Man, that is scary. that guy is sooo lucky he wasn't more seriously hurt, or killed. I would be leary of ever shooting a ml'er again if that was me!

"......... The breech plug stripped out from the threads........

    ........no bulge in the barrel............."

Hard to say EXACTLY what took place. Dosen't look like a barrel failure. Sounds like the guy was very lucky if you consider what could have happened.

........ "and I know it wasnt double charged".........

Seems that everytime we see some failure (be it breech loader or ml) posted on the net that the one point the author is very clear on is that there wasn't any operator error involved. Just once I'd like to see someone say that they just might have fudged up.

There are no conclusions to be drawn from this.

I seen a guy shoot a sidelock one day with two loads in the barrel that sound suprisingly similiar. All the pressure came backwards, turned the nipple into shrapnel and took the threads right out of the gun where the nipple screwed in.Id of never guessed you could get a whole breechplug to blow out backwards though.

Personally I can believe it was the guns fault, Im not a CVA fan and thier customer service is a joke IMO.

Maybe it is more CVA's that this happen to because they way outsell the others? Does this"alledged failure" happen to more than 1 in 20,000?

What is on another board should stay on the other board. Geez they seem to like this meandering better.

    Triple 7,

I've used 90 grains (Volume) of "777" (Loose FFG) in both my T/C Black Diamond and Knight MK-85 in-lines with no indication of high pressures. While the T/C shoots "777" very well, my Knight perfers Pyrodex RS FFG. Both are .50 Cal.

Sounds like it could be anything. Im sure if it was double charged or if he forgot to tighten the breech plug he would admit it.

I'm not jumping on you here, but just making a minor point. This isn't the first I've heard about blowing. 2 other magnum rated CVA's and a Winchester have also blown and the owner or a related party have released that info. If you read further down the page on that link, you'll find a PI discussing two cases he has. One was a barrel blow and the other was a breach plug letting go.

I'm not saying that it's not the owner's fault, but so far they've been all the same companies guns (BPI) and that makes me wonder.

Maybe they outsell the others cause thier guns are junk and they make em cheaper than anyone else.Theres a ton of guys new to muzzleloading every year that dont understand how poor the quality control on Ml are and think theyre getting a great deal on an inline for 100$.

But thats just another possibility i thought id throw out there

Maybe then we should just ban muzzleloading?

After all there are way too many idiots out there just trying to make a pipe bomb?

i wouldn't pass down the man who had the problem that it washis fault and that it may of actually been the gun not him. i have seen what happens when a black powder is double charged and saw what happened to the guy and it wasn't what happened to him. another thing is that maybe the gun being used for three years may of actually weakened the breech pkug we don't know that this was the time the gun gave up the ghost and it could of been a factory defect that finally reared it's ugly head. how often do we shoot our black powder guns maybe once or twice before we go hunt and it was just the right amount of time for the defect to show up and he was the unlucky guy who got it.
think about it and all the threads are stripped and you can't find the breech plug. probably the plug went into many pieces and can go many distances away. it could be there was problem with other guns that haven't showed up yet and maybe in time they will do what this gun did. and it could be that, that lot is a time bomb just my thoughts on the situation

After reading this, and some of the comments on the other forum, I am somewhat concerned now. I have a TRADITIONS ML which has basically the same barrel that the CVA's and Winchesters do. My gun is rated at 100gr of powder, which is what I shoot, but it is the CLEAN SHOT pellets. Anyone think that there may be a chance of the same thing happening with this gun as what has happened with these others? Will shooting the max load all the time cause to much stress on the gun?

I think your fine as long as you don't shoot more than 80 gr of loose 777. The 777 pellets match up to the Pyrodex pellets by velocity, but I'm not entirely sure where the Clean Shot pellets rate. From my experience with them (the old round ones) it wasn't that bad and seemed to get less velocity than Pyrodex pellets.

I thought Clean Shot went out of buisiness and reorginized as American Pioneeer.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned after reading all these posts since I have a CVA, I have only fired it twice with 2 50 grain 777 pellets, it is rated for 150 grains, the most I would probably shoot is 120 grains anyway.
