

Sunday morning I met my dad at the MVWMA and we went into the area I had previously scouted. We positioned decoys in front of us and had a clearing to our left and right where the turkeys could see our decoys. Directly in front of us and behind us the brush was too thick for a turkey to enter (or anything else for that matter).

At about 9:00 am the sun was shining, there was no wind and we were both about half asleep. My dad and I were sitting against a tree shoulder to shoulder and to my left I caught some movement. When I cautiously turned to see the movement (5š away) I was looking a mountain lionšs ear. At the exact instant I turned, the cat leaped out of the bushes (10-12 feet) and then leaped one more time (10-12 feet) onto two hen turkey decoys. I couldnšt move or even say anything as I was trying to grasp what was happening in front of me. My dad grabbed the shotgun, fired in the catšs direction and missed. Instantly, the lion turned and ran directly at us. I braced myself and leaned back (I thought we were going to get our @ss kicked) as my dad shot again-this time at point blank range. The mountain lion fell.

Holy $*&amp;^%$##@ what just happened? We both stood there in shock for the next few minutes trying to gather our senses. It was amazing to both of us that this cat came through, across and over dry leaves, limbs, branches and never made a single noise! I will never know how long he was standing 5 feet from my face before his ear twitched; furthermore, how many times have cats observed us without us knowing?

If you know anything about shotgun patterns, the hole in the mountain lionšs neck was about the size of a quarter-way to close for comfort. A normal shotgun pattern at 10 yards is basketball size.

This cat is 125 pounds with nothing in his stomach and 6š10˛ long! As luck would have it, my dad had a lion tag that is now filled and I still have an unfilled turkey tagŠ.

Well boys it's almost here. Thursday is the big day and I haven't slept in 3 days. I've been through all my gear I don't know how many times, just to make sure I don't forget that one thing I need at krunch time.
I've got one more day(10hrs) of work, soccer practice and then get the kids in bed and wait, wait, wait, wait, and wait for that alarm to go off. Which I have never been able to get that far before getting up http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I'm going to wait for a good tom.
At least I say I'm going to, when them boys are strutting and gobbling at 30-40yrds it's gonna be hard to keep from pulling that trigger on the first one that closes the distance. We have 30 days and can hunt all day every day and I have plenty of vacation days set aside.
Good luck to all of ya and be careful!!!!!! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Well first I have to apologize, I couldn't hold my trigger finger and I shot a 16# jake, 4inch beard.
But man was it an awesome morning. Had 5 birds gobbling thier heads off. This jake came in full strut and gobbling like a big boy, I thought for sure he was a bigger tom but I'm proud of him anyhow.
Those birds had me so fired up I just lost all focus, like I said before it's sure hard to let them go when they're gobbling at 30yrds!!! Can't wait to get back out there with my son in the morning.
I am pumped guys!!!!!!!! Again sorry for the small bird http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm takeing my son in the morning to try and get him one and I'll be sure to take the camera with me in my backpack and get a pic with the decs.
His bird will most likely be bigger than mine anyhow http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

First of all <font color="red">"any turkey is a trophy" </font> don't need to apologize for shooting a jake! Don't take the "contest" too seriously <font color="blue"> it's all about FUN!!!!! </font>

Glad that you had a great hunt this spring. If you have a chance for a second bird go for it and try for a bigger one this time (even if it not for the contest). Remember this sport of hunting is all about fun and having a great time in the outdoors.

I went out Friday for the first time and had seven birds at 20 yards or less. Only one offered a shot and I shot over his back on only took off feathers. For complete story see:

Leaving in the morning for eastern KY. We'll be near Winchester for a couple of days and then off to West Liberty. When I return on Tues, I'll spend a couple of days filminf some other hunters in Indiana, and then possibly ead to Owensboro KY on Fri for a few more days. I'll work the first couple of days next week and then head to Iowa to hunt with the guys from Knight Rifles. If I can't kill a bird in the next 2 weeks, I quit! LOL Good luck everyone.

I'm still hunting. Got on some good birds friday morning but didn't take one, they were out there on the edge of my range and didn't want to chance it, later stepped it off and it was about 20yrds farther than I thought http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Went out this morning where I shot my bird on opening day and busted a hen off her nest at 9:00am.
Looks like we don't have much time left for calling here in OK. Going have to ambush them I guess. But that shouldn't be to hard seeing how there isn't much water around.

Iowa bird down!

