    Default Kansas Highs and Lows

Well here goes, First trip to Kansas on a deer hunt and all i can say is it was nothing short of unreal. It was everything and more that i thought it would be.

The trip consisted of me and my dad. We left out on Thursday November 11 for our 16hr trip to North West Kansas. We made good time and arrived at 7am Friday morning which to my surprise it was still dark. (sweet i could sleep a little late in the mornings) We met up with our friend and land owner and unloaded the truck while watching two shooters walk up a draw. We then started hanging stands to get ready for the next days hunt. We finish up around 5pm and decide to go sit in a stand till dark just to see what all is up and moving.

Afternoon 1: Dad decided to go sit in the stand set at an old house place where he took a nice 11pt a couple years earlier. I decided to go sit on a creek bed that ran beside a big corn field about 300yds from his set. we got to our stands around 5:15pm and around 6pm the first deer of my trip steps out at 400yds. I look and he looks like a nice deer so i decide to hit my horns together to see if i can get him to look. Well it works and he comes in on a string to 25yds. He has a broken right main beam so i decided to pass him. After he walks by and gets into the brush i can finally size him up and thats when i realized i made a mistake by letting him walk. . With him in the field by himself i had no way to size him up and his body size made him look a little smaller than he actually was. Well after sinking in sorrow as the buck walks off i see that he is walking towards dads set. How cool would that be. Then about 30min later i get a call that he has shot a nice buck and will meet me at the house after dark. When i get there he said he shot a nice 11pt, I said i think in messed up by passing a nice buck. Then i ask him if he had a broke right main beam and he said yes why. I told him the story and he said "you passed that buck up" I said that after looking at all the horns of the land owner and listing to stories of busted up racks i decided to pass. I know a bonehead move but there are more out there. I hope. Guess this is a good payback for all the bucks he has put me on
230lb 11pt going to score in the 160's

Day 1: That morning i saw 8 shooter buck (after having my head recalibrated on horn size) 200 pheasants and 25 Rio longbeards. It was an awesome morning.
That after noon I saw a lot of deer and out of nowhere a 155"+ 10pt steps out of the brush on the edge of a creek bank. He was a little far but i felt comfortable with the shot and just as i released the arrow he steps into the creek and i miss him by a second. If he would have not stepped into the creek i would have smoked him. Just adds to the first day, it will be anther sleepless night. Two days and two huge bucks and i dont capitalize on either of them. My luck may be running out.

Day 2 the wind was blowing 60mph so we decided to stay in and help the farmer out around his land. We also went to hang another set where i had been seeing some good deer cross on a point.

Day 3 I was sitting on the new stand set and could see a huge buck tending a doe with 2 other shooter bucks and a smaller bucks were trying to get close to her. The larger buck wasn’t having any of it, he would chase them off. The doe finally worked her way to the creek bed where i was at hunting so i was hoping a buck would work its way to me. Well thats how it worked out, my buck steps out at 8yds and i am able to arrow him. I was beyond excited, he ran 100yds and folded up
He is a 250lb+ 8pt that will go in the 140's

Day 4 I was able to arrow a nice 160lb doe. The good Lord blessed us on this trip and i cant wait to go back.

Sorry for the long read but i wanted to share my trip. Talk about some highs and lows.

Thanks Im catching it for letting that deer walk but it couldnt have worked out any better. Im glad my dad got him. If you put them side by side mine will hold its own.

Shot mine with a Mathews Drenalin, goldtip arrows and the new Smoke Ramcat broadheads(which i am impressed with)

Dad shoots the new Z7, goldtip arrows and he tried out some Muzzys but he said he is going to stick with the Cabelas Lazer Supreme head. He loves those things.
