    Default Spotted Fawn in January????????

A friend of mine called me this morning at work, and told me he was on the side of the road, looking at a fresh, road killed deer. He said it was a fawn, about 30 pounds, in full spots. If anyone else had told me this I would be skeptical, but coming from him I know with 100% certainty that this is true. Our fawns here are normally out of spots by the end of August, or early September. Wouldn't this deer have had to be born inOct./Nov. if not later to still be in full spots?

Just like to hear your thoughts on this. I have been thinking about it all day.

It could very well be that way John, it definetly wouldn't be this year's fawn yet, so it must have been a late bloomer. Could have had a growing problem too...

I figure a late drop too, but doesn't that mean the mother would have been bred a good 3 to 4 months late too? Our rut is around the 1st to 2nd week of November. Wouldn't this mean that the fawns mother was bred in February or March?

I would venture to say very close to those dates,,, She must have been or still is a very exceptional doe.... and as you know a buck will breed even if the rut is over if a doe is in heat,, and obviously this doe had to be....

Still very unusual tho,,, I can see where this would confuse the heck out of ya....

It might be a good thing that little one didn't make it. If winter is bad in your area then it would have been hard for him to survive.

Sometimes there are doe bred during a 2nd estorus in late Dec, and a 3rd estorus cycle but that is normally during Jan.
But you normally do not see that unless there is a heavy doe ratio...
The mother must of been a fawn herself during the late summer 05.
    (???)

Definitely sounds like a real late drop to me. Think about it. The momma doe probably gave birth and then was bred.
