Called in a buck for the first time.

I went out yesterday and i brought the rattle bag with me which i never used. So i tried using them for the first time and 2 minutes after i stopped had a 4 pointer walk in. I just hit them together for 40 seconds or so lightly. Then i waited 1 minute and hit them kinda hard for about 3 minutes. I was wondering what is the best way to use rattle horn or bag. Also when to use it? I tried again today to use it a couple times and i got nothing no response.

I've been watching young bucks bang their heads together since 10-1. I dont use rattling till the rut gets in full swing.

I have called in a buck with a rattling bag three days in a row now, two days i called in the same buck, he just wouldnt come in bow range, but from what ive heard rattling is supposed to be a little more effective in the morning, although my experiences dont proove that, and ive been skeptical about rattling bags till this week, once the rut is on the bags seem to work just as good as horns, and are easier to take with you, but the fact that you got a buck to come in means you must of been doing somthing right

Nine...actually more like 99 times out of 100 you won't get anything to respond, but that one time it works, it is awesome...This is pretty true for most of the midwest...

Rattling works really well in Texas for some reason, but not so much in the mid west. Here, its about having the right buck in the right spot at the right time....good luck.

Rattling might work better in some places better b/c the sound travels farther however, it certianly is an effective tactic hear in SoIL. I have rattled/grunted in 5 bucks this year. 4 in the morning. and 1 last night.

I usually hit up a few grunts followed by and snort wheeze or two nad then hit'im together for about 45 sconds with varying intensity. Just imagine watching 2 bucks fighting. I follow up with snort wheeze and grunt sequence. Then put all that crap down and wait. You should be focused down wind b/c that is where most big bucks will come in from... they will circle if they have two.

Last night I had a cool encounter with a tweener buck. He has real good mass but not a real wide rack...probably 15 inches. He is a 2.5 year old so I don't want to shoot him. He was coming across the timber at about 4:05 looking for does and I was watching him in the binocs at about 75 -80 yards thru to brush....I hit the grunt but he kept going...so after he got out of sight I did the above sequence but abreiviated a bit. About 5 minutes later here he comes back down the ridge behind me tearing up trees. He sat there for about 10 minutes tearing up a tree and looking down into the bowl my tree was in trying to find those bucks. He was at my eye level at about 50 yards and I had the tree between me and him. Every once in a while I would get behind the tree and blow the grunt tube. He was looking hard for that buck but couldn't find him. After about 10-minutes he went back the way he came becouse I kept messing with him...he had leaves all stuck in his antlers.

The better your buck to doe ratio is where you hunt, the more effective rattling will be. Because of the battle to get a doe is greater. I have one property that I hunt that i can rattle in a deer about any day I want during the rut(most of them too small for what i'm looking for) and other properties where i might get 1 buck to respond the whole season. It's just an extra tool in your arsenal that could give you that advantadge you need. And it's great when you do and that buck comes tearing in. Good Luck with it!
