PA Entries in B&C

Sorry Strut but after your last thread about the lack of any entries in B&C from PA in the last issue of Fair Chase magazine, I couldn't help but look for some in the Summer issue that I received the other day. This time there are 3 entries listed from PA. 1 typical and 2 non-typicals. Could be worse. That's 2 more than there are from MS.

Were there any entries from Tennessee Al? According to our game officials here, their management plan is growing older age class bucks than what KY is seeing, I just don't believe it.

Looks like just one for this quarter William but it sure was a good one. A big NT killed by Nelson Cannon in Haywood Co. that scored 234 5/8 gross and 227 2/8 net.

Thanks for posting that Al. There are some good deer killed down that way every year, bet it probably was taken somewhere around the Hatchie River bottoms down around Hardeman county. Kind of surprsing that Haywood county has NOT been in the states "liberal" units, typically more deer killed there than here yet we were in a liberal unit this past year. Sure wish the game officials here would make some more aggressive changes other than allowing ridiculous numbers of antlerless deer to be taken in some areas. Killing off too many does and removing buttons and young antlerless bucks is not helping this area.

How does TN determine deer populations? Do they actually go out and count, or is it somehow based on harvest numbers. If it's harvest numbers, the census data will lag 1 - 3 years behind the actual population numbers.

Harvest data, and I realize that Mike. There have been gun doe hunts implemented for more and more areas of the state over recent years to promote doe harvests, and a few years ago they put liberal limits in place for some areas allowing up to 3 antlerless deer(any deer with no more than 3 inches of antler growth) to be taken a day for the duration of the seasons. This county on the last deer density estimate I have been able to find was at 15 deer per sq mile, clearly should not be put in the liberal limits. Doe harvests went from being about a third of the total harvest in 2006-2007 to exceeding the number of bucks harvested by a over a hundred deer in last years harvest data numbers. Statewide since the liberal limits have been started, the first year the numbers went up with understandably more deer killed as a result of more does harvested. The following year, numbers dropped off a bit and dropped off again last year. At this point I have yet to hear if our county will have liberal limits again this year, but would expect that the overall harvest number will take a hit from last year even if the liberal limits are still in place.
