Climbing sticks are the only way to go. We have a set and they set up quicker than it takes to screw in steps into the tree, and they provide super stability if you get them tight. You won't be dissapointed with them!

When I used to use climbing sticks, I tied some branches along the sides, don't know if it mattered to the deer, but made me feel better!!!

I've got StrongBuilt climbing sticks that my brother uses with his hang-on stand. They seem to work great, but we use ratchet tie-downs along with the ropes, just for extra stability.
Cabelas here also. I am sure that there are better sticks out there but they work find for me and are cheaper costing.
Another nice point about the Swift-Tree climbing sticks is that the rugs are enclosed so your foot does not slip off the edge when climbing...Comes in handy when ascending or descending in the dark.
