I converted to musket caps on all my ml rifles a few years back and wouldn't even consider returning to #11s. They are a hotter ignition source and MUCH easier to handle. The only problem I've ever had with the musket caps is when I bought a cheap brand and had some of the explosive come loose from the metal. The ONLY musket caps I buy now are the Dynamit Nobel brand.
WABS, did you ever try the shotgun primers 209's ?
I haven't tried musket caps with the Encore. I am willing to always try something new
Mike
I agree with WABS 100% and then some!!
I started with #11's then switched to Magnum 11's but they didn't hold a candle to musket caps. I havn't had a misfire since I switched. I also use nothing but Dynamit Nobel, they come in a red plastic tin.
I use both. For number 11 I'm using the Remington hot caps and musket caps CCI, I've had no trouble with either one.
I now use only the number 11 hotter percussion caps from remington in my black diamond. Have never had any ignition problems with this setup. I tried the 209 shotgun primers and did not like them for convenience reasons, and saw no difference in performance with my loads. The number 11 caps are so much easier to get on and off the nipple on my gun under the scope with my fingers without having to fumble for a tool to remove them.
I've never tried the 209 primers. I actually have a conversion kit for my Black Diamond but have always been so pleased with the musket caps I've never converted it. I did just purchase one of the 420 A&H guns that uses 209 primers - haven't shot it yet. Maybe when I start shooting it it may convince me to convert. I've NEVER had a misfire with my Black Diamond when using the Dynamit Nobel musket caps and that's in almost 10 years of use (both range and hunting).
