Default January Caribou hunt in northern Quebec....

Hey guys...I just won a caribou hunt for next January in the James Bay region of Quebec. The hunt is with http://www.kiskimaastakin.com. Has anybody ever hunted with these guys? I know most/all of the bulls will have dropped their antlers by then. Are the cows antlers ever big enough to have a good mount done? Or, should I just expect to have a couple of rugs made?

Any info you guys could give would be great. I know it's going to be cold. I'm not worried about that. I'm really hoping someone has been there in the late season.

    Thanks.

ALl the bulls wil have dropped and cows antlers will be quite small. YOu will have a great but cold hunt, and get some good meat out of the deal though.

Good thinking buckee, depending on snow dept and terrain that may work well. I know we did a canoe trip in teh NWT a few summers ago and i spent as much time collecting caribou sheds as fishing. Unfortunately all i could do was make huge piles of them since there wasn't mush extra room in the float plane when we got picked up. I sure found some beauties though.

Congrats on winning the hunt, but if it were me, I would pass or give it to someone else. I would not waste my time and money going on a cow hunt. The bitter cold temps, would be ok if I could get a good set of antlers but freezing my toucas off for a cow, no thanks.

Maybe you can kick in a little $ and get an earlier hunt.

Congrats on winning the hunt. Dress warm LOL

I will be in the same area November 2005 with a fellow Realtree member for the winter hunt. I have talked to several people who have gone then & have been told that it is a fun hunt where you can get decent bulls but the real trophies have usually dropped by then. And that is November! So it sounds like you will be on a cow hunt. At any rate, if you go, good luck & like I said .... Dress Warm!

that is cool! I had a blast in november (see my photo album for my bull). I shot a cow as well she had a lot smaller reck then the bull but is real neat with lots of points. I scual caped her and have it sitting in my "trophy" room (spair bedroom). not worth the cost for a mount in my opion. allwhough she would have made a nice blanket. some friends have had them made, realy warm.
I guess by jan. the hide and fir will be realy long and thick. it should make a realy nice blanket. maybe you can look for a cow with good color.
make sure you dress warm. we were luckey that the temp stayed above 0F. but the year before it was
    -40C in Nov.!
    have fun!
    frank
    btw the meat is fantastic!

just a thought, if it is unguided, you may (should spend a bit more and go guided). you are farther out then mirage outfitters (we stayed with them). if you drive up, it is a He!! of a drive. about 24 hours drive from Burlington Vt. and we had so so weather. gas is also expancive. once you get to the JBH (about 5.00 a gal.)
I have started a post about my trip up, under the big game section. check it out. pm if you have any questions.
