    Default Need air rifle

I am looking to buy an air rifle strong enough to put a whoopin' on some crows. I do not want CO2 as they are a pain. I want the spring/cocking action type. What do you all suggest?

For crows your gonna need a good pellet! As for guns can't go wrong with RWS, they are pricey but well worth it. Since you are after crows, it might be wise to step it up to the .22 pellet. Its a bit slower but will pack more whallop! Is there a reason why you going to use a pellet gun? Houses I assume?

I'm not an expert, but I would think to get a pellet rifle strong enough to effectively kill a crow you would have to spend some fairly serious cash. If shooting a firearm isn't an issue I would get a 22lr.

I shoot a Brolin M21 which is a clone of the RWS 48. It shoots 1000 fps, is a side cocker, and will definately put the hurting on a small critter if in range. You will not have a long range, I would think under 40 yards for a crow, but it will do the job. Check out some reviews.

Thats right..houses. This is at my residence. They are destroying everything. My longest shot would be max of 30 yards. Most of them under 20.

Beeman has several model under the $150.00 range.
From 640 fps to 850fps. The hunter 220 is 1000 fps.
Gamo also has several models running upwards of $200. Remington also just put out the Summit model at 1000 fps. at a price of 200.00

Be aware though, these guns are just as loud as a .22
So if your trying to keep a low profile.... you may want to go with the Crosman 760 . especially if your shots are close. It's a 750 fps gun for about 59.00.

    Good Luck Bo ...

I just bought an RWS Model 34 for my son. Single barrel coc-k with 33# effort shoots a .177 pellet at 1,000fps. While sighting it in I took out a blackbird in my garden at around 35 yards.

I was surprised at the recoil, much more than a .22, but I'd have to disagree with Bo, my RWS is a lot quieter than the crack of a .22.

I will be scoping it soon as the iron sights on that gun don't cut it with me (just like Strut10 said ).

With a $20 rebate from Cabelas, it being on sale, I got that gun for $179.

My son Joe, you may know him as Squirrelhunter91 on these BB has a Winchester 1000X that he might be looking to part with. He has several air guns. It is 1000fps and he taken all kinds of critters with it. I'll ask him about it.
But for crows, I'd say a minimum of 1000fps.

The RWS 34 is a very good gun for the money. It's rated at 1000 fps. With a decent scope, you should have no problem hitting crows to 50 - 75 yards. Killing them, on the other hand, I do not know about. The 34 will give you enough punch for adequate penetration (probably pass-through) But I'm not sure how much success you'll have anchoring a crow on the spot.

Just a thought. You pop a crow within city limits then you have to go out and get it and you could be spotted. Remember if you get busted it is a Federal offense because they are listed as a Migratory bird. I'm assuming your employment would frown on that unless you have a get out of jail free card. So here is a suggestion. Get a decent daisy or crossman pump up BB gun at Walmart that shoots 177 pellets. My crossman 760 will kill a squirrel at 30 yards. Anyway a 177 pellet may not knock the bird down but it will fly off and die elsewhere. Out of sight, out of mind.

As Ranger Clay stated be careful about the laws. here in Kentucky there is a season on Crows. If they are destroying your crops or property contact your local CO he may be able to give you a permit to make it legal for you to shoot them. Also check with your local police dept. about any ordinance they may have. Hope all goes well, they are a pest.

    Woodnwater...
There is a season on them in NY starting September 1st. I should have went into more detail about the season dates to begin with I guess, but for the sake of making this a shorter post, I just didn't put it in place. I appreciate the words of warning, but am very familiar with the laws governing the taking of crows, and those on the forum know that I am a very ethical hunter and also very "law abiding ". The season opens on Sept 1st and they can be hunted on Fridays, Sat, Sun and Mon...only. I have contacted my local En Con officer and he saw the damage to our garden and the flock of crows hovering in the trees above and said he would issue a permit if I did not want to wait until hunting season. I had told him since our garden was ruined, it didn't matter and I really wasn't concerned for this year, but hoped by next year I could alleviate the problem a bit. It is legal where I am at to discharge a rifle, but due to houses in the vicinity (not anywhere near the line of fire, but closer than I think they would want me shooting), I choose not to use anything bigger than a pellet rifle, or arrow with a judo point. Although I believe it is legal, I do need to double check with him to make sure these are permissable, but have not been able to contact him yet as we have been playing phone tag. I will probably speak to him either today or tomorrow as he usually stops by my place of employement everyday when he is working. Thanks for all the great responses.