Well guys to make a long story short: 2004 - 2 bow birds, 2005 - no bow birds/ bad luck, 2006 - missed one at 20 yards with the bow. Been seeing birds, however, no good shots. Getting frustrated and went out today and bought a gun license at 3 PM. Went to a secret spot tonight at 4 PM that I had not yet hunted with the bow. Hen came by and came as close as 3 yards at 4:20 PM. <font color="red"> That hen was the neatest part of the whole hunt. </font> To have her checking me over at 3 yards was incredible. She was preening and fluffing her feathers while at this distance. Took all I had to keep from laughing. 5:15 turkey gobbles 500 yards away in the woods. I call a few times and he comes out of the woods at 400 yards. Nothing between me and him but 400 yards of freshly planted cornfield. A few calls and he starts that "TROT" towards me and my decoys. I love it when they run into you with that beard swaying back and forth. I let him get to 25 yards and as he is checking over my decoys I down him with the 12 gauge over and under. 2 3/4 inch #4's are plenty for turkeys if you make a head/neck shot!!!

It is not a bow bird, however, it was a really fun hunt. I will try to fill the bow tag with the remaining 2 1/2 weeks of the season

Stats: 21.8 lbs / 10 inch beard / 7/8 inch spurs. On the smaller size for an Iowa bird, however, a keeper and he will taste good (smoked). I will post in the coming days in the contest.

Congratulations man!!!!!!!
I think I'm going out with the bow today. It's going to be raining most of the day so I think I'm taking the doghouse blind and setting up on the edge of a pasture try to get some luck my way.
The hens are nesting here so I think I'll put out every decoy I got, 6 hens, one strutting tom(montanna decoy), backside tom(Renzos), and 2 jakes(1 Renzos, 1 featherflex).

Got my Iowa bird! Scored the first morning on a really nice bird. Weighed 22.5 pounds. 10.25 beard, and 1-1/8 spurs. I'll post some pix tomorrow.

Congrats!!!! We now have four birds to qualify for the contest!!!!

Billkay, nice size bird!!!!

Where are are other 3-4 hunters??? How about an update from you other guys!!! Love to hear how your season is going. I am still trying with the bow. Had a turkey fly away with my arrow last week. I could not find him after looking for 1 1/2 hours in the woods. Very sad situation. Still have one week to bow hunt. These birds are getting very smart. They just look at the decoys and stroll on by. I had a "MONSTER", I would guess close to 26 pounds last Sunday night at 25 yards, however, he offered no shot. Boy would I love to take him.

Good luck to all

I was told to go and score the bird at NWTF and also to check it's ranking. Talk about a suprise!
#18 overall in the US with a muzzleloader
#2 overall in Iowa with a muzzleloader, and
#1 Typical in Iowa with a muzzleloader!
Overall is both typical and atypical.

Thanks dog. I ran the scores for the birds that have been killed, but not posted yet and I get 211.0625. That would put us in 1st place by about 35 points. JG, I have yours at 58.1875 Dog, I have yours at 59.25.

Went out this morning to where a bird was roosted. A tom and three jakes came to within 50 yards, however, stalled because of a hen. I thought that this might be my bow bird chance.

Had another hen come in 5 minutes before that and stopped within 5 feet of the blind. It was the coolest thing: I have only had this happen once before in that she "scolded" my decoys!! She just wouldn't shut up. She was so upset that those decoys were there. I heard some real good "cuttin" from a hen at close range. I got it on tape. Sure wish I knew how to get it on the internet.

Good luck to all

To make a long story short, I haven't been having much luck. The first day my brother missed a bird and since then I have had birds answering all around me and I just can't get them to come in. At one point me and my friend were working a bird and we tried to move closer, but we got too close and the thing birst into flight. I am sorry to say that I might not be getting out this weekend because it is supposed to be raining, and next week marks the opener of bowfishing season so I will be doing alot of that. I am not sure if I will be able to get back out turkey hunting. So sorry I couldn't help out the team, and good luck to everyone still hunting.

Hey squirrell, a good season is measured in the fun, excitement, and time spent in the woods with friends and family. If you enjoyed yourself, that's all that counts. I sent a PM to MM.

I sent a PM to Marathon Man. Here was his reply. I asked him to stop in here and say hey sometime.

From: MarathonMan

Oh, man! Sorry I hadn't got back to you! I only had 3 days to hunt this time around, but I had A LOT of action, but I missed a real STUD of a tom! Probably had every bit of a 10 inch beard. He skirted my dekes and was about 10 yards farther than I would've liked, but when he realized the dekes were'nt real he started puckin' and I had to take a shot. I was only usin' a full choke and he was probably 40 yds out. I left my Undertaker in my other truck, and my dad drove it to work that morning. I probably should've waited, but it was comin' down to zero hour for me since we can only hunt till 1 here in IL!

Just take a photo of it signed.

Your bird should give a respectable 2nd or 3rd place finish.

It was great to get to know all you folks and I hope that you all had a great season.

Good luck to all
