Took him out with 20 guage 87 express

Here's the story!

Well, this hunt was in 1998 and I was a 9th grade in high school.

A friend and I was hunting a logging road. We just climbed in our climbers. Within 30 minutes of sitting down a small 4 pointer came walking by then a doe then this buck. I took aim at him and slowly took a deep breath and pulled the trigger. Quick hunt, but not over. The buck was around 45 yards, when I shot, the buck jumped and ran down the logging road and cut into a bottom. I kept hearing him running, then silence. Well, we walked around for about 2 hours with only noticing 10 small spots of blood. I thought I naied him, but guess not. We came back three other days, but no luck

Well, later that spring while out hunting for mushrooms I came across some hair, which looked like deer hair, followed it up into a big thicket, the same thicket we looked in, and found some bones. Followed some more and found a old bone which turned out to be his leg. Then right beside a log was the spine and this skull you see in the pic. I went home called up my friend that was hunting with me to get over here, I found something that will tickle his feathers. He saw the rack in the yard and immediately said "you found the rack" But also tells everyone that it shouldn't be my deer cause we didn't find him during that pervious fall.

What do you all think??? Should this buck be accounted for in my trophy case?? or not??

I'll respect anuone's opinions. I think it should, I shot him legally but never found him.

Hope you enjoyed the pic.

If you hooked a 24" Rainbow but it got away, later you found him washed up on the bank. Would you count that as a trophy fish?
Sorry, but I have to agree with your friend. You may have shot him legally, but you didn't tag him.
Look at it this way; You are going to get your first shotgun deer someday, and it may be bigger than the one that went un-recovered. .....popgun

I have to agree with pop, and muzzy. During early archery I shot at my first deer with a bow. Was a doe at 20 yards, and I hit it a little far back. I let her sit for almost 2 hours, and then walked up to where I last seen her. She was bedded right there ,and she got up and slowly walked away. I knew she wasn't gonna go far, and had no doubt I would recover this deer. I went to work, and about 6 hours later my bro and I went looking for her. My bro found her 30 yards from where I last seen her. but the coyotes found her first. I don't consider that my first archery deer. I still consider that I haven't taken a deer with bow and arrow. Not recovering that doe still haunts me.

Thanks I respect everyone opinions, I have the deer skull as you can see, I'll scratch him off. I felt the same way, but didn't want to give him up. Thank you.
