Looking to do a self guided elk hunt again this fall. We can go to Area 53 in New Mexico, (near Taos/Questa), OTC in Colorado, or Alberta on a host hunt. It would be with rifle or M/L.

New Mexico Bill http://www.realtree.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Based on what I have heard the largest elk herd in the state inhabits Area 53.

Alberta has some good bulls, but in most areas from what i have seen(a group of my dad's friends go every year) the overall success rate is low. The have used a few different outfitters and got some good bulls, but hunted hard and had ow overall success. I would also suggest new mexico(based only on what i have read).

We bow hunted New Mexico last year. Very tough hunting for a flatlander. Tags are very expensive as well. It was $490 for the license in addition to the price of the landowner tag.

Actually we do have elk in Indiana, just not free-roaming elk. I can think of 4 places within an hour drive of me that have elk.

Like someone else said, for trophy bulls I'd vote for New Mexico. For a more inexpensive do it yourself hunt I'd have to say Colorado.
