Did anyone else think it was not cool when the rev (lower case) at the end criticised the white's "When white will get it right" He had good things to say for browns and reds and all other colors. Whats a brown or a red? I thought we were Americans?

I am done with the race thing....some who are complaining about race are the ones that are truly racist!!

Just not cool

Sure don't want to knit pick, but I did hear the reverends speech and I can certainly see your point in what he said and how it was said. While I appreciate the freedoms of speech and I could understand most of what the man said, I really do not know what the point was in him saying what he did the way he said it in regards to the remark you quoted.

Yeah I heard it and I posted about it on my site...........It was rediculous and I am sick of the reverse racism here. Everyone loves to blame the white man but I was no slave owner, neither were my grandparents.......................When are we done paying for what our ancestors did? Funny thing is not one person there was ever a slave and nor will they every be but they sure do talk it up like they were affected by it.

I caught it, too. It is most unfortunate, but I think the racism issue will only increase as those who think they are entitled to the misgivings of the past are empowered to get even if you will.

WOW! Is he saying that blacks STILL have to sit in the back of the bus? I am assuming that "red man" is of TRUE Native American heritage? To me, the way "these" people live is of their doing. Everyone living in the US has the same oppurtunities to get ahead in life, some may just have to work harder than others.

Just imagine if a white Reverend had said that, what would people be saying about THAT!!

Was hoping to find a link to the actual video Mike, but have still come up empty. The way he said it probably should be heard in order to really get a good perspective, but the words(what he said) is what it is.

Seems to me that if we ever want to move past the past, those who keep bringing it up probably also need to move past it. Pretty sad really.

Transcript courtesy Federal News Service
God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou who has brought us thus far along the way, thou who has by thy might led us into the light, keep us forever in the path, we pray, lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee. Shadowed beneath thy hand may we forever stand -- true to thee, O God, and true to our native land.
We truly give thanks for the glorious experience we've shared this day. We pray now, O Lord, for your blessing upon thy servant, Barack Obama, the 44th president of these United States, his family and his administration. He has come to this high office at a low moment in the national and, indeed, the global fiscal climate. But because we know you got the whole world in your hand, we pray for not only our nation, but for the community of nations. Our faith does not shrink, though pressed by the flood of mortal ills.
For we know that, Lord, you're able and you're willing to work through faithful leadership to restore stability, mend our brokenness, heal our wounds and deliver us from the exploitation of the poor or the least of these and from favoritism toward the rich, the elite of these.
We thank you for the empowering of thy servant, our 44th president, to inspire our nation to believe that, yes, we can work together to achieve a more perfect union. And while we have sown the seeds of greed -- the wind of greed and corruption, and even as we reap the whirlwind of social and economic disruption, we seek forgiveness and we come in a spirit of unity and solidarity to commit our support to our president by our willingness to make sacrifices, to respect your creation, to turn to each other and not on each other.
And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance.
And as we leave this mountaintop, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Let us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our churches, our temples, our mosques, or wherever we seek your will.
Bless President Barack, First Lady Michelle. Look over our little, angelic Sasha and Malia.
We go now to walk together, children, pledging that we won't get weary in the difficult days ahead. We know you will not leave us alone, with your hands of power and your heart of love.
Help us then, now, Lord, to work for that day when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, when tanks will be beaten into tractors, when every man and every woman shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid; when justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.
Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around -- (laughter) -- when yellow will be mellow -- (laughter) -- when the red man can get ahead, man -- (laughter) -- and when white will embrace what is right.
Let all those who do justice and love mercy say amen.
AUDIENCE: Amen!
REV. LOWERY: Say amen --
AUDIENCE: Amen!
REV. LOWERY: -- and amen.
AUDIENCE: Amen! (Cheers, applause.)
END.

I am not going to lose any sleep over it. It has been that way with black America for a long time...Nothing changed

"...help us work for that day when black will not be asked to give back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right." -Reverend Lowery

Are you freakin' kidding me? Can you imagine the backlash a white pastor, or any white man for that matter, would endure if he said these things? I'm not a racist man, not in the least. I was taught to love, no matter of color or creed, and I have tried my best to do that throughout my life. But it was hard for me to listen to that, all the while having to hear daily how whites are racist. But this guy can get up on a stage in front of millions of people and say that, and it's no "big deal"? It's a sad state that we live in people, very sad.

btw, USA Today said that the benediction was, and I quote, "impassioned". Seriously?

I don't think the comment was appropriate, or necessary. Am I angered by it? A little bit I suppose, but at the same time things have happened in the past and if he chooses to bring them up that's his right. Not gonna contest it. Not worth my time personally. I do hope I see the day in my lifetime (though I doubt it), when racism truly is a topic of the past for all people.

