VABuckSlayer checking in!
I'm cool with whatever you guys want to do for a name.
I'm getting geared up for the season. Our bow season starts Oct. 4th. I'm getting the rest of the food plots in and hanging stands. Lot of work going into this season. I have one particular deer I'm after this year. I call him "Shaggy". He's on the 70 acres my dad owns behind my house. I have pictures of him in my yard from last year. He's a 4 1/2 year old this year. He's a main frame 8 with 3 kickers. 1 maybe 2 of them will go 1" so he may have 10 pts. Here's a couple pictures of him from this summer. Also here's the property behind my house. My house is on the 5 acres in yellow. Just wanted to give you guys an idea of what I'm doing.

Thanks Kevin! He would be a nice addition to my living room! :D I'm pumped and ready to get started. I'll post more pics as the season goes on.
Here is a pic of Shaggy last year in my yard. The dried up velvet he still had then was shaggy looking hence his name! :D

whitetailtrax finally checking in - hate it when work gets in the way of hunting, fishing, realtree forums, etc. I am just a bit preoccupied with my once-in-a-lifetime bighorn sheep hunt, so I won't likely have anything to add to our total until probably late November. I will still check in though and provide updates on my sheep hunting if anyone cares. Best of luck team!!!!!
No problem, bud. Concentrate on that sheep hunt, but keep us updated too. And we'd like some pics if possible.:D:D

Cool... cause I'm ready to put the SMACK DOWN on a nice 140 class 8pt!!! ;)
Was hoping to have some trail cam pics this weekend, but with Ike threatening to throw 5-10 inches on us, I'm going to have to put off going until next weekend. My lease is up in the mountains just north of us, and I've seen the creeks become impassable after just 2 inches of hard rain.
Just over two weeks left till D-day. With 50 degree morning temps, my neck is about as swollen as its gonna get.:D

I haven't been seeing the deer in the fields much lately. Guess they are hitting the acorns hard now. Usually happens 2 weeks before the season starts... when you've had them patterned all summer!!! I need to get my cam back out and figure out where they have relocated!!!
Didn't get a chance to make it to the lease this weekend, but I did manage to shoot my bow quite a bit. Even shot a tournament(first of the year....wow!). Ended up shooting a 254 on a 25 target course scoring low 12's. We were able to bring our range finders due to this being the last tournament of the year. I got to use mine for about 10 targets before the batteries crapped out on me.:D All in all, I was very proud of my shooting.
I've got my confidence back and the deer are shaking in their tracks down here as we speak.:D
9 days and counting.
Under a week to go. Taking off work opening day. So far the wind is perfect and the temp's are: Low--54 High--74.

Good job Kirk! Congrats on the kill!
I had a close call yesterday. Had 2 deer under my stand when I got there. Bumped them off and after getting set up I could hear deer moving to my left. A gust of wind kicked up all of a sudden and took my scent in there direction and I got busted. One deer was a buck, the second was small, and the third was a big deer but I couldn't tell what it was. Figures... that was the only wind for the evening. I had another doe come close about 15 minutes after that but she fed off in a different direction and never gave me a shot. Close call last night... thought I was going to put some points on the board for us.
BTW... when I was headed back to the house and got out into the field I could make out 3 deer in my food plot in the moon light. The lead deer was a decent buck. I called my wife and had her drive my truck to the field to run them off so I wouldn't get busted walking across the field to my house. I'm pretty sure it was a 2.5 year old 7pt I've been seeing a lot of with 2 of his small buddies. I'm going to hunt a different stand today that is in that area behind the food plot. Those 3 bucks will get a free pass though! :D
Here's a picture of the 3 Amigos! :D:D:D

Went out last night and only saw 1 little bitty doe. She came up and sniffed the climbing sticks on the tree. :D I won't get to hunt again until next week. Hopefully things will get better then.

Went out last night and got rained on about 30 minutes before sundown. I gave up and left a little after sundown.
Oh yeah, the rain was pellets. Some guys came out about 200 yards from where I was and started shooting skeet
They looked pretty surprised when they saw me coming out of the woods. Don't understand why, my truck was only about 100 yards from theirs.

