Default Thinking about getting a GPS unit.

I am hunting new land this year, and i am thinking about going to two other states, looking for feedback on types of gps, using them, just any info in general.

Hi Andy! I have a Garmin Vista, it works great! I have 2/3's of the state of Pennsylvania in topo maps in it. The color unit would be nice, but I didnt want to spend $350+ for color. The normal screen is just fine! If you get the MapSource CD, you will have the entire USA with topos, so you can load at any time the maps you want. I save the maps I want on my PC and onto a 3.5" floppy. This way if I know say I am going to Delaware for vacation I can just load it up. Then when I get back home I just reload the PA maps again. My unit has the electronic compass, but I dont use it very often due to the fact it draws a lot of power on the batteries. I was surprised it worked very well with tree cover, but as with most GPS units you will loose the signal from time to time in heavy forest. They are great to mark tree stands, to get to and from with no markers to lead anybody to your hunting area! I know if I ever need another unit, Ill get a Garmin Vista, maybe the Vista C. Now I bought mine on-line from Walmart.com. At the time it was $208, not sure what they are now. I know where you work, so I dont know if you can get them any cheaper there or not. Only other accessories I have is the power cord for my vehicle, and the carrying case.

I have a Garmin Etrex unit, the basic model which sells for about $110 in most stores. I only needed a model to get me from point A to point B, the unit does not show any topo graphics at all. I have a bunch of topo maps of my own that I like to use in the field. I have owned it for about 5 years now and it has never failed me. When the batteries get low it will give you a false reading, backup batteries are a must......AA size

I have a Garmin Etrex Vista. I have used it mostly for atving so I can get back to the truck. Have mapped a few trails in the past also with the mapping software. Honestly, if I had it to over again I'd buy the Magellan Meridian Gold with external memory.

I have the cheaper yellow Etrax also. They are under $100.00 now and are perfect for marking hunting spots and geocaching.