I don't know about you, but the blacks around here are always up in everyones business, whoopin, hollerin, and "actin a fool". Get them in a group of blacks and your just another whitehead cracker to them. What about all the celebrities talkin crap about BLACK POWER now that obama is in power. The blackhouse......blah blah blah. What would happen if a white person started chanting white power on tv, and marched in parades with PROUD TO BE WHITE on their shirts? Slavery ended in the 1800's.....the 60's and 70's are decades ago. Black people are no more oppressed than any other race. Yet they'll always have the racism crutch.....

Alls I gotta say to black America is look at the statistics.....highest prison populations, highest welfare population, highest murder rate, highest drop out rate....the list goes on and on. Black people screw themselves with their crappy attitudes and ghetto wanna be thug ways.

Americans all have the oppurtunity to get what they want in life. You just have to get off your duff and go for it. Thats asking to much for them, because they feel they're entitled? Give me a frickn break.

Since theres a half black president they think they are gonna get away with more. This makes me sick, I can go on for hours but I'll stop now. I'll defend myself in saying I'm not racist against skin color, and when I say blacks, I do not mean each and everyone of them, just the majority.....I am however a bigget when it comes to no good lazy, gangster wanna be thugs who think they are owed something, whether they be white, black, yellow, red, pink, purple or spotted!

I can say this. In my experience in working in the prison... I know racism exists. However, blacks are just as racist as whites.... and vise-versa. I am tired of rap singing criminals, with their pants worn below the cheeks of their butts. Free speech is one thing.... but when you write Lyrics about killing cops, drugs, money from drugs, gangs, raping ho's and such.... I have to draw the line. Is this what we want people, black or white to idol? It makes me sick, when these gangsters win awards for selling this kind of trash, and the selling of albums, hiding behind the constitution. I am a firm believer in our constitution.... but the leaders in this country need to wake up, and try to take back our streets... and not by gun contol either. I remember, these wanna be rappers singing in their cell about shooting and blasting at a store.... I simply said..."Precisely why a got my concealed carry permit." You could have heard a pin drop, as I walked away.

good post, kyle.

todays racists are black. and i'll prove it: 98% of blacks voted for obama. 52% of voters voted for obama. 38% voted for mccain. shouldn't mccain have gotten 38% of the black vote if blacks were not prejudiced? could obama have been voted in if whites voted color the same way blacks voted color? no. roughly 10% of america is black. so, very clearly blacks voted for color and white would have been criticized for doing the EXACT same thing. blacks are prejudiced, not whites.

let's talk about ophra. she's the number one talk lady in america, making tens of millions of dollars yearly. if whites were prejudiced as accused by blacks, could that even be possible?

I am not a racist, but if comments keep being made like the rev, they can make me one. I work cannot believe that the rev, had to make a comment like he did at the inauguration. Obama was voted in by the white voters... so we are still racists? I am sick of being called a racist, becuase I am white. I am with you Kat on a few things.... I am sick of pants too big, that's worn below the cheeks of their butts. I am sick of rap "artist" condoning killing of cops, promoting violence, drugs, money, refering to women in their lyrics in a demeaning way. Not only having these lyrics in their songs, but someone is buying this trash, making them millions and winning awards in the process. I actually see blacks (afro americans... being politically correct or you will be scrutinized to offend someone) go to job interviews, dressed like thugs and complain that they cannot get a job. I also see whites dressed like thugs going to job inerviews. Neither will get a job, unless they try to not look like a criminal! We need to take back our streets without gun control. Actually make a prison... a prison and not a suite. And if you get the death penalty, you get one appeal, then death.... and if it is life in prison, it's life in prison! I am getting off the subject.... but I am fed up with politicans blaming guns and not the criminals using them wrongfully! I am sick of blacks throwing the race card into our faces... Is that asking too much? I am sick of things like "Black Entertainment Television" which plays rap promoting violence on their channel... what would happen if we wanted "White Entertainment Television"? It would be outrage and protest! I am willing to give Obama a chance, but we need to hold people like the rev accountable for what he says.

Everyone has a right to an opinion, and freedom of speech just as reverend Lowery utilized his right to free speech when he said what he did, which was not in my opinion in good taste. No bannings on the way, no reason for deleting posts so long as this discussion moves forward with civility and does not turn into bashing.

With that said I think I am going to do my best to put these type of remarks from these reverends and people associated with Obama behind me, and hope that somehow Obama will make wise choices and serve our country in a way that will not destroy what it is that makes this country so great. Remember here that it was not Obama who made the remarks, whether he knew of them or not may be another story, but think it is probably best to give the benefit of the doubt and not hold those remarks against Obama.

