Canadian Wolf Hunting

Hi.
When deer hunting we see the od Timber wolf but alot of sign and hear them howl every day. My forum is this.
What success have others had hunting wolves?
What strategies do you use? Calling/Baiting ect.

Wolves will come intoi a predator call if they are close-the thing with them is they might not be tomorrow where you saw them today-they clean up a kill so quick not sure if baiting will work. They hate dogs but not sure if using Fluffy for bait is very ethical lol.

I use a predator call for them and any sort of carcass if I am sitting in one spot for a while. My uncle is a trapper so I have a lot to choose from.

We have a few shooting houses as we call them. Just small closed in white houses with windows in all 4 walls. Mainly because we hunt them in February or March, which can be quite chilly. Have a couple candles in there for heat to keep the chill off.

Saw a bunch in deer season too, but I was in a township which bordered Algonquin Provincial Park, so I could not shoot them. It was very tempting to give them a taste of the .300 WSM, but I held back.

Tons of tracks and sign, the deer population seemed to be down during this season and the timberwolf population way up.

for the replies .I do some trapping myself I think Ill use beaver and tie them down when it gets -30 and the snow a little deeper I'll break a skidoo trail leading to the bait. and see if I can get things to happen. mabe hungry and cold will help.

When using a call. Can you call to much and If you get busted do you think you can make a wolf or coyote call shy???

I've heard of this being done, I think it was in Montana but I'm not entirely sure. The "coyote dogs" were trained to make a fast, big circle through coyote territory and return to their owners location. The coyotes would identify the dog as an intruder in their territory and be hot on their trail with the intent of running them out of the countryside.

just had to add. We used to have a farm dog that was really stupid. In the mornings he would go out into the field behind the house, hot on the trail of a coyote of fox that came close the night before. When I would see him take off, I would go downstairs, get my custom rifle, crank the scope up , slide open the kitchen window , put a pillow down for a rest , and wait a minute. Thats about how long it took for him to come tearing back over the hill with a coyote (usually) hot on his trail. the yote would pull up and turn sideways looking at the dog as it ran to the house. Pull the trigger and pick up the yote. Got 20+ that year, most had some mange, but got a few nice pelts. maybe the dog wasn't so stupid.

Not sure why...but on 3 seperate cougar hunts we had wolves come in while the dogs had a cat in the tree.

wolves hate dogs. we lost our cougar hounds overnight and found them the next day. by the look of the wolf sign they would have been dead that day. i talked to a friend here that said they called in 2 (killed 1) at different locations, just howling with their mouths. i would try a coyote howler call....and kill every one you see.

Oh ya, wolves sure do hate dogs. This past summer 3 big timberwolves attacked and killed a nice 9 pointer right in front of my friends' kitchen window, he saw the whole thing. This is the land where I hunt. Anyway he has a border collie, she went absolutely ballistic and took off after the wolves, luckily she didn't get attacked.

Iv'e seen this. I few winters ago a wolf chased a deer down our lane and it jumped in with our horses. At that time we had a big Billy goat. That goat would rear up and strike straight at the wolf. by the time I got out there with the gun. The wolf spotted me and bolted.
