how big is he? I started shooting 20 gauge slugs when I was 9, and I can't imagine that either of those rifles would have the kick of a slug. I was always a pretty big kid though. Let him go shoot a .243 or a similiar caliber and see if he can handle it. I'm sure he will be able to with no problem.
Hes a pretty wimpy lil boy but ill give em a chance. I have an OLD 30-30 but it was my dads and hes past away i might try him on that and see if he has a problem. Thanks for your response though.I dont feel comfertable with him shootin it though.Oh and he weighs about 86 i guess i dont know for sure.

No, a 308 or 243 shouldn't be too big for an average 11 year old, but it is too big for him to start out with. ALWAYS start a new shooter out with an air rifle or a 22 rimfire, then work up to the larger calibers gradually.
The very first trigger I ever pulled was on a 12 gauge shotgun when I was about 6. Certain people in my family thought it would be funny, and for them I guess it was, but I'm still living with the slight crook where it broke my nose.
Off the Porch and lovin' it...

Try a 7mm-.08..............it's a sized down version of the mag and mom loves it.
lol nice quote
Texan i know how you fell on the starting out with a large caliber i aint funny is it man.
I just want his first deer hunting experience to be a good one I myself didnt get to start hunting until i was 11 and i am 17 now and i wan to take him out and have a good time i will check out the 7-08 though if its anything like the 7mm mag then no way!!!
I hav also thought about maybe .410 or 20 ga. slugs????
OH in response to the 7mm-08 don t that kick worse then a .243???
Check out this recoil table http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm It's the easiest one to read that I've seen and from my limited experience is very accurate.
I have a 243, 25-06, 30-30 and a 7mm-08 and the differences seem to be right on the money to what this chart shows.
I would probibly go with the 243 or 30-30 depending on which one he is able to control better.
Luke 22:36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
Was Jesus really a passivist?
Man that chart was amazing it is its right on the money to what i know i really aprecciate that alot for telling me where that is man. Thank you brother.
Oh and how do you make your Location show up on the post??
Go to your control panel(User CP) then look on the left and click on edit profile. Scroll down and you will see place for location. After getting the location in, submit or save the changes.
And no a .243 is not too much gun for an average size 11 year old. My oldest daughter, 11 now, has been shooting a .243 since she was 7 or 8.
wtnhunt
I agree with the .243, great gun and perfect for a young hunter![]()
