does anyone have any tips on how to not get so much hair on your deer meat when you skin it?
Ive heard that if you hang the deer by the head/antlers, and skin from the neck down going with the grain of the hair, you dont pull as many out.
I always hang mine by the back legs like I was taught
It's kind of hard to explain, because it's one of those "gotta show ya" hands-on sort of things.
The first thing is to have a very sharp knife. That is half the battle.
Most of it is also in the way you hold the hide with one hand, and skinning knife in the other, without ever touching the meat with the hand you hold the hide with.
Keeping the edges of your cuts where the hairs are from touching the meat also.
Also, when making your pre-skinning cuts up the neck, legs and neck, be sure to cut from the inside of the hide out, not from the outside in. I've seen guys make cuts like that and it makes me cringe..LOL..because what your doing is cutting the hairs off, thus creating more loose hairs that will end up on the meat while skinning. The knife tip goes under the skin first, before the cut.
Also, while skinning, your hide holding hand should be holding the hide, grasped from the hair side, so you can get a good grip and it also keeps that hand away from the meat.
When your all done skinning, pick any hairs off by hand. A rag in one hand helps with this process, so you can keep wiping your fingers.
Remember also, that if you take your deer to the butcher for processing, that they are getting paid to cut and wrap your meat, "not" to clean the hair off. So don't be too surprised if you find hair in the burger and roasts, etc, after a poor skinning and handling job
That is one thing that I think I can boost about. All of the meat-cutters I have ever dealt with, have always commented on my hair-free deer, when I bring them in. In fact, our meat cutter in town here will always take my deer because of it, if he's full up and turning all the other hunters away. I even won a trophy once, from a butcher, for the best dressed wild-game
I also hang my deer from the head, and skin toward the tail-end, unless I am caping it out for the taxidermist.![]()
The easiest way to get rid of hair on the carcass is to take a small butane torch and have the flame real low. Go over the whole thing and you will have a hair free carcass! Simple and fast!![]()

This is exactly how we do it to. Not the best smell but it comes out hair free when done....
You dont really need to turn it down either just dont hold over same spot for long, Just enough to burn the hair off.
Keep it moving and youll be fine.
we do the torch thing to! works pretty well except for the smell!LOL
burn it off...
So much for the fine art of skinning a deer ...LMBO
