I'm going on my first elk hunt this year in Montana and was interested in a bipod for my gun. Any suggestions or advise? Do they help that much or am i wasting more of my money?

Myself, I don't like bipods. They are way too heavy to tote around on an elk hunt. A good set of shooting sticks are more in order. They are a lot more versitile than the bipod.
Do you have to carry them around(sticks)? I'd like the idea of the bipod attaching to the gun but I didn't realize they were heavy.
Yes, a bipod adds a lot of weight. I built up a Ruger M77. I put a bipod on the rifle for Deer and Yotes. It added a lot of weight. Would it be impossible to tote around, nope. However, you would be much better off (walking up and down mountain sides) To tote a set of sticks. They are much lighter and will typically allow you to take standing or sitting shots.
I would definatley shed the bipod if I went looking for elk.
I have hunted Wyoming colorado and utah all my life and can honestly say the shorter version of Stoney points shooting stix has replaced my harris bipods. If you feel you need to have something connected to the gun a company from Montana has a product called the snipe pod. Might be woth a look. I can tell you they are lighter than a bipod but I'll only carry stix onto my mountains anymore.
I have a harris bipods on tow of my rifles and absolutly love them. I hunt in real open country most the time so it nice to always have an instant rest with me. Shoot stick would work great as well if you don't mind having to carry them.
I dont think that they are a waste of money, they are very helpful for long range shots, and you get a lot of theose elk hunting so I would suggest one.

I put a set of Harris' on my rifle when I go groundhogging.I think they're awesome but they do add a bit of weight and if you're going to be doing alot of spot & stalking, you'd probably notice the extra weight.
