Default When is the plant dead?

QDMAworks4me and I were discussing Round Up today. We were both curious, when you spray Round Up, when is the plant officially dead? Do you have to wait till it turns brown before one tills it under? How long after spraying is the plant "doomed"?

I think I read somewhere where it takes about 4 days for the glyphosate to reach the roots. I've disced and planted at 1 week after spraying with no problems--even though the plants didn't look dead yet I didn't have any regrowth. It does take about 2 weeks before you see a total die off but even though the plants are still green a week later--they're dead!

Like Todd says, have planted a week after spraying here but only in the garden instead of in a plot. A week might not be enough time after spraying before planting depending on what you are planting, would read the label on your glyphosate if it has one. While the weeds did die, my seeds(cowpeas and lima beans) never came up and my tomato plants died.

Ranger, I believe it is dead in 7-10 days but don't hold me to it. We have noticed that the ground does work up much better when the grass is brown instead of green.

The longer you can wait, the better if you want total die off. Roundup keeps working below the soil level even when the stuff above ground is dead.

I think the package labeling says 2 weeks for total die off.

One week seems to be the norm for letting the die off to occur. The longer you let it sit the deader it looks, up to a certain point. Glyphosate is going to kill only the weed or grasses exposed at the time of spraying. Although the plants don't look dead they really are. They just don't know it yet. Seed in the ground won't be affected because the glyphosate has to actually touch the leaf to travel to the root system.
Most glyphosate products say one week between spraying and replanting.
This is why glyphosate is called a post emergence herbicide.
