Hi everyone, checking in. I was on the winning team last year (http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58966), the "Tom Takers (http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54480)", and am vying for a repeat! ;)

I drew a limited access hunt in Upper Sardis WMA in northern Mississippi and am headed there in a couple of weeks. Hopefully I'll have a nice Eastern from that trip to add to the team tally, but if not, my Oklahoma home season runs April 6-May 6. I'll be hunting family land in southeastern Oklahoma from opening day until I get my limit or time runs out, whichever comes first. I'm also in the draw for a limited access Merriam's hunt in New Mexico that would be in May. The odds are long, but my fingers are crossed, so we'll see.

Concerning team names, here's a few for consideration:
* 'Spur Stringers'
* 'The Killers' (says what we do and I like the band...)
* reprise 'Turkey Takers' (this was my 2006 team name) or 'Tom Takers' (my 2007 team name)

Other ideas for team name?

BTW, below are my 2007 double (http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56700) and 2006 strutter (http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35408) to get everyone's appetites whetted...let's see your last few birds, too!

Hello everyone. Just waiting on spring and the mid April opener here. If I draw the tag I will be chasing a Merriam and if not it will be an Eastern. I usually split my spring hunts between black bear and turkeys. Any name you pick is fine with me. Good luck to everyone!

I like the name. Way to go HuntnMa! I just returned from a vacation in southern Utah with temperatures in the high 70's to temperatures in the mid 30's here in Montana. With turkey season starting the 12th of next month here, I sure hope it warms up some. Good luck to all.

I got a 9 1/2 inch bearded tom opening morning. 3/4 inch spurs so he's probably a two year old.

I'll post the story and pics once I'm back home, next weekend. Til then, after bird #2.

Good luck to everyone else still at it (or soon to be)!

Way to go Elnor! The season here starts this Saturday although I have to work this weekend but the first day that I'm off (Tuesday) I will surely be out there. I might sneak in a hunt Sunday after work as I get off at 4:00 PM. Hopefully the weather gets this rain/snow stuff done with by then.

Thanks for all of the congrats! It was a very fun and memorable hunt; more on that in the story (see link below).

Unfortunately my hunting was stormed out (rain/sleet/high wind, the whole bundle of bad spring weather in Oklahoma) a couple of days early, before I pulled the trigger on a bird #2.

I did get my first bird of the year entered into the Realtree contest photo thread, however. Click here for the entry (http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?p=882834#post882834) and here to read the full story of the hunt (http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?p=882833#post882833).

Here's a pic of the happy hunter with a not so happy longbeard:
http://billday.com/Images/Shared/20080406_2103.spitNDrum.jpg

Should be worth 51 points to the team. HuntnMa, did you get your bird entered into the contest photo post thread, too? Anyone else doing any good?

No bird for me yet, but I've got a big'n on the run. He's smart, I've just got to see if he's smart enough to find his way over my shoulder. The hard one's are always the most rewarding. Hopefully I'll get'm and add some major points for the team. KS

I was after a difficult bird for four days this week and finally got him yesterday morning. He'd walk away from calling, gobbling all the while. He also appeared to shun decoys and roosted alone, making me thinking he was either 3+ years old and a good survivor or subdominant and tired of being a whipping-bird for the boss tom.

His 10 7/8 inch beard, 1 3/8 spurs, and 21 pound heft seem to testify to the former. :D

If only I'd gotten him first, we'd have even more points for Team Primeros. I'll vote for the ability to "upgrade" our turkey entry any day...

I'll post again once I have the story and a photo or two posted.

The story of my second bird is posted in the Turkey Forum as "A Limbhanger Named Hummer (http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72387)". Here's a teaser pic, read the full story for a couple more.

Have any of you ever hunted Rios in western Oklahoma? I'm considering going out next weekend with my father to hunt in Black Kettle National Grassland and/or Packsaddle WMA. I've never been to either and would appreciate any pointers for them, or other nearby options, if you've been out that way.

So far nothing for me yet, I was however able to film my daughter shooting her first turkey. Also was able to film my 85 year old grandpa kill his first double bearded turkey. This is the first year for me to ever get any hunts on video, it's been fun. I'll be out working on getting me now hopefully with my bow. Here are a couple pics. Good luck everyone!

Here is a picture about 30 seconds before my daughter shot.

That is fantastic! Congratulations to your daughter and grandfather!

I hope I get the chance to film my daughter's first. She's only four but already has a couple slates and a wingbone I made for her. I'm looking forward to the day her patience and stealth start catching up to her calling chops and enthusiasm. :-)

Congrats again to your family!

Thanks elnor, it's been a great season so far now I just need to get mine. I'm going to try and get one with my bow and film it so we'll so what happens. Of course I'll bring along my shotgun just in case! Congrats again to you great pics.

My dad killed his second bird of the year yesterday, and get this: It was the big brother to my Hummer (http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72387), 22 pounds dressed, 11.5 inch beard, 1 3/8 inch spurs!

I thought I had him beat for the year, and then he pulls that on me! :)

Since we've both taken the two birds OK allows for the southeastern block of counties, we're now planning to definitely head out west and hunt Rios this final weekend of the season (OK's season closes April 6th). Sure would be cool to kill a Rio double together and tag out, fingers crossed...

We did make it out west for four days of hunting, right up until season close, yesterday May 6th.

We saw a lot of hens, but gobblers were sparse. Actually, we saw four jakes while driving by an abandoned house on private land, but only got after one gobbling longbeard in the public hunting units. Unfortunately, I managed to score my first miss ever on that bird, coming home with only a few feathers he managed to lose as he skedaddled out of there. :(

The trip and time with family were great, though. If I can find some time, I'll post a few of the photos I took of the wildlife, especially turkeys, for everyone to check out.

I hate to say this but, no turkey this year :( this is the first time in 8 years with no turkey. Not because I wasn't out there I hunted 7 of the last 9 days each day till the 1pm cut off. Close a few times but something always happened. Sorry guys!

elkoholic
05-17-2008, 11:01 PM
Well....I have to admit I got skunked this year. Tomorrow is the last day and unless I run over a gobbler with the car on the way to work, it just isn't not going to happen. My best opportunity for the year came a little over one week ago when I had a gobbler in my sights at about 20 yards, but unfortunately the neighbor's horse was just another 10 yards behind the turkey and the end result was the gobbler escaped unharmed as he moved off with his hens. Maybe next year.

Sorry to hear you all didn't get one, mo_hunter and elkoholic.

Anybody else still hunting? I've put away my turkey gear and am turning to planning and prep for this fall's hunts. First up: I just checked the Kentucky elk drawing and was selected for a cow tag for this fall! So I need to do some speed-research about KY Elk Hunt Units and make a selection asap and start thinking about heading east for elk (that seems counter-intuitive, doesn't it? :)
