Looks like we have a pretty good team here. Should be able to put up some decent numbers for this thing.

Let's get together and get a name figured out. Post some suggestions and then we'll vote.

Thundering Gobblers
BeardBusters
SpringFever
DawnPatrol
RealtreeRopers

I'm sure y'all can come up with some better ones, lol.

Just thought I'd check in while the coffe is brewing. I recognize some turkey slayers in this group. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'll think about some names after I have a cup of coffee or 2.

OK....after a few cups of coffee, about the only catchy names I can think of to add to Josh's list is ..... Flipum & Grillum and Master Smackers. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Should be an excellent year for us here. The winter has been so mild that the birds haven't suffered at all, and coyotes haven't been after them or the deer at all.

I'll be guiding a few clients but most of the season is mine, and I can't wait to get after them.

If I catch the big one ThunderStruting (Struting and gobbling at the same time) in front of me, I'll see if he can hold a Goldtip, lol.

Went to listen this morning, heard one bird gobble one time. He's an ole boy that we left last year, still hangin' in the same place.Checked a farm on the way home to see 2 NICE longbeards are calling the pastures home. Things are starting to shape up a little.

Sorry for the length but here's my weekend scouting report. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We finally had a weekend without rain. It's rained the past 3 weekends. Friday afternoon I saw 1 mature gobbler, 3 jakes, and a flock of hens so I went to try to pattern the gobbler coming off his roost Saturday morning. He wasn't very cooperative. He only gobbled once and that was right after he flew down off the roost. He's probably one of those old devil birds. Two other birds were gobbling pretty good so I kept my distance and listened to their travel pattern (from their gobbling) until they shut down. They were traveling together after meeting up shortly after flydown so I have a fix on the pattern they used for the first 30 minutes after they came off the roost Saturday.

After those birds quit gobbling I took off to where I had heard another gobbler in the distance while patterning the other 2 birds. I got close to where I thought I heard him last so I waited to hear if he'd tip me off with a gobble and let me know where he was. Another bird gobbled a couple of times in the distance and I'm familiar with where he was. I’ll check him out another time. Anyway, a minute or so later, I heard a hen yelping. She sounded more like a broken box call than a real hen. In the distance I could see a small part of a small food plot between 2 trees through the woods. I saw some movement through that narrow gap that looked like it might be a turkey. It couldn’t be the hen I was hearing because she was off to the right. I didn't want to risk busting whatever it was so I crawled another 50 yards to get behind a big tree where I could ease up behind it and see more of that small food plot through the woods. As I eased up I could see 2 mature birds in full strut in the food plot. A third bird strutted into view a few seconds later. I could still only see small parts of this food plot but 3 mature gobblers in full strut drumming loud was plenty to fire me up. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Like I said, all the gobblers had full fans but the furthest gobbler was noticeably bigger than the other 2. Sure made me wonder if the biggest gobbler was the devil bird that made a dummy out of me that I hunted around there about 4 or 5 times last year. I threw the towel in trying to hunt him last year to go for easier prey. I watched them for a few minutes until the hen I heard appeared. She took the gobblers behind a thick brushy area between me and the food plot so I took advantage of that opportunity to leave the area without spooking the birds. Unless I find something more promising, I'll be hunting these birds come opening day. Hopefully get some payback for last year too. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This morning I went to listen to another area where I killed 3 gobblers last year. This area is where I saw the jakes and hens Friday afternoon. I didn't hear any birds gobble on our property but it was a little windy and overcast this morning. It also didn't help for 3 guys to drive a truck in there to get 2 metal ladder stands within the last 2 hours before dark Saturday afternoon. One of the guys even commented on how much clanging and banging noise they made coming out of there Saturday afternoon. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif The only birds I heard gobbling were on the neighbor's property. Figures. I did see a couple of big mature gobblers while driving my cart on my way out of there but it was in an area I won't have access to hunt until the 2nd half of April.

A couple more preseason scouting trips and I think I’ll be ready for the March 15th opener.

Heard 6 gobblers this morning. 4 were in the area where I didn't hear a single bird last Sunday and the other 2 were on the neighbors property.

The weather forecast looks pretty good for this coming Wednesday which is our opening day. Thursday morning looks pretty good too. Both days it's supposed to be clear with lows in the mid 40's and high's in the upper 60's. I'm planning to hunt both of those 2 mornings.

I'll play guide for my son next weekend. Could be ruff hunting next weekend though. Mostly cloudy and windy on Saturday with rain moving in Saturday night. Overcast with a chance of rain on Sunday. Who knows at this point though. I don't really trust a weather man past a few days this time of the year.

Season opens tomorrow morning and the weather looks great for the opener. My son is back from college for spring break and he's fired up about turkey hunting this year. He's going with me in the morning. If one bird comes in he'll do the shooting. If 2 or more come in we're going to try to get a double. It's not uncommon at all to have more than one gobbler traveling together this time of year. We're going to go to an area where I saw 3 birds strutting together within 30 minutes of fly down time on the morning of March 4th. I'll fill y'all in after the hunt.

