Zone 10 in Sask.

Anybody know some good pastures to walk in to-the guys that were supposed to have our mulie hunt planned might not go now. I like to get away from other hunters as much as I can.

If you like to walk you will like zone 10. There are some huge ranches in the sandhills. Three ranches you can check out are the Block Ranch ( Neil Block) the Watson Ranch ( Neil Watson) these would both be in the Abbey phone book. The third ranch is the Mcknight ranch I think. I am not sure of the contact on that one. There is also the Millie Community Pasture which was open to rifle hunting on Nov. 1. These ranches are anywhere from 30 to 50 sections of sandhills each. I am sure you can walk to your hearts content in there. I have hunted the Block ranch once for coyotes and it is big country out there. This photo is of a buck in the Millie Community pasture. It was taken just this morning.

Do you know who owns the old Elkink ranch by Anbbey it runs just north of the Millie-do you have directions to the Millie pasture.

The Elkink ranch is the one listed as the Mcknight ranch on my most current map but it is a 1999 map. To get to the Millie from Swift Current you would go west on thwe #1 for a few miles then take the 32 highway towards Leader to the junction of the 332. Take the 332 highway to Hazlet. The 332 ends at Hazlet but keep going on the grid straight west until you hit a T intersection (9-10 Miles). At the intersection turn south and go 2 miles. Then turn west again and go a mile and you will hit the pasture headquarters. No one lives there any more but you can access some trails from there. To get to where the buildings are for the Mcknight ranch Go to the same T intersection but turn North and go about 4 miles then 5 miles West. Hope this helps.

Is there a road goes straight south from Abbbey to the headquarters-it was 12 years ago I hunted there and we drove out in the dark from town so a bit shaky on the directions from town-the old Elkin was pretty good hunting it seemed like the bucks were rutting alot harder up there then down in the Millie. Another funny thing was we got a couple down in the millie south end and they were in way poorer condition than the Elkink deer-bodyfat wise-I wonder if the grass got stronger a bit furthur north.

There is a road that runs straight south of Abbey. It will run you into the grid running west from Hazlet. You would still have to go west 4 miles until you hit the T interesction. I think you can go straight west at the south end of Abbey for 4 miles and you will hit the grid that will run you straight down to where the millie and Mcknight ( old Elkink) ranch are. It is the grid that runs down to Tompkins. The deer I saw in the millie this weekend were in good shape. They were coming out of the crop land in zone 9 back into the pasture. If you can get back in the old Elkink ranch or Block ranch you will likely see less vehicle traffic and have much more room to roam. The good part of the millie in zone 10 isn't very wide (only a mile or two and does have a few trails through it. Being public land it will likely get a fair bit of traffic. It has the boundary trail ( splits zone 9 and 10 ) running through it and there is quite a bit of gas activity on the west side. Good luck.

Thanks Cam you might as well just come out and spend a day with us-I'm going to try and get rooms in the Abbey Hotel. Send me your number in case we get lucky-I'm going to try and hunt the Elkink as I don't like crowds at all. Saw two mulies on my place yesrewrday first in my lifetime. When I hunted rthere it was the deer on the south end were thin.

Hope you made out well. We have lot's of good memories of hunting the Minor (Block), Elkink and Millie ranches back in 84 and 88. Does anyone remember the 3 day seasons? It was like a war zone in some areas but there were tons of deer and you could get away from the crowds in some of the fairly remote places, especially on Block's. There were tons of deer back then but with such a short season and univ. commitments we usually shot the the first mature buck we saw.

Did you check out the west side coming in from Fox Valley? I've always meant to but haven't been drawn in 10 since.

Back in those days you had to check out the Cabri bar on opening evening and do the "truck tour". It seemed like most of the monsters were coming out of the river hills to the north not the sand hills.

Too bad I haven't checked in here lately, I could have given you a few locations to check.

Well I laid this old campaigner low on Thursday A'M he doesn't net much but there's 190 inches of bone there. Was heading out to still hunt and saw him bedded off the trail-took a good rest and double lunged him when he got up. Saw some good ytoung bucks later in the day while filling my anterless tags. I almost thought for a sec he was the buck Cam had taken a pic of.

Awesome Job there! I was thinking tonight when you return that pictures would be posted. Thats a great buck. The background country reminds me of zone 6 when I got drawn two years ago. I can't wait to get drawn again, its always nice to hunt a new area other than your regular "stompin" grounds.

I was drawn for zone 10 Mulies this year, just couldn't go as work got in the way. would have had only a couple hours on opening day before having to catch a plane in Stoon. It was the same story for my two buddies who got drawn with me, drive 4 hrs south to hunt for 2 and drive 2 1/2 back to get on the plane.Oh well maybe next time we'll get to go.