Yeah!!!! its snowing in montana. hope that this makes the deer moove a little more than it did before the storm hit.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Went out this morning expecting big things. 15 minutes after daylight, a .22 goes off about 100 yards from me. A few minutes later it fires again and a squirrel about 50 yards in front of me falls to the ground. Needless to say, I am ticked off. Can't say much since its public ground, but I let the guy know that I hunt this spot regularly. It wasn't a nice discussion either.:D

Sorry I haven't been around at all guys. Work and family comittments have really kept me out of the woods so far this year. I'm patiently waiting for the bighorn rut to start so I can concentrate on my sheep tag the first couple weeks of November. Tried to hunt a day last weekend, but the snow set in and I couldn't glass for sheep. Did see a group of nine rams before the snow came in, but neither of the two mature rams in the group were quite what I wanted. Took a drive and stumbled onto a dandy bull moose and a couple very nice whitetails. I think it was a good antler year in Montana. I will try to provide more updates on my sheep hunting and perhaps I'll get around to shooting a deer as well - rifle season opens in 9 days. Keep after em team!
Good luck with the rams. Keep us updated for sure!
I'm headed out in about 30 minutes. We've got a cold snap coming through so I'm hoping to see a lot of action.

I passed on a young 7pt last night. I wanted to release an arrow bad but couldn't do it. I'm going again tonight and also in the morning. Getting cooler here too... just need it to stop raining some!!
Same here, VA. Passed on a young 6 point yesterday morning. Was disappointed, though. Every weather website I looked at called for a NNE or NE wind. Got to my stand only to find that the wind was from the S the majority of the morning. The young buck didn't smell me, but I'm pretty sure if a mature deer came close, they did.
Headed out this morning. Hopefully, the predicted NW or W wind will be correct.
Laid the smack down on another doe this morning.
The Rage broadhead really did its job. She ran less than 25 yards before piling up.
I added her to the contest but hope to upgrade her before the year is up.

Had some good chasing going on Tues. night. Couldn't get a shot though. Wed. I had deer all in the field early when I got home. Saw nothing from my stand. On a good note... my aunt called me last night and gave me permission again to hunt her 100 acre farm. She's selling it to the county for a park so I couldn't hunt it last year. I killed a 26" wide 10pt there back in 1998. He was the smaller of the 2 I was after that year. The big one got hit by a car. He was a 28" 8pt. I can't wait to get in there and hunt it again. Might go tomorrow after work! Here's the 26" 10pt I shot with my muzzleloader in 98.

Kev,
You would be shocked that there are deer like that on that property. It's surrounded by developements. There's a subdivision to the west, an apartment complex to the NE, and a YMCA to the east. Here's an aerial photo of the property. Crazy that big deer are in this little area!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/EricRowe/AuntSallysFarm.jpg
You're not lying. I'd bet there's some farmland to the south though??
VABuckSlayer
10-23-2008, 02:03 PM
Not really. There is a big swamp back there eventually. There is a major airport (Richmond International) on the other side of the subdivision. :D I use the planes going by and taking off to cover the sound I make walking in the woods! ;):D The only farms around are peoples gardens. That's what the deer around there terrorize! :D:D:D
Well, I can upgrade my doe. Today was opening of blackpowder and I took my son, Chase(5) along with me. I had already made up my mind to take anything that came within range. As luck would have it, a 6 point came in from a direction that Chase was watching so he got to see it first. Couldn't pass it up so I put a 80 yard shot right behind the shoulder and he piled up within sight of our stand. I've never seen Chase so excited.
I've killed bigger bucks, that's for sure, but I'm not sure if I've killed one that meant more to me that this 6'er.:D

I'm seeing lots of bucks, well a few, but nothing legal. I've seen deer every time I've gone out but only one I could shoot. It was a very small yearling doe, probably 50-60lbs and I don't want to burn a tag on just a few quarter pounders and some jerky. I want some real meat.

I won't get too many chances this week to hunt after work. Just Tues. and Thurs. This is our last week of bow season (we can bow hunt all year though). I need to find the time to sight in the smokepole before Sat. It should still be on from last year though but I want to make sure. Can't wait!!!

Nice buck there MCH - way to go! I haven't had a chance to chase deer around yet. My son, Tanner, was able to find a mule deer to his liking on opening day - 2 Sundays ago. This was his second deer and he wanted a 4-point (Western count) and that's what we found. He made a terrific shot at about 200-250 yards. He is very confident with his 7mm-08 - that is a fantastic caliber if anyone is in the market for a youth caliber.
I'm headed over to Rock Creek in the morning to finally get serious about sheep hunting for a few days. If I don't find what I'm looking for, I will be back over the week of Thanksgiving. I will post some pics next week if I'm successful. In the meantime, here is a picture of Tanner and his young 4x4 Montana muley.

