    Default another grunt question?

When you are grunting, do you use short or long grunts? like 1 second long or 3 seconds long? What has been the best/ Same with the doe bleat. Long or short?

I MIX MY GRUNTS UP A LITTLE.I USUALLY MAKE MY BLEATS A LITTLE LONGER THOUGH.I BELIEVE WHEN BUCKS ARE CHASING DOES THEY WILL USE SHORTER GRUNTS,AND WHEN THEY ARE LOOKING FOR DOES THEY WILL USE LONGER ONES.THATS JUST WHAT I'VE SEEN OVER THE YEARS.

Early season (prerut) bleats ....short bleats, monotone. 2 or 3 spaced 7 to 10 seconds apart.
closer to rut, rut and post rut bleats (secondary rut) ...a little longer, with tone dropping off at the end. series of 2 or 3, 4 to 7 seconds apart.

Buck grunts ... tough for me to say for you whitetail guys, because blacktails are not as aggressive.

prerut grunts for blacktails ... short, not too loud, series of 2 or 3, spaced 4 to 7 seconds apart
rut and postrut (secondary rut) .... rapid shorts, (series of 4 to 6) mixed with longs, loud and softer tones. (mixed bag)

Buck grunts I usually use 3-4 short grunts about a second between each grunt. As for the duration, never have timed them, but would guess the grunts to be no longer than one and a half seconds long when using a sequence of 3 or 4.

Only doe call I really use is the can call.

During the rut I have heard bucks grunt with every step following on the trail of a doe. Just a very short snappy erp erp erp, have tried to imitate that succesfully a few times during the rifle season, 3rd week of November here.

Have also heard on many occasions just one grunt and had the does head towards the location the grunt came from and have also succesffuly used that tactic on a few occasions. That is a longer drawn out really deep low grunt, duration maybe two and a half seconds.

I mix up my calling quite a bit and try to keep up with what I try and what is and is not working.
