Clam shelter/sled, Laser hand auger, jigging rods, various colors and weights of jigs, Vexilar FL8 flasher, small porpane heater, ice creepers for boots, skimmer, tip up or two. Should be a great start.

Well, there ya have it.. a few of the basics.
Sounds worse than muzzleloading or archery set-ups.
don't foget the 4=wheeler !! .....we made a nice front and back boxes on ours that carries everything we need....and of course you need snacks....and yes a gas powered auger is a must to have...don't forget a pair of those long fish hook remover pliers....if you get one of those water wolfs (pike ) on the line you wished you had a pair.
A rag or cloth comes in handy to wash & dry your hands after cleaning & handling all the fish you catch. With that said a knife & nail clippers come in handy for cleaning fish & snipping line to retie hooks, leaders etc...For slow days in a warm shelter a good book is a must.Maybe even a little portable radio.

I think I've been duped. For some reason Vexilar and 4 wheelers doesn't come to mind when I think of the words basic gear.

Uh, yep, you've been duped! How can you bear to be out there without? Advanced gear includes the satelite TV and Lay Z Boy
augar, ice rods & reels, a selection of ice jigs, wax worms, small minows, lead weight for setting depth, ice skimmer, tip-ups, sled to carry everything, depth finder(to me this is basic), I dont use the velexar one. The depth finder from the front of my boat works great! I see fish and my lure with the bait on. There are so many things you can take ice fishing, go here>>> ICE FISHING.
What pare of Michigan are you in Chevelle? Im in Owosso...maybe I could meet you somewhere this winter and show you the ropes on ice fishing...i got alot of gear.
Bone fashoined into fish hook, gut for line, any hunk of meat for bait.....
Hey! You said basic... LOL
Umm just do what the other folks said. You'll be ok.
Good Luck!
