My son and I will also be there first week of Montana rifle season for mulies and hopefully antelope. We are hunting 7-V Ranch for the second time. Last trip was fall of 2003. We got nice muley bucks during the rut. My son's was 26" and mine was 24". We saw some nice antelope, but it was after the season was out and they had shed a lot of horns. Now we only have to wait to see if we draw a tag for antelope. Applications will be out by the end of this month.

MY dad and a few guys hunt the eastern part of the state unguided. They have taken some dandy bucks, and other years it has been slim pickings. Bluetongue hit the area they were hunting hard one year, and another they just were in the wrong type of area. If it is a good outfitter they should get you on some nice bucks since they have time to scout and change locations if something happens to deer in one area. As far as antelope i will try to get some pics scanned, but if i can't here is the description. Good numbers, and some absolutely massive bucks! They don't hunt them, but looking for mulies they get some great pics. They saw one this fall that they and the rancher figure is a good 17" unfortunately it only has one side.

There are some excellent quality muleys and antelope here in Montana, especially on property locked up by the outfitters where limited numbers of hunters are allowed. The quality of this years buck will be affected by two factors. One is the continuing drought which will affect the quality of forage available to the animals. If the ranch in question has irrigated fields that will lessen the droughts impact. On the plus side, we have had one of the mildest winters ever and the past several winters have been relatively mild, which allows for better survival rates and also has the animals in better shape going into the spring. So, I would say that you have an excellent chance of taking a "trophy" class animal. Good hunting!
