View Full Version : Scope Or Open Sights?

What's The Better Option? I'm shooting Open Sights, TruGlo, But can't help but wonder what benefits the Scope offers. I always thought of Scopes as "enclosed", and not being able to see everything going on around you, but I've also never shot with one.
So What You Think? http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I put a red dot on my gun 2 seasons ago & have loved it. It does "enclose" your field of view, but I feel like that just makes me focus more on my point of aim. However, i would recommend not getting a scope or red dot that has magnification over 2X. Just suppose you are hunting a field bird with a magnifying scope...at 70 yards he looks real close when you are able to zoom in on him. Don't want anything to cause us to take a shot beyond our effective range.

I prefer adjustable fiber optic sights and I don't like red dot scopes at all.

I like my Tru-Glo sights personally.

I currently use Tru-Glo adjustable fiber optic sights on my turkey gun. Reason being it was the cheapest solution that gets the job done. I had no valid reason to upgrade to something more expensive, yet. It doesn't give me that much of an advantage to warrent the extra $100+.

I've tried a few red dot scopes and didn't care for them. I had a hard time focusing with them in some lighting situations. If I was to get a dot scope it wouldn't be a red dot, but a red/green dot one. Bushnell makes an examples of these kind of scopes. They allow you to switch to green or red dots depending on the lighting condition you're in preventing the whole losing your dot problems I was having with the plain red dots in some lighting conditions.

I'd prefer open sights, but my gun didn't shoot to the "point of aim" so I scoped it. After using one now on my turkey gun for quite a few years, you get use to it quickly. Big thing is to keep it on low power, say 1X-2X for the wider field of view. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I've used a scope for several years.Couldn't see going back to the bead on the barrel after using a scope for so long.

I had the same concern you mentioned about a closed field of view with a scope. That's why I went with the Bushnell Holosight. All the sighting benefits of a scope, except magnification, and a wide open field of view that's actually better than open sights. No fogging up problems either. Matter of fact shooting with both eyes open is natural with a Holosight. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have 2 friends that have now switched from TruGlo sights to a Holosight. The only problem is they are a little on the pricey side compared to other turkey hunting sights but probably less than 50% of a scope most people would put on a deer hunting rifle.

First year i hunted with just the factory bead. Next 2 years I used a scope. Then I went back to the factory bead until last season where I put a truglo bead on. My preference is the truglo bead, the majority of my shots are up close and personal so I prefer the wider view.

After sticking a Red Dot on mine I will NEVER switch back.
The Red Dot style scope is perfect for a turkey gun IMHO. Very quick to get use to and very fast tarkey acqusition.
Place the little floating red dot on what you want to slam and pull the trigger... LOL
The larger the obj the better too but I have done nicely with my 32mm model for years now.

"When the red dot pops up-the turkeys done." LOL

I've been using a 30mm red-dot for the past 4 yrs now and I won't go back to open sights.

I put an older Weaver Qwik point on my gun last year. It worked well. One nice thing was no batteries are required. Would like to have a bigger field of view thought

Pro's to open sights....cheap (factory bead) or even upgrade to fiber optic sights...they are much cheaper and easily installed. Also, less things that could go wrong.

Pro's to a scope...you can "sight in" your pattern. Lets say the majority of your bb's hit a little high right...with factory/fiber opic sights...you aim low left to compensate. With a scope...you move up to 10 yards or so and shoot a big hole in the paper...sight that in just like a rifle and get you pattern centered.

For me personally....I use a red dot...its (IMO) easier to see and zero in on a gobblers head/neck! Just keep a spare battery with you while hunting if you go with a red dot....just to be safe. http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Turkey hunting is the only time I use open sights. Then again I have never tried red dots or scopes.

I went with a 1-4x Leupold a couple of years ago, works great for me. At 1-2 power you still have a huge field of view and the heavy duplex really helps to focus the shot on the head, by that I mean it doesnt cover up the target like beads can do.