I too am very skeptical about Obama and his incoming administration, however if the man fails miserably it will not likely benefit anyone. I do not have to like it, but for the sake of the people and for the sake of our country I hope Obama proves at the very least to be a decent leader.

It's sort of foolish to say something to that effect when the US is swearing in it's first black President, who is in the position he is in largely in part to the large number of white voters that choose to vote for him.:o

The African-American population will never get ahead until they stop living in the past and start working towards the future. This sort of outright racism needs to be addressed as well.

I am with you , muggs! I watched Bill Cosby on Oprah one day saying these same things. He was then blasted by the black community for saying what he said. But it was the truth that they did not like. He said things such as, the way blacks dress, need to be fathers to their children about 75% of blacks children are born to single mothers (according to him) and they need to step up to the plate and be fathers , stop selling drugs and work for what they want. I could not believe that he was scrutinized for those statements! But sometimes... the truth hurts and it is just easier to blame society.

Though it is true that any white reverend would be ostracised for publicly announcing what's deemed to be universally racist, It is also true that you guys come from the experience of immigrants(historically) not slaves. The pastor that spoke (although wrongly I felt) did so because the constitution deems it so and becasue he's only two generations removed from slavery. The man is 80 years old which menas his grand parents were more than likely slaves. Yet his speech was divisive, much like what I see being said on here. I'm an American of African desent and yet, I have no ill will toward you or your ilk for your views. I'm simply a novice hunter who wanted to learn from the best. Team RealTree is such. However, as I've mentioned before on a previous post, the language and actions of the past will collectively do the U.S. no good. I supported President Bush in both wars and have family members who are veterans of both Desert Storm and the occuring conflict(s) in both Iraq and Afghanistan. If we "truly" are a nation united, why all the hate guys? Does it really matter who started what? Yes, it's true that slavery ended many years ago, but unfortunately, the psychological scars of the institution still persist. Not only with Black folk, but White folk as well. There is a saying that states, "if you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas"! In other words, former Slave and Master are inextricably and eternally tied together because the system that created an unequal society still exists(for both). If you doubt my inference ask yourself this... Why is it that I, a hard working American with my own property, family, concerns, etc. am so emotionally affected by others of which, I really have no personal connection to? It's really quite simple, whether we like it or not, we are indeed connected, not only as human beings, but as Americans who have inherited the society established and adhered to by our forefathers, including but not limited to: slavery, desegregation, women's suffrage, etc. We all have something that we could rightfully complain about. So, I respectfully ask as a novice hunter, educated American of African desent and dedicated fan of Michael Waddell and Mr. Jordon...can't we all get along? ; )

If we "truly" are a nation united, why all the hate guys?

Wel come to the forums, Countryblk. :) Very eloquent post. I would hope you ask that question to people like JZ and the rest of the gansta crowd. None of us here are responsible for those actions that continue to keep the fire lit...

Absolutely. Again welcome to the forums.

I think you will find this a great group of people who genuinely care about others and are passionate about hunting and the outdoors, lot of great advice can be found here and some really good people to share stories with.

As I mentioned before in one of my replies, I think it in the best interest to put the remarks made by Reverend Lowerey behind us and try not to hold that against Obama.

Thanks guys for your quick response and very real insight. I totally agree with your sentiments about BET and all negativity coming out of my community. Afterall if we fail, we ALL fail(uniformly). Hard work is the key but hard work is futile if you don't know what the heck you're doing. It's kinda like using a backhoe to strip tobacco! Not to wise my friends... ;)
In my case, I've found the more I know, the more I grow. That's why I chose this site and the outdoors channel to learn about collecting bones!!!! Wish me look guys and I'll do the same for you. By the way, Jay Z didn't speak for me 'cause I wish the new President as well as the newly retired one the best.
Have a good one.

Country Well said...

What i see as the problem is a realtive few people in this world stirring the pot all the time to make us all feel bad or tell us we have a problem.....when in reality most of us have no racist feelings of any kind.

I would have loved If Rice or another African American had won instead of a liberal that i feel threatens my rights. The president needs to be colorless!!! As should all of us!!!

Again Welcome to the forums, it is a good place and alot of people here would give you the shirt off their backs:)

I know that Countryblk. I was trying to say that there needs to be a change in attitudes for all. Appropriate repercussions need to be administered fairly. It is the type of behavior that is making it harder for black americans. Not everyone can be a JZ or P-diddy. They are sending the wrong message. It is a message of hate and disrespect with very little about a moral high ground...this needs changed somehow.
