It's amazing just what a small food plot can accomplish. Small food plots hidden deep in cover make great staging areas that deer will visit just prior to going to larger feeding plots at night. Five to 6 hours of sunlight is plenty of sunlight for your plants. The most important part of a small plot is choosing the proper plants. When I make small hunting plots like that I like to use the cereal grains--wheat and rye--they handle browsing pressure really well and are highly attractive.

We planted about maybe an acre food plot (no bigger) on the top of a ridge in the Loose Hills in IA. This is probably the highest point around and we planted it in vigin soil, never been touched. We bulldozed the ridge and disked it well. This year we sprayed it and all and then planted Tecomate Chicory, Tecomate Alfalfa, and a little Imperial Clover. We mixed it all together and it turned out great! This stuff (except the clover) is supposed to be drought tollerant and it definately was, we didn't have a really wet year this year and all the native plants were a little brown but the food plot plants looked like they had been watered everyday! Wonder what will happen when we get a good year of rain? anyway, the only thing I would do next time is spray, wait 2 weeks, disk it, wait 2 more weeks to let the weed seed to start to grow and then spray it again, this will eliminate most of the weeds. We have had some weed problems but nothing too big.

Oh ya this stuff comes back somewhere for 3-5 years depending on how you take care of it, so do a good job planting it and such and you'll have a great plot for years!!!!!

The deer were eating it some but when late Sep. came around they are mowing it down!!!!! They love it!!!!!!!
