Default Another 800 lb \'er (Bear) Taken in the Poconos

Just got off the Game Commission website. A 17 year old shot an 834 lb bear on the second day of our Bear season. ANd get this: his hunting partner shot a 586 lb'er about 45 minutes earlier in the same area! I'd say that was one sweet spot!

Last year we had 3 bears shot in the Poconos over 800 lbs- state record 867, 837 and one that was later determined to be taken illegally(would you believe the guy that shot it didn't have a bear tag) 808.

Yeah, we grow 'em big in the Poconos!

Here's the first part of the news release:

    THREE-DAY BEAR HARVEST HITS 2,423

HARRISBURG - While hunters in some portions of the state are participating in the extended bear season, the preliminary total bear harvest for the state's traditional three-day season was 2,423, according to reports filed at Pennsylvania Game Commission bear check stations.

Agency employees processed 2,423 black bears - 161 on the third day - at check stations on Nov. 22, 23 and 24. Hunters are required to have their harvested bears checked within 24 hours after tagging it.

In 2003, agency employees processed 2,851 black bears on the first three days, and the final harvest was 3,000 bears, including those bears taken in the extended season in Wildlife Management Unit 3D. In 2002, agency personnel processed 2,512 bears over the season's first three days, and the final harvest was 2,686 bears, including those taken in the extended season the Pike, Monroe and Carbon counties.

In 2001, the last time the state had a single three-day season, the total bear harvest was 3,063. In 2000, when the state record bear harvest was set, the three-day total was 3,075.

"The three-day total harvest may change slightly after all the harvest reports are compiled due to bears being brought to Region Offices after the check stations closed on Wednesday," said Mark Ternent, Game Commission bear biologist. "The harvest on the third day was depressed throughout state because of the rainy weather. However, the third day harvest generally only represents about 10 percent of the total harvest as most bear hunters have left the woods.

"With more than 2,400 bears taken in the three-day season, and the extended season underway, our prediction of harvesting between 2,500 and 3,000 bears appears to be on the mark."

After three days of hunting, 17-year-old Jeremy B. Kresge of Blakeslee, took an 834-pounder at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23, in Tunkhannock Township, Monroe County. Kresge's hunting partner, William Graver, also of Blakeslee, took a 586-pounder at 3:45 p.m. on the same day in the same township. This bear tied for the tenth largest taken so far.
