    Default Passport info??

Am I required to get a passport to fly into Saskatoon for a guided bear hunt that I will be going on this May?? I checked the price of those passports and dang...its gonna be near a hundred bucks and a 6 week wait at least. I mean I don't have the problems forking the bucks out for the hunt, but if it is not needed...why buy it.
    Thanks

It is suggested but as far as I know not yet required. When I went to the states last year I just took as much photo id as possible with me and my birth certificate. Didn't need a passport.

    yup -- what he said

I have a passport --since I travel every year, I would rather be safe than get held up for hours for not having the right documents

    Ken,

Double check with the Border Patrol. I believe a law just passed this last Monday requiring that fliers must have one. I saw it on Channel 7 news in Watertown. people were lined up to get their passports. Drivers are not required to have one yet.

    That's right
Passports are not compulsory yet, but they would like you to have one.
Just bring all the ID you have (especially photo ID and birth certificate)

When I go to the states I have a harder time getting home into my own country than I do when I cross the border into the US.

Last time I went down the US border official asked: Where are you going? Northern Wisconsin... and How long are you gonna be? Two weeks. "Okay bud, drive safe! "

I was pretty surprised, but on the way home, they asked me about 200 questions, made me pull over and rip everything out of my 2-door Cavalier that I had jammed to the rafters with stuff! Made a big hassle with the bow, asked me about the $1200 of stereo equipment installed in my trunk.....

I must say though, the look on the young lady's face when she opened my trunk was hilarious. Martin gave me a deer target to practice with, and it was in the trunk as well. She must have jumped back 5 feet LOL.

All the times I've gone I just showed them my drivers license and my birth certificate. They didn't give me any hassle about that. Probably only gave me a hassle coming back into Canada because I'm young.

Married to a Canadian who lives/works in the states: We have done some checking: You will be fine without a passport:
    Here is the law:

Documents You Will Need to Enter the United States
Important Note: The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will soon require all travelers to and from the Americas, the Caribbean, and Bermuda to have a passport or other accepted form of documentation to enter or reenter the United States. The program will be rolled out in phases. The proposed timeline is as follows:

    * As of January 23, 2007, ALL persons*, including U.S. citizens, traveling by "AIR" between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.
    * As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons*, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

*Lawful permanent residents (LPRs), refugees, and asylees will continue to be able to use their Alien Registration Card (Form I-551), issued by DHS, or other valid evidence of permanent residence status or refugee or asylee status to apply for entry to the United States.

Travel Documents for U.S. Citizens Under WHTI
Under the proposed implementation plan, the following documents will be acceptable to fulfill document requirements:

    * U.S. Passport: U.S. citizens may present a valid U.S. passport when traveling via air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda, and may also use a U.S. passport when traveling via sea and land borders (including ferry crossings).
    * The Passport Card (also referred to as the PASS Card): This limited-use passport in card format is currently under development and will be available for use for travel only via land or sea (including ferries) between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. Similar in size to a credit card, it will fit easily into a wallet.
    * DOS and DHS also anticipate that the following documents will continue to be acceptable for their current travel uses under WHTI: SENTRI, NEXUS, FAST, and the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document. As proposed, members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty traveling on orders will continue to be exempt from the passport requirement.

Until this requirement is in effect as noted above, U.S. citizens are currently exempt from the requirement to show a passport unless they are returning to the U.S. from outside the Western Hemisphere (Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia). However, it is highly recommended that you be prepared to present documentation such as valid U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, or naturalization certificate to avoid delays.

U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) must provide one of the following:

    * I-551, Permanent Resident Card ("Green Card")
    * Machine-Readable Immigrant Visa endorsed with a CBP Admission Stamp
    * Temporary Residence Stamp (ADIT stamp) contained in a passport or on Form I-94
    * Valid Reentry Permit
    * Unexpired Immigrant Visa

    Visitors/Non-immigrants must provide:

    * Generally, a valid unexpired passport and visa. (However, certain people may require specific supporting documentation such as an employment petition, student authorization, or approval notice.)
    * Citizens of countries authorized to participate in the Visa Waiver Program are required to present an unexpired machine-readable passport. (For additional information refer to the State Department. ( U.S Department of State )
    * Mexicans may provide a valid DSP-150 (BCC) in lieu of a valid passport and visa
    * Generally, Canadian Nationals must show ID but are exempt from passport and visa requirements. However presentation of a Canadian passport, birth certificate, Naturalization certificate or other supporting documentation will facilitate the inspection and is strongly encouraged.
    * Nationals of countries authorized to participate in the Visa Waiver Program are required to present an unexpired passport.

Thanks birddog. I just spoke to Border Patrol and they state that I do need one as of the end of this month. Guess I will get one to be sure though. Would hate to miss my trip or be a day late because of a hold up at customs.

I would have just caused a scene and started yelling "Hey Birddog told me it was cool, so relax and get off my back....talk to him if you don't believe me. No I don't know his real name...thats for you to find out..but his nickname is birddog for the 5th time!"

That would be sure to get me in....(in somewhere anyhow)
