Nope, never any formal training. The closest I've had to any professional training came when I spent a week with the National Civilian Pistol Team when I made the squad back in '95.
Some of the best training or gun handling skills can be learned while participating in local handgun competitions. Precision shooting such as Bullseye matches will teach you proper sight alignment and get you to know how a shot should break. Action matches like USPSA or IDPA will ingrain fast reaction to different situations and will teach you how to clear maufunctions properly. Above all, these disiplines will teach safe gun handling skills.

No, I've never had any training like this, but I'd love to. In fact, I guess the only formal training I've ever had was during my concealed carry course.
Luckily for me, I've got some great friends who have helped me tremendously.

Unfortunatley, now we are starting to understand what the second quote means, and... what the first quote says about us.
I was trained by an old soldier/sheriff when I was young. He taught me to target shoot first. Then I learned how to move, to draw, and shoot quickly. Then I learned to shoot aerial targets thrown by hand. I shot handgun silhouettes for years. I helped run the combat course at the club and have taught lots of people to shoot handguns effectively. I spent some time in the Army with an Air Cav unit too. So I learned to fight and shoot. The best of both worlds. In this day and age people like my old friend, who is long dead now, would be considered lunatic fringe types but were considered fine capable men then. Most of the "defense pistol" games sacrifice tactical advantage for safety and you learn things that will get you killed in a fight. I would definitely take a tactical course. One that is geared towards warfare. Soldiers are trained differently. The training is invaluable.

Thats where I learned to shoot. I was shooting in competition for about 8 years. I was just about to get another gun for the other matches I wanted to participate in. But things never worked out. I would like to get back into it again one day, still have all the equipment for re-loading too.
