Last year I bagged my first bird... a nice little 14# jake. After the season I had decided I wouldn't take another. Well, we only had 3 and a half days of hunting before we had to pack up and head home. Wednesday all day and Thursday (last 1/2 day of hunting) the birds were silent. I had decided to pull out all the stops and my brother and I were set up 80-85 yards from each other and calling tandem. We were throwing out a lot of cutting, yelps, and clucks. We called in bird from WAY out - at least 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the first time we heard him gobble. He came in from my side and stopped at my decoys. When I first spotted him my heart sake a bit (despite beating 180+) - another jake. When it was clear he wasn't likely to move past my decoys I decided to drop him. My Winchester 1400 and Winchester 3" 2oz #5's dropped him on the spot - he never so much as flapped. 28 paces from my seat. Decent little double bearded jake - 15# (approx), first beard 4" and second beard 3.5". Spurs were nubs (1/4" and 3/16"). Meat on the table. I only wish he would have moved in and let my brother take his first bird. I'll take what I can get with less than 2 hours left to hunt, however.

For what it's worth I hadn't noticed the coincidental message on the fishing ruler I used the measure the beards! Fitting, eh?!
