44. mag/357mag

I was wanting to know witch gun would be a better deer gun im leaning towards the 44mag and about how much will one cost me? And how accurate are each out to 50yds

.44 is a better choice for deer. accuracy depends on the make as does the price. A ruger redhawk will go for 450 or so. Smith & Wesson has a hunter model but I'm not sure of the price I've heard great things about it to.

A 357 has more than enough punch with the right bullet selection. That being said, I would opt for the 44mag myself. I own a Super Blackhawk Hunter in 44mag but I want to pick up a 357mag Taurus Tracker in the future for up close and personal whitetail hunting.

What about a 357Sig.? It has about the same energy as the magunm, and a lot of the hunters around here use the 357 mag. for hunting deer around here.

Is the 357Sig accurate enough? I'd like to get something in a simi for self defence and hunting,

I think the problem, .357 sig, might be the velocity drop off with distance coupled with loss of energy. Great bullet for up close and personal work, though.

.44 mag for sure. I reccomend getting a Super Blackhawk also. Do a $20.00 trigger job on it and it will be ready. Maybe even add a scope. My buddy has a Weaver 2x on his. Very nice setup. He has under $700.00 into it.

I have a couple of .357's, and I deer hunt with them occasionaly, but i would say go for a .44 for a strictly huntin gun.

I was thinking about something for shots at 25 yards or less. Would that be close enough?

The ballistics on that bullet within that range are well qualified for a man size target. But, the way a guy shoots a deer and employs a defense pistol are a little different. With the pistol, more than one round is usually fired.

Theoretically, one .357 sig round should prove fatal if the vitals are hit. How long will it take for the deer to go down? I really couldn't tell you.

I do know there is a contingent of hunters that do use SA pistols for big game, i.e., hogs, deer, etc. I've only heard of the .40, .45, and 10mm used.

The .44mag is IMO the better of the two calibers. It's much more versatile.

The problem with the .357Sig is the limited bulled selection. That cartridge was designed aroud 125gr bullets. IMO that is way too light for any serious hunting.

I own a Smith & Wesson 44 mag with a 6 in barrel and that thing is a beast. I would put that gun against any 357 around.