this weekend i was in North Dakota bowhuntin.and the rut kicked off when the thursday and friday were blizzard and made two to three feet of snow fall to the ground. I sat in the stand for a day or two and saw some absolute monsters but they just wouldnt offer me a shot. yesterday i went out at 11:30 and sat the rest of the day and saw some good deer cruiseing around but couldnt get a shot. at about 5:30 I heard a doe bleat in front of me about 150 yards and she was being followed by a BIG!! main frame 5-by-5 with a couple stickers. they ran around for about fifteen min. and then tha doe turned and headed towards me. The buck followed behind her about twenty five yards and as she walked by me at about 10 yards outside of my shooting lanes i was so mad because i thought the buck would follow her and i wouldnt get a shot. but she circled around and came out to my left where i could shoot. the buck cut right under my stand and I drew back and shot him at about 12 yards. he ran like 60 yards and fell dead!!!!
He will score roughly about 167" he was an 8 by 6 and had a 19 2/8 inside spread I will get pictures up in a day or so.

Finally got one after a year of being skunked. This big momma and a yearling doe came out about 4:00 this afternoon. Who says 223 is too small for deer. She went down in 20 yards, quickest I've seen except for a buck I shot with my 25-06.

Way to go guys... y'all are putting them on the ground! Congrats to you all! Equalizer.... 167"... that's a stud! Congrats!!
I passed on an 18" or so 6pt on Monday. Maybe should have shot him but there are bigger bucks on that property. I'm hunting Sat. and Mon-Tues. next week. Our rut is kind of wierd this year! Hope it picks up soon!

My doe was still lactating and was showing no signs of estrus activity. She was with a decent sized yearling doe who will live fine, but will be weened sooner than she thought.

Nice job everyone! Way to go Equalizer - sounds like a great buck - can't wait to see some pics! I was fortunate to put a ram on the ground last Friday - the hunt of a lifetime and I couldn't be happier with the ram I found. Will try to get some pics up here soon.

Congrats on the doe, john!
Also, congrats to beagleboy for the big 8!
Looks like our team is finally starting to come around. Hopefully, I can add some more points fairly soon.
Well, guys. I shot a nice 8 point Sunday morning but lost the blood trail. I guessed him for 25 but he was 20 and I think I may have hit a limb as well.

Hey guys... I gave us another 5 pts. Smacked a slick last night. 100 yard shot with the slug gun. Dropped her in her tracks. Now I need to find a good buck!

Hey guys - I actually shot a deer this year! First one in years! Was more for the benefit of my 9 year old who was along for the hunt than anything else. He was sooooo excited for this hunt and I was thrilled to shoot something with him by my side. My 14 year old shot a doe on the same day so the trip was a huge success. I don't get a chance to hunt deer much, so I believe this is the first year that I am actually going to earn some points for my team! I'm usually just dead wieght! I will try to get him entered soon. Here's a pic.

Here's another for Team Smackdown. I shot him last Tuesday morning.
Alright guys! Way to put some points on the board. I've still got the 6 point I can add but plan on waiting to see if I can't get some more points.
Congratulations everyone!

We were over near Seeley Lake - just a skiff of snow as you can see in the picture. Conditions throughout the state have been lousy as you know. On a bright note, my son, Tanner, shot his first elk yesterday! Found a cow in the Elkhorn Mountains outside of Helena where we live. Has been a great season for both Tanner and I, with his first elk, my bighorn ram, and both of us shooting bucks!

Gun season is over here but I've got until Feb 28 for bow season ends. Hopefully I can upgrade with some horns.

Congrats guys on your success!
I saw Shaggy Friday afternoon for the first time since the season came in. I hope he's going to stay on our property for now on! I'm going to hunt him a few days this week. He's a main frame 8pt with 4 stickers that may go an inch. I'm going to try him the next 2 days. Wish me luck!
Well, gun season ended with no blood. Bow season lasts until Jan. 15th so maybe I'll get lucky and upgrade my 11 points.
Gator and The_Kat are coming down this weekend. Hopefully, I can deflate a lung or two.

I wish I could kill a 170 class! :D
This is my last week of the season. Ends after Saturday. I'm hunting a 1/2 day Wed. then Thur.-Sat. We're hunting 2 farms Thur&Fri that haven't been hunted yet this year. Hope it works out. I would hate to have to eat 3 buck tags this year!
Good luck, VA. Hope you get a big one. My season is winding down to. We have to till the 15th of Jan, though. Bow only.

Well guys my season is over. I didn't get another deer. I saw 2 small bucks on Saturday but they didn't meet the club minimum on rack size. They will be nice next year. A couple hunts I thought would be good were flops. I had a really disappointing season and the worst one for me in a long time. Sorry guys I wasn't much help! Good luck to the rest of you who are still hunting!
