Too many good bows to list, find someone that already hunts with stick and string, shoot their bow if it fits ya. It can get costly in the beginning.

this will be my second year of bow hunting. last summer i bought a Parker Trailblazer XP to get me started. my buddies were Parker fans so I decided to go that route. Boy was I happy! Talk about bang for your buck! A doe fell victim to my first bowkill last November. The Parker does work. Check it out. parkerbows.com

Go to your local Mathews archery shop and have them set you up. Let the pro's get your draw length and show you shooting form. Everything you do right early will make you a better archer.

If your just starting out, there is no reason to buy a brand new bow. I would look to find a bow that is 2 or 3 years old. I prefer the Hoyt line myself, but you can't go wrong with Mathews either. I would look around, shoot multiple bows and then go with the one that first of all fits you, and then how it feels, when you shoot. After the purchase, I would go to your local archery shop and have them set you up, I wouldn't reccomend a Gander Mtn. or Dick's Sporting Goods, you will be happier going to your local archery shop, they will be more hands on and will help you out alot.

If you want to but new, again to go to Gander Mtn., or Dicks Sporting Goods, go to your local shop.

Good luck, bowhunting is an awesome sport, I'm sure you will love it!

Hi there, I too got into bowhunting a couple years ago after 20+ years of gun hunting. I got a Mission X3. It is made by Mathews so get all of their quality without a couple bells and whistles, plus you cannot beat the price. If you get a chance go check out the Misiion line-up.

Id look into a Bear instinct if you can find one. They are a couple years old but a nice forgiving single cam bow and shoot plenty fast enough for shots out to 40 yards or so. I prefer Hoyt bows myself but they are expensive and as a newbie, unless your very talented right off the bat, you probably wouldnt benefit any from an $800 bow over a $350, the same goes for a matthews. Martin also makes a pretty darn nice bow for the money and so does Diamond if your willing to spend a little more than the Bears or Martins. The big thing is make sure it fits you, you will shoot a $100 bow that fits you better than an $800 that doesent. Take it to your local pro shop and have them set you up right, and dont always think that more money is better, there are a lot of items you can put on a bow that work just as well as one double the price.

One thing a lot of new bow hunters don't know is the life expectancy on bow strings. Heck, I didn't know until this year and I've been bowhunting for over 20 years. Most people say a string is only good for 2-3 years. Less if it is shot a lot. Remember this when buying a used bow, because if the string is old it will cost you about another 100.00 to replace it. If buying a used bow, I'd be looking for a Matthews Switchback that is 3-5 years old. I think they go for about 400.00 bare bow, but you'd need to look around.

For a new beginning bow the Bear Lights out looks like a good choice and goes under 400.00.

Best starter bow out there would be the trailblazer sidekicks or a diamond. Best bang for your buck, plus it's a complete setup!

That is one of the beauties of the Mission line-up. The Mission Jouney is basically the same thing as a Switchback and it has new string. PM Pendog (Andy) and ask him how he likes his.

Don't know what your budget is, but there are lots of ready-to-hunt set-ups you can get for under $400. Your best bet is to get out to a proshop and shoot some different brands. I wouldn't hesitate to own any of the brands mentioned above, but that's just me, some guys are pretty loyal to what they shoot. Also, dont be afraid to get a used bow. Lots of good trade-ins out there with very low usage. Hopefully you got a friend to help you along the way, and a good proshop in town. There is nothing finer than that first whack with a bow. Or the last for that matter....

I bet there a few family members of yours that have bows in the closet or know someone who does. If you can find one that can be adjusted to fit you then your way ahead of the game. Heck I bet there are guys in these forums that have bows to lend.
I say rattle up the family and friends and see what they will let you play around with. Oh, and don't turn down a recurve or longbow if offered.