Followed your instructions Josh but we only got one on this trip. Great hunt though. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Complete story in the turkey hunting room with pic.

My son was the designated shooter if only one gobbler showed himself. It was almost 2 birds though. One trailing gobbler got hung up behind an obstruction and shut up. We didn't know what happened to him so my son opened the season in fine fashion by slamming the bird in hand down. His gobbler weighed 19lb. 3oz., sported a 9 3/4" beard and 1 1/16" spurs.

Looks like rain tomorrow so I'll catch up on sleep and give the birds a day off.

My son left for a 3 day spring break trip this afternoon so I'm heading back to camp tomorrow night to try to do some more damage to the turkey population from Friday through Sunday morning. I'm just gettin warmed up teammates. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yep VT...so far, so good. I'm heading out again. I'll check in Sunday when I get back home.

Looks like I'll get to do a little bass fishing between turkey hunts too. Got an invite to fish a private lake where I caught a 10lb. 6oz. hog of a fish last spring. Caught 2 other bass that same day over 6lbs. too. Quite a few more eating size bass found their way into the ice chest. The big fish were catch and release after recording weight and taking pics were finished. Should be a fun filled long weekend.

Having fun and enjoying life is a tuff job but somebody's got to do it. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm back a little earlier than planned. The rain moved in this morning around 7:30 and we're socked in with it through tomorrow.

The good news is I killed a gobbler for the team yesterday morning. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I had to work pretty hard for this one. Got on him around 7:00 in the morning and killed him a 9:10. It was a fantasic hunt! During the hunt I saw a total of 3 mature gobblers, 3 jakes, and 14 hens. My gobber has a 9 1/2" beard left (thanks to part of my shot pattern busting it up), both spurs measure 1 1/4", but he was sort of a light weight for a mature bird with those kind of hooks. He weighed in a 17 lbs., 10 oz. I'll post the story in the turkey room and post the required pics, etc. when I get the story typed up and the pics downloaded. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Bird had 8 13/16 inch beard, 1 1/16 and 15/16 inch spurs and weighted in at 14 lbs of blackwinged longlegged Osceola on digital scales (they were Huntn4bucks, i think he tweeked'em b/c it sure felt like more after the 4 mile hike out!)

I was humbled this past weekend. I left my shotgun and picked up the video camera instead. I tried to video a friend's hunt but the birds didn't cooperate like that have been for me.

We had a great gobbling and drumming show put on for us Saturday morning but that old bird sure didn't want to walk out for the video camera. We could hear this old bird drumming from about 100 yards. He'd occasionally gobble to give us a fix on his position that let us know he was hung up.

Sunday morning we had the same gobbler put a move on us and never saw him. He gobbled more than Saturday but never would come in. We were surprised by 5 jakes that silently came in and suddenly appeard from our right about 20 yards away but I couldn't move to capture them on video. They didn't hang around either. Must have have been something about the big lumps at the base of the 2 trees.

I had a lot of fun in Texas with lots of feathers flying. Doesn't get much better than that! Never been in a situation before where I felt like I needed to pass 2 year old birds in search of older gobblers. I'll definately be heading back there again next spring. That was way too much fun. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The New York Season also opens on May 1st and I will be in Virginia the first weekend. I think I will be trying to get out before work a couple of day so I do not go crazy. I do not think I can wait until the second weekend (5/13).

Good luck Josh and ny_gun. Both of you ought to be chomping at the bit by now from sitting on the sidlines while the rest of us have been smacking turkeys. Hope your 1st birds are some of those big fat long bearded Toms.

I went out quick this morning before work. Unfortunately I did not hear or see anything. I think I will try again on Wednesday.

In the above post i mentioned a pair of birds coming in last sunday and only one bird dying. . . well, heres the other one. My dads first bird of the season, he was beginning to get worried.

Just a little later in the day, he got another one after it flew across a river 112yards wide.

So his "dry" season took a turn for the best very quickly! http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Took my boy out for his first ever turkey hunt, and his first hunt at all since he got his license......I called in a bunch of birds and a huge jake came in to 7 yards. Dakota was a bit too excited and missed just left, lol. It was a great experience.

Sorry about Dakota missing his 1st bird but sure glad he had an exciting hunt for the 1st hunt he's ever been on. Not many people can say they got a shot on the first hunt. Hope he gets another crack at a turkey soon.

Read the story about your dad's hunt in the turkey room Cove. Great show! Glad it finally all came together for him.

I still have then going bonkers on my land, but getting them to close that last bit of distance is the tough part.........I'll be out there tomorrow, and sunday morning, working them hard.

I haven't been able to get out this season. A friend of mine found some HATCHED turkey eggs on the land he hunts so they're done for this year. Maybe next year. Our season ends tomorrow.

Sorry fellas......I did all I could but the closest I came was shaving that big gobbler's back when he gobbled and dropped his body just below the arrow.

I gave it my best, and the birds won this year, but boy was that one fun season.

Sorry guys... No luck this year... We saw a few good Toms we just could not get them to cooperate. Most of the time we would see them out rolling in the freshly turned soil after dinner and the NY season only goes till noon. Hopefully next year...
